Chapter 3

Autor: Year on Year
Calvin slammed his hand down on the nightstand. "Enough!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't even blink.

"What are you so angry about?" My temper sparked. "You can make breakfast for a female coworker for three years, but I can't have lunch with a male coworker? So you get to set all the rules? Everything you do is fine, but everything I do is wrong?"

"Because I never did anything to betray you!" he snapped.

"And neither did I," I shot back. "When have I ever cheated on you?"

He was silent.

I threw off the blanket, slipped on my slippers, and headed for the door.

"Where are you going?" he called after me.

"Why do you care?" I replied flatly without looking back.

Calvin said nothing, but I heard his footsteps right behind me as I walked out of the bedroom.

"Where are you going this late? Don't go out!"

I stopped at the front door, changed into my shoes, and picked up my car keys.

"Why are you going out now? Just calm down."

"I am calm," I said, opening the front door. "Calmer than I've ever been."

Then I walked out and shut the door behind me.

In the elevator, I looked at myself in the mirror. My eyes were a bit red.

When I stumbled upon that message last week, I spent the entire afternoon sitting on the couch, crying until my eyes were swollen.

The moment Calvin came home from work, I handed him the phone.

I expected him to explain who the woman was and why she'd been texting him. Instead, the first thing he said was, "You went through my phone?"

He didn't care about my feelings. What bothered him was that I'd looked through his phone.

At that moment, I knew our marriage was over.

I drove around until I found a hotel and checked in. The room was small but clean. I lay in bed, staring at the warm yellow glow of the ceiling light.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated with a text from Calvin. "Where are you?"

I didn't reply.

Another message came through. "Come home. Let's talk this out."

I ignored that one, too.

Ten minutes later, the third message came. "Do you really have to make such a big deal out of this? It was just breakfast."

I flipped my phone face down on the nightstand and went to sleep.

The next morning, I got ready and went straight to work.

By the time I left the hotel, the sun was already up. I squinted in the bright morning light and realized I'd slept more peacefully than I had in years.

I was all by myself, but I didn't have that constant feeling of unease weighing on me anymore.

When I got out of my car and walked to my office building, I stopped in my tracks.

Calvin was standing right outside, holding an insulated bag.

The moment he saw me, he hurried over and held it out to me. He said softly, "I made you breakfast—fried eggs, bacon, and that avocado sandwich you like. I'm sorry. Forgive me, okay?"

Ava froze."It's my husband's pension money," Lucy said. "It's not much, just 30 thousand dollars."Ava shook her head and shrank back. "I can't take it."Lucy's wrinkled hand remained outstretched, steady and firm."That's a Meyer baby you're carrying," she said. "Whether you keep it or not is up to you. But this money is yours, no matter what."Tears streamed down Ava's face again, her body shaking like a leaf. This time, she didn't refuse. She took the envelope with shaking hands.Lucy gently patted the back of her hand. "Take care."Ava stood in the middle of the room, looking pale and completely drained as she clutched the envelope. She turned and looked at Calvin. He was still slumped on the couch with his eyes closed."Calvin," Ava said softly. He didn't move."Calvin, look at me."He finally opened his eyes. They were empty, as if there was nothing behind them."Everything you told me was a lie, wasn't it?" asked Ava.He said nothing."You never planned to get a

Ava trembled in Martha's grip, crying even harder. When she finally spoke, her voice came out as a strained whisper. "He told me he would get a divorce."The room fell silent again.Martha slowly let go of Ava's hands and stumbled back onto the couch. Roger slammed his fist onto the coffee table. The teacups rattled, and tea splashed across the table.Lucy sat there in silence, her deeply lined face unreadable. Then she finally spoke. "Whatever happened between you two, that's your business. I can't change it, and I won't interfere."She paused and looked at Calvin. "But there's a baby involved now. Are you going to take responsibility or not?"Her voice was quiet, but everyone in the room heard her clearly.Calvin opened his mouth, then closed it again. A muffled sound caught in his throat.Lucy didn't wait for an answer. She turned to Ava instead. "Miss, who do you have back home?"Ava blinked, tears still clinging to her cheeks. She looked like a child who had been caught do

Ava stood behind me, trembling slightly. She opened her mouth several times, but no words came out."I'm asking you! What are you doing here?" Calvin demanded, his voice getting louder. Martha tugged at his sleeve. "Keep your voice down."He shook her off and stared at Ava in utter disbelief.Ava finally managed to speak, her voice soft and shaky. "I called you, but your phone was off. You didn't reply to my messages either. I went to the office, but they told me you'd quit. I didn't know where you went. I didn't even know where your hometown was. I couldn't find you.""So you went to her?" He gestured toward me with his chin. "Why did you go looking for her?""I… She... she came back for me," Ava stuttered. "She told me she'd found you, so I came with her.""You came with her?" His face hardened. "Why would you do that? What right do you even have to be here?" Roger finally spoke, his voice low and heavy. "That's enough."Calvin frowned. "Dad, you don't understand. This wom

My hands tightened around the steering wheel."When he first asked me out, he told me he was single," Ava said quietly. "On our first dinner date, he told me he'd dated a few people before, but none of those relationships had worked out. He said he lived alone and didn't really have anyone to hang out with on weekends."I said nothing. She continued, "About a month later, a coworker warned me that Calvin might be married. She said she'd seen him with his wife at a company event. So I confronted him, and that's when he finally admitted it."Her voice trembled. "He told me your marriage was dead. You two didn't love each other anymore and were only staying together because of your kid and the house. He asked me to give him time. He promised he'd marry me once he got everything sorted out."I frowned. Our child? Where had that come from? We'd been married for five years and didn't have any kids. It wasn't that we didn't want them. I just couldn't get pregnant. I went to the doctor f

"Please," Ava pleaded. "I really don't know where to find him." Her voice trembled, and she was visibly shaking.I looked down at her. She really did look awful. Her lips were dry and cracked, and dark circles ringed her eyes. She didn't look like she was putting on an act. She was genuinely scared, desperate, and completely lost. But there was nothing I could do for her."He ran off, and I'm looking for him too," I said. "So I can't help you find him. He walked away from his own home, as you can see.""But I'm pregnant…""That's not my problem." I left without looking back. The afternoon sun was almost blinding. I stood on the sidewalk for a moment, narrowing my eyes until they adjusted to the light. My phone suddenly buzzed. It was a message from Ms. Vance."Got the Social Security number. I'll start looking for him. See you at the office at 3:00 pm."I met with Ms. Vance at her office that afternoon. She was a woman in her 40s with short hair and glasses. She spoke in a cal

Ava Shaw. For three years, I had no idea what her name was. I didn't expect her to have the nerve to contact me. I stared at her message for a moment, my fingers hovering over the screen, wondering what she wanted to talk about. Was she going to apologize? Explain herself? Or beg for forgiveness? After a moment of hesitation, I replied, "Where?"She sent me the location of a cafe in a mall on the south side of town. I drove there and found her sitting at a table in the back, her against the wall. She looked nothing like the woman I'd imagined. There was nothing glamorous or seductive about her. She was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans with her hair pulled back in a simple ponytail and no makeup. Her lips were pale, and dark circles showed under her eyes. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were large and striking as she watched me walk over."What did you want to talk about?" I sat across from her and got straight to the point.Ava kept her head down, fidgeting with her hands
