Chapter 2

Autor: Year on Year
"We need to talk." Calvin's voice came from the other side of the door.

I didn't move.

"Open the door," he said.

I didn't answer. A moment later, the doorknob turned, and he walked in.

He stopped beside the bed and looked down at me.

"Don't you think you're overreacting?"

I sat up and leaned against the headboard.

"Overreacting?"

"You're asking for a divorce over some breakfast? Don't you think this is ridiculous?" Calvin let out a dry laugh.

I stared at him. We had been together for five years, but suddenly he felt like a total stranger.

"You think this is ridiculous?"

"Isn't it? It was just breakfast. It's not like I cheated on you," Calvin replied, looking totally unapologetic.

"Then what counts as cheating to you?" I asked. "Sleeping together?"

His brow furrowed. "What are you talking about? She's just a coworker."

"A coworker who ate your homemade breakfast for three years?" I sneered.

"She has a sensitive stomach. Food from outside doesn't agree with her. Since I was already making breakfast, I just made some for her too."

"Just?" I couldn't help laughing and said, "You get up an hour early every morning! You even make her fruit plates. You remember exactly what she likes and doesn't like!"

He fell silent.

"You've been doing this for her for three years, yet you've never made me breakfast even once."

"There wasn't enough time," he argued.

"Not enough time? You were already getting up an hour early. You could've made one more portion for me. So why didn't you?"

Calvin opened his mouth, but no words came out.

"Because you didn't think I was worth the effort," I said. "You couldn't even remember what I like, let alone take the time to make me breakfast, cut up some fruit, or do any of those little things."

"If that's how you want to see it, there's nothing I can do." He shrugged.

"See? You don't even bother to explain yourself."

Calvin took a deep breath and softened his tone. "Fine. I'll admit I shouldn't have made her breakfast. But I never did anything with her. You went out to lunch with another guy today. Those are two completely different things."

I asked, "How are they different?"

"She's just a coworker. And that guy? Everyone at your company knows he's been pursuing you for two years. Yet, you still went to have lunch with him. Were you doing that to get back at me?"

"Get back at you?" I tilted my head. "We just had lunch. There's nothing going on between us. You're reading too much into it."

His expression changed. He'd used that exact excuse before. "You…"

"What?"

"You're obviously doing this on purpose just to piss me off!"

"Am I?" I held his gaze. "Oh, so you can't stand it when I go have lunch with someone else, but it's perfectly fine for you to make breakfast for another woman?"

"I told you, she's just a coworker!" Calvin yelled, his face turning red.

"And I told you, he's just a coworker too. The restaurant he took me to was really good, so we're planning to go back next time."

Ava froze."It's my husband's pension money," Lucy said. "It's not much, just 30 thousand dollars."Ava shook her head and shrank back. "I can't take it."Lucy's wrinkled hand remained outstretched, steady and firm."That's a Meyer baby you're carrying," she said. "Whether you keep it or not is up to you. But this money is yours, no matter what."Tears streamed down Ava's face again, her body shaking like a leaf. This time, she didn't refuse. She took the envelope with shaking hands.Lucy gently patted the back of her hand. "Take care."Ava stood in the middle of the room, looking pale and completely drained as she clutched the envelope. She turned and looked at Calvin. He was still slumped on the couch with his eyes closed."Calvin," Ava said softly. He didn't move."Calvin, look at me."He finally opened his eyes. They were empty, as if there was nothing behind them."Everything you told me was a lie, wasn't it?" asked Ava.He said nothing."You never planned to get a

Ava trembled in Martha's grip, crying even harder. When she finally spoke, her voice came out as a strained whisper. "He told me he would get a divorce."The room fell silent again.Martha slowly let go of Ava's hands and stumbled back onto the couch. Roger slammed his fist onto the coffee table. The teacups rattled, and tea splashed across the table.Lucy sat there in silence, her deeply lined face unreadable. Then she finally spoke. "Whatever happened between you two, that's your business. I can't change it, and I won't interfere."She paused and looked at Calvin. "But there's a baby involved now. Are you going to take responsibility or not?"Her voice was quiet, but everyone in the room heard her clearly.Calvin opened his mouth, then closed it again. A muffled sound caught in his throat.Lucy didn't wait for an answer. She turned to Ava instead. "Miss, who do you have back home?"Ava blinked, tears still clinging to her cheeks. She looked like a child who had been caught do

Ava stood behind me, trembling slightly. She opened her mouth several times, but no words came out."I'm asking you! What are you doing here?" Calvin demanded, his voice getting louder. Martha tugged at his sleeve. "Keep your voice down."He shook her off and stared at Ava in utter disbelief.Ava finally managed to speak, her voice soft and shaky. "I called you, but your phone was off. You didn't reply to my messages either. I went to the office, but they told me you'd quit. I didn't know where you went. I didn't even know where your hometown was. I couldn't find you.""So you went to her?" He gestured toward me with his chin. "Why did you go looking for her?""I… She... she came back for me," Ava stuttered. "She told me she'd found you, so I came with her.""You came with her?" His face hardened. "Why would you do that? What right do you even have to be here?" Roger finally spoke, his voice low and heavy. "That's enough."Calvin frowned. "Dad, you don't understand. This wom

My hands tightened around the steering wheel."When he first asked me out, he told me he was single," Ava said quietly. "On our first dinner date, he told me he'd dated a few people before, but none of those relationships had worked out. He said he lived alone and didn't really have anyone to hang out with on weekends."I said nothing. She continued, "About a month later, a coworker warned me that Calvin might be married. She said she'd seen him with his wife at a company event. So I confronted him, and that's when he finally admitted it."Her voice trembled. "He told me your marriage was dead. You two didn't love each other anymore and were only staying together because of your kid and the house. He asked me to give him time. He promised he'd marry me once he got everything sorted out."I frowned. Our child? Where had that come from? We'd been married for five years and didn't have any kids. It wasn't that we didn't want them. I just couldn't get pregnant. I went to the doctor f

"Please," Ava pleaded. "I really don't know where to find him." Her voice trembled, and she was visibly shaking.I looked down at her. She really did look awful. Her lips were dry and cracked, and dark circles ringed her eyes. She didn't look like she was putting on an act. She was genuinely scared, desperate, and completely lost. But there was nothing I could do for her."He ran off, and I'm looking for him too," I said. "So I can't help you find him. He walked away from his own home, as you can see.""But I'm pregnant…""That's not my problem." I left without looking back. The afternoon sun was almost blinding. I stood on the sidewalk for a moment, narrowing my eyes until they adjusted to the light. My phone suddenly buzzed. It was a message from Ms. Vance."Got the Social Security number. I'll start looking for him. See you at the office at 3:00 pm."I met with Ms. Vance at her office that afternoon. She was a woman in her 40s with short hair and glasses. She spoke in a cal

Ava Shaw. For three years, I had no idea what her name was. I didn't expect her to have the nerve to contact me. I stared at her message for a moment, my fingers hovering over the screen, wondering what she wanted to talk about. Was she going to apologize? Explain herself? Or beg for forgiveness? After a moment of hesitation, I replied, "Where?"She sent me the location of a cafe in a mall on the south side of town. I drove there and found her sitting at a table in the back, her against the wall. She looked nothing like the woman I'd imagined. There was nothing glamorous or seductive about her. She was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans with her hair pulled back in a simple ponytail and no makeup. Her lips were pale, and dark circles showed under her eyes. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were large and striking as she watched me walk over."What did you want to talk about?" I sat across from her and got straight to the point.Ava kept her head down, fidgeting with her hands
