Chapter 1

"What's the meaning of this, Jolene Aniston?" my husband, Calvin Meyer, asked in anger.

I ignored him and kept walking.

He caught up and grabbed my arm, his voice rising. "I said, what's the meaning of this?"

People were coming and going through the office lobby, and a few of my coworkers turned to stare.

I yanked my arm free and said calmly, "It was just lunch. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?"

His face went pale. Lips trembling, he finally choked out, "Get in the car. We're going home."

"Why should I?"

"Because you're my wife!"

"Oh, so now you remember I'm your wife?" I looked at him, memories from the last three years flashing through my mind.

Every morning, Calvin got up at six. After washing up, he went into the kitchen to prepare breakfast. The sandwiches, fried eggs, and fruit plates he made looked so nice, it was as though they belonged in a food magazine.

I always thought he was packing them to eat at the office. As for me, I'd just grab a cold sandwich on my way to work. Sometimes, I even felt bad that he was getting up so early and told him to get more sleep.

He always said he didn't mind, and it was just his routine.

It turned out that his routine was making breakfast for another woman.

"What were you doing with that guy at lunch today?" Calvin hissed, eyes burning with anger.

"You saw us, didn't you? What exactly do you want me to say?"

After speaking, I turned and walked away. He yelled my name, but I didn't look back.

I stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for my floor. Just before the doors closed, I saw him standing there, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

I leaned against the elevator wall, my heart pounding. But I didn't regret it for a second.

When I got back to my desk, I turned on my computer, my hands still trembling slightly.

Derek Sandall leaned over from across the aisle. "Jolene, was that your husband downstairs? Is everything alright?"

"Yeah, everything is fine."

Derek took the hint and didn't ask any more questions.

I spent the rest of the afternoon staring blankly at my screen. My mind kept going back to that text message.

I remembered when Calvin had a cold last week. I offered to make him soup, but he declined, saying he'd just grab something simple. I thought he was being sweet and considerate. Now I realize he just didn't want my care.

When it was time to leave work for the day, I packed my things and headed out.

My phone buzzed with a text from him. "We need to talk tonight."

I ignored it and shoved my phone into my bag.

When I got home, the living room was dark. I took off my shoes and noticed the guest room door was closed, with a sliver of light showing underneath.

Calvin had moved into the guest room. Great, it saved me the trouble of kicking him out.

I tossed my bag on the couch and walked into the kitchen for a glass of water. As I passed his room, I stopped for a moment.

In the past, whenever we fought, he would sleep in the guest room, and I would always be the one to knock on his door to smooth things over.

Once, we had a particularly bad fight, and he slept in there for a whole week. I cooked every day and called him to eat. He would eat, then go straight back to the guest room and close the door.

In the end, I was the one who had to apologize first. Only then would he move back to our bedroom.

And what were we even fighting about back then? Me being too friendly with a client.

How ironic. He demanded that I keep my distance from other men while he spent three years making breakfast for his female coworker.

Shaking my head, I made my way to my room to relax.

Suddenly, there was a knock on my door.

Ava froze."It's my husband's pension money," Lucy said. "It's not much, just 30 thousand dollars."Ava shook her head and shrank back. "I can't take it."Lucy's wrinkled hand remained outstretched, steady and firm."That's a Meyer baby you're carrying," she said. "Whether you keep it or not is up to you. But this money is yours, no matter what."Tears streamed down Ava's face again, her body shaking like a leaf. This time, she didn't refuse. She took the envelope with shaking hands.Lucy gently patted the back of her hand. "Take care."Ava stood in the middle of the room, looking pale and completely drained as she clutched the envelope. She turned and looked at Calvin. He was still slumped on the couch with his eyes closed."Calvin," Ava said softly. He didn't move."Calvin, look at me."He finally opened his eyes. They were empty, as if there was nothing behind them."Everything you told me was a lie, wasn't it?" asked Ava.He said nothing."You never planned to get a

Ava trembled in Martha's grip, crying even harder. When she finally spoke, her voice came out as a strained whisper. "He told me he would get a divorce."The room fell silent again.Martha slowly let go of Ava's hands and stumbled back onto the couch. Roger slammed his fist onto the coffee table. The teacups rattled, and tea splashed across the table.Lucy sat there in silence, her deeply lined face unreadable. Then she finally spoke. "Whatever happened between you two, that's your business. I can't change it, and I won't interfere."She paused and looked at Calvin. "But there's a baby involved now. Are you going to take responsibility or not?"Her voice was quiet, but everyone in the room heard her clearly.Calvin opened his mouth, then closed it again. A muffled sound caught in his throat.Lucy didn't wait for an answer. She turned to Ava instead. "Miss, who do you have back home?"Ava blinked, tears still clinging to her cheeks. She looked like a child who had been caught do

Ava stood behind me, trembling slightly. She opened her mouth several times, but no words came out."I'm asking you! What are you doing here?" Calvin demanded, his voice getting louder. Martha tugged at his sleeve. "Keep your voice down."He shook her off and stared at Ava in utter disbelief.Ava finally managed to speak, her voice soft and shaky. "I called you, but your phone was off. You didn't reply to my messages either. I went to the office, but they told me you'd quit. I didn't know where you went. I didn't even know where your hometown was. I couldn't find you.""So you went to her?" He gestured toward me with his chin. "Why did you go looking for her?""I… She... she came back for me," Ava stuttered. "She told me she'd found you, so I came with her.""You came with her?" His face hardened. "Why would you do that? What right do you even have to be here?" Roger finally spoke, his voice low and heavy. "That's enough."Calvin frowned. "Dad, you don't understand. This wom

My hands tightened around the steering wheel."When he first asked me out, he told me he was single," Ava said quietly. "On our first dinner date, he told me he'd dated a few people before, but none of those relationships had worked out. He said he lived alone and didn't really have anyone to hang out with on weekends."I said nothing. She continued, "About a month later, a coworker warned me that Calvin might be married. She said she'd seen him with his wife at a company event. So I confronted him, and that's when he finally admitted it."Her voice trembled. "He told me your marriage was dead. You two didn't love each other anymore and were only staying together because of your kid and the house. He asked me to give him time. He promised he'd marry me once he got everything sorted out."I frowned. Our child? Where had that come from? We'd been married for five years and didn't have any kids. It wasn't that we didn't want them. I just couldn't get pregnant. I went to the doctor f

"Please," Ava pleaded. "I really don't know where to find him." Her voice trembled, and she was visibly shaking.I looked down at her. She really did look awful. Her lips were dry and cracked, and dark circles ringed her eyes. She didn't look like she was putting on an act. She was genuinely scared, desperate, and completely lost. But there was nothing I could do for her."He ran off, and I'm looking for him too," I said. "So I can't help you find him. He walked away from his own home, as you can see.""But I'm pregnant…""That's not my problem." I left without looking back. The afternoon sun was almost blinding. I stood on the sidewalk for a moment, narrowing my eyes until they adjusted to the light. My phone suddenly buzzed. It was a message from Ms. Vance."Got the Social Security number. I'll start looking for him. See you at the office at 3:00 pm."I met with Ms. Vance at her office that afternoon. She was a woman in her 40s with short hair and glasses. She spoke in a cal

Ava Shaw. For three years, I had no idea what her name was. I didn't expect her to have the nerve to contact me. I stared at her message for a moment, my fingers hovering over the screen, wondering what she wanted to talk about. Was she going to apologize? Explain herself? Or beg for forgiveness? After a moment of hesitation, I replied, "Where?"She sent me the location of a cafe in a mall on the south side of town. I drove there and found her sitting at a table in the back, her against the wall. She looked nothing like the woman I'd imagined. There was nothing glamorous or seductive about her. She was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans with her hair pulled back in a simple ponytail and no makeup. Her lips were pale, and dark circles showed under her eyes. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were large and striking as she watched me walk over."What did you want to talk about?" I sat across from her and got straight to the point.Ava kept her head down, fidgeting with her hands
