Chapter 3

مؤلف: PP
By the time I reached the top floor of the club on the North Shore, only one room was still lit.

When I pushed the door open, Damian was standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, while representatives from the other eight Families sat along both sides of the long table.

Sicily recognized Nine Families, and nearly all of their representatives were gathered in that room. There was also one Family that stood outside the ranking altogether, though everyone acknowledged it as the most powerful of them all.

I glanced around and felt slightly relieved when I saw that no one from that Family was there.

A young man named Rafe occupied the seat at the head of the table. He had once been Damian's closest friend and had also served as a consigliere to the Marchetti Family, but the entire situation unfolding around us had been orchestrated by him.

The moment Damian saw me, his expression darkened.

“Who told you to come here?”

“I missed you, so I came to see you,” I replied.

“You need to go back.”

“I'm not going back.”

I found an empty seat and sat down. Damian watched me for several seconds before giving in with a helpless look, then took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.

“If you're staying, then stay beside me and don't say anything reckless.”

Rafe lifted a hand to interrupt him.

“I was beginning to wonder whether we came here to negotiate or to watch the two of you romance each other.”

His tone hardened as he continued.

“Perhaps we should get back to the reason we're all here.”

He pushed a document across the table.

“The terms are actually very simple. Surrender all of the Marchetti Family's territory and accept responsibility for what happened three years ago. In return, I can guarantee that your father will be allowed to step down peacefully and that both of your brothers will come home alive.”

Damian turned through several pages of the agreement, and his expression grew colder with each one.

“You're asking for more than our territory.”

If he signed it, the agreement would not stop with the land itself. The Marchetti docks, casinos, port holdings, and every other leased territory tied to the Family would be pulled into the deal as well, leaving the Marchettis with almost nothing.

“Do you really have another choice?” Rafe asked. “By tomorrow morning, every port controlled by the eight Families will have received new orders. At that point, having your shipments held at the docks will be the least of your problems.”

He leaned back slightly before adding, “As for whether your two brothers walk out of this alive, that depends entirely on what you decide.”

The veins along the back of Damian's hand stood out as he tightened his grip.

Rafe's attention shifted toward me.

“So this is the little bird you've been keeping for the past three years.”

He looked me over without bothering to hide his interest.

“She really is as beautiful as everyone says.”

Then he turned back to Damian.

“She's your personal property, after all. Don't worry. Once this is over, the rest of us will make sure she's looked after well enough.”

The other men at the table turned toward me almost at once. Some lowered their voices to whisper among themselves, while others laughed openly.

“She is beautiful. I'd pay a billion for a woman who looked like that.”

“I heard Damian picked her up from somewhere. She isn't even from one of our Families.”

Damian's voice turned hard.

“She is not a toy, and none of you have the right to speak about her that way.”

Rafe laughed softly.

“Vera, Damian won't be able to afford you for much longer. If you stay with him, you won't even be able to keep the earrings you're wearing tonight.”

His smile widened as he continued.

“If you know how to behave, I can keep you instead. Would ten million a month be enough?”

Laughter broke out around the table.

Damian shot to his feet and seized Rafe by the collar, and almost immediately, four men around them drew their guns and aimed them at him.

By the time we returned to the Marchetti estate, the courtyard had regained much of its former liveliness. The household staff who had been dismissed had all come back, people were moving in and out of the house again, and Damian's parents had spent the entire day waiting for us.The moment they saw the four of us return safely, they hurried over.Damian's mother immediately pulled her two missing sons into her arms and held on to them for a long time before finally letting go.The butler brought me a chair, and I sat down with a yawn.I had barely slept over the past few days, and so much had happened in such a short time that I felt as though I had aged six months overnight. The Don came over and gave me a smile.“Vera, thank you for saving this Family.”Over the past three years, he had always treated me politely, but there had often been a trace of condescension in his voice whenever he spoke about me. Now, however, the way he looked at me had clearly changed.“From now on, you sho

“I can let you take them back,” Rafe said with a smile, “but I want something from you in return.”“What do you want?” I asked. His expression remained unchanged. “I want a promise from the Caruso Family, and I want one more thing as well. What happened with those reference numbers ends here, and no one says a word about it outside this room.”I looked at him for a moment. “Who exactly is standing behind you? Even now, you're still bargaining on his behalf.”A faint smile touched my lips. “You're a remarkably loyal dog.”“You don't need to know anything about that.” Rafe took out his phone. “All you need to understand is that the two Marchetti brothers are still in my hands.”He made a call, but no one answered. When he tried again, the room had grown so quiet that everyone could hear the call being rejected from the other end.The third attempt finally went through, and although Rafe did not put the phone on speaker, the voice on the other end was loud enough for the entire room to he

Rafe gave a cold laugh. “No matter how powerful the Caruso Family is, you still can't move against all eight of us without cause.”I turned the agreement to its final page.“Would you like me to start listing everything your Families have owed mine over the years?”Every Family in that room owed the Carusos money, and none of those debts were insignificant. Some were large enough that collecting them in full could threaten the very foundations of the Families involved.I let my gaze pass over the table. “Does anyone else still want to talk to me about rules?”No one answered.Enzo bent so deeply at the waist that he was almost folded in half. “We accept all of your terms, and we'll do everything we can to help locate the two Marchetti brothers.”The others immediately began distancing themselves from Rafe.“This was Rafe's doing. We had nothing to do with it.”“Everything came through him. We didn't know what he was really planning.”“We'll release every shipment today, and from now on

The white-haired man kept his head lowered, and because everyone in the room knew that he held the highest standing among those who had just arrived, no one dared to make a move.A middle-aged man who had come in with him was the first to recover from the shock. “Sir, are you sure you haven't mistaken her for someone else? She's nothing more than the pretty woman Damian keeps at home.”The old man turned, gave him a single look, and kicked him so hard that he stumbled backward and dropped to his knees.Without sparing him another glance, the old man walked over to me and bent respectfully at the waist. “This is my failure. I should have kept my people under better control.”The heads of the other seven Families were clearly confused by what they were seeing, but they remained together in silence rather than questioning him.The men who had been acting so arrogantly only moments ago began quietly backing away. A few of them pulled out their phones and started deleting records before any

After I ended the call, the room remained silent for several seconds.Rafe was the first to laugh. “You want every ship in the ports stopped? Do you have any idea how many vessels move in and out along Sicily's coastline every single day?”The others from the eight Families joined in, and a blond man looked me over with open amusement. “Damian really does spare no expense when it comes to women. He even managed to spoil one enough to make demands like this. You seriously expect the heads of the other Families to come here within half an hour?”I picked up the agreement lying on the table.Rafe glanced toward the men behind him. “Take her phone.”One of the bodyguards had barely reached toward me when Damian caught his wrist and threw him aside, which immediately brought several guns back up in Damian's direction.“As long as I'm still alive, no one is going to lay a hand on either of you.” His gaze moved between Sofia and me as he spoke.Hearing that only made me even more reluctant to

“Don't get so worked up. If something happens to you, there won't be anyone left in your Family with the authority to sign anything.”Damian took a deep breath and released his grip.Rafe tossed a pen onto the table in front of him. “You're going to sign this agreement one way or another. As for her, she's nothing more than a pet, so I don't see why it matters if I have a little fun with her.”“I'll knock ten million off your debt if you let me fuck her once. How does that sound?”“Not a chance.” Damian immediately pulled me behind him.Rafe gave him an amused look. “I suppose I shouldn't leave you out either. Stand behind me and give me a push, and I'll knock another ten million off your debt. Happy now?”After glancing at his watch, Rafe tapped the agreement in front of Damian. “You'd better sign soon, because if you keep stalling, there won't be a cent left in any of your overseas accounts.”Damian squeezed my hand and lowered his voice so that only I could hear him. “Whatever happe
