Chapter 2 I Am His Second Choice

Author: Watching Wynn
Calvin opened his mouth, but couldn't say a word.

I pushed him away and went back to the bedroom.

My medication usually put me to sleep quickly. That night, however, I tossed and turned until dawn.

I found myself thinking about the year I first became a full-time housewife.

Back then, a drawing I had drawn on a whim won an award. It was only a trivial award, but Elizabeth published a post accusing me of plagiarism.

That was when the endless online harassment began.

After all, between a famous artist and a housewife, everyone thought it was obvious who must have copied whom.

It was the first time I had ever faced so much hatred from so many strangers.

But even then, I didn't break. It wasn't until I saw the news that Elizabeth had returned to the country and that Calvin had personally gone to welcome her back that I finally did.

Suddenly, everyone was talking about how they had grown up together. People even began speculating that Calvin's mysterious wife—the woman he had secretly married—must be Elizabeth.

When reporters asked Calvin about his thoughts on the plagiarism scandal, he merely said, "I believe Elizabeth."

That was the first time I truly understood what heartbreak felt like. His answer shattered almost everything I had been holding on to.

At that time, I confronted Calvin.

After all, he knew I hadn't plagiarized anything, so I didn't understand why he would say something like that.

However, his answer was simple. He said that I was just a full-time housewife, so how could someone like me possibly know how to draw?

After that day, I became quiet. I stopped taking care of myself, and eventually, even getting out of bed felt impossible.

Calvin didn't realize anything was wrong until he noticed that his shirts hadn't been washed in three days.

The day I was diagnosed with severe depression was the first time I ever saw Calvin cry.

"I'm sorry, Melissa," he said through his tears. "I really didn't know my words would affect you this badly…"

As I looked at the tears in his eyes, I relented.

Since it was the first time he had ever cried in front of me, I forgave him. But somehow, I was never able to forgive myself.

Gradually, the sky outside began to brighten. Then, I heard the sound of cooking coming from the kitchen.

I dragged myself out of bed and opened the door. Calvin was making breakfast for two.

It was the first time I had ever seen him cook, and despite everything, hope flared uncontrollably inside me.

I sat down at the dining table and waited, but the food never came. Eventually, I looked toward the kitchen and decided to bring the breakfast over myself.

Before I could touch it, Calvin stopped me.

"Don't. I'm taking both of these to the office."

Hearing his words, I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and said, "Both of them? Neither one is for me?"

Calvin ruffled my hair gently and said, "You're staying home all day anyway. Make yourself something, okay?"

I could only stand there and watch as he packed both breakfasts into the lunch boxes labelled "For Elizabeth Only."

Suddenly, I barely had the strength left to stand.

  • His Likes Were Never Love   Chapter 9 A Fresh Start

The online harassment that had followed me for nearly a year suddenly disappeared the moment I began preparing my lawsuit. It was almost as though it had never existed.I knew for certain that Elizabeth was behind all of this. With Calvin in prison, she had lost the man who had always stood behind her, and their reputations were both in ruins. She had once talked about starting her own company, but she couldn't even afford a decent lawyer now.My defamation case over the plagiarism accusation was almost embarrassingly easy to win.Elizabeth was ordered to pay me a substantial amount in damages, and it nearly wiped out everything she had saved over the course of her life.Later, I heard that she married a wealthy man who was nearly sixty. Apparently, she was perfectly happy with the arrangement.…By then, Elizabeth had become nothing more than a distant story from another lifetime. In the meantime, I had enough assets of my own to live comfortably for the rest of my life.I est

I didn't spare Calvin another glance as I went inside and closed the door behind me. Only then did I finally allow myself to break down and cry.Sometimes, I would dream about Nini. She would give me a little meow and stiffly climb onto me as she settled against my chest like always. But every time I lifted my hand to touch her, she would walk away. Not once had I managed to pet Nini in my dreams. Those dreams tormented me, yet every night, I still hoped to dream of her.I took a hot shower and climbed into bed."Come visit me soon, Nini."When I woke the next morning, there was a message from my lawyer, saying that the hearing had been moved forward and was scheduled for that afternoon.…By the time I arrived at the courthouse, Calvin was already sitting across from me.Calvin and Elizabeth had been so public about their supposed marriage that I had more than enough evidence to establish the relationship they had presented to the world. When questioned by the judge, he admi

Calvin stared at the kitten in the box. Whatever he wanted to say seemed lodged in his throat.I reached out and gently touched the kitten, and it immediately rubbed its head against my hand."Nini would never do that. Even when she wanted affection, she'd only awkwardly walk over and give me a little meow. She would never rub against me like this. Calvin, you shouldn't have brought her here. Every time I look at her, all I can think about is how my innocent Nini died."His eyes turned bloodshot. "Melissa, can you please give me one more chance? I didn't know Nini meant that much to you. I thought she was just an ordinary cat—""So, that gave you the right to kill her?" I shrieked."Because I was nothing more than a full-time housewife, you thought you had the right to decide what happened to my cat! Because in your eyes, I belonged to you! Elizabeth was allergic to cat hair, so you killed Nini on her behalf. Calvin, how dare you show up in front of me and tear open that wound aga

I wasn't surprised when Calvin added me from his private account. After all, I was preparing to take him to court for our divorce. I knew he would have to contact me sooner or later. When he wanted to meet me, I also received an invitation from Elizabeth at almost the exact same time.I did not doubt that Elizabeth had been behind the scandal all those years ago. After stealing the spotlight at the banquet, she was probably feeling more triumphant than ever. Hence, I was willing to bet she had invited me there just to gloat. That was why I arranged for both of them to show up at the same place. All I had to do was see whether my gamble would pay off.Perhaps walking away from a doomed relationship really did change my luck. Otherwise, things couldn't have gone this smoothly.Under Calvin's ice-cold gaze, I picked up the drawing lying on the table and said, "Elizabeth, I just recorded everything you said. I'll be suing you for defamation. Now, I'm taking this with me."As I walked

  • His Likes Were Never Love   Chapter 5 A Meeting With Elizabeth

Calvin stared at his personal image management team in disbelief."My wife is divorcing me. Why the hell didn't any of you tell me?"His secretary felt wronged as she explained, "After you told us to continue liking her posts as usual, we did call you to confirm, but…""But what?" Calvin had already run out of patience."It was Ms. Winster who answered the phone. She told us to keep liking Mrs. Kenneth's posts as usual and not to disturb you. She also said that Mrs. Kenneth would be divorcing you soon anyway, and that she would be your wife. She told us not to contact you no matter what happened to Mrs. Kenneth."A surge of fury shot straight to Calvin's head."I never said I was going to marry Elizabeth. Are you sure those were her exact words?""Yes," the secretary replied hurriedly. "I would never mistake Elizabeth's voice."Calvin ended the call angrily. He was already heading for the door when he suddenly stopped. He felt that something wasn't right. After all, Elizab
