Chapter 12

Author: Hope
Anise found a part-time job at the town library. Her work included sorting old books and helping borrowers with registration.

It was a quaint job. Nobody knew anything about her, nobody would suddenly slap her or force her to kneel unprompted.

Although life was somewhat dull, she was fond of how peaceful it was.

She thought she could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Soon, things changed. It happened one evening when she was on her way home after work, which took her through the town square.

  • His Mad Delusions   Chapter 22

Anise stood before the mirror while morning light filtered through the sheer curtains, casting dappled flecks of light like gold onto her pristine wedding dress. The makeup artist was just helping her put on a pair of pearl earrings when Liam entered with a cup of hot honey.“Nervous?” he asked with a smile while handing her the cup. There was a faint scent of disinfectant from the surgery room lingering on the tips of his fingers.Anise shook her head while casting a glance at a piece of a photograph that had turned yellow, stamped on the dressing table. It was a picture of her at university. She was standing in front of the library and smiling shyly. It was a picture Liam had painstakingly tracked down after scouring through the archives. He had it carefully framed before putting it up over the bed in their bedroom. The butler announced after gently knocking on the door, “Miss Buccaneer, there's an express delivery for you.”Liam frowned as he took the package, “Anonymous send

When Anise shut her suitcase, there was a drizzle outside.Liam was packing the last few of his books in the living room. When he noticed Anise gazing absently at the rain outside, he approached and ruffled her hair, “Think you’ll miss this place?”Anise shook her head faintly before sweeping a look over the modest apartment she had been living in for the past six months.Liam's succulent plants were arranged in a row on the balcony. There was also the floral apron she bought, still hanging in the kitchen. There were two books about medicine and project planning, respectively, set side by side on the table. Her phone suddenly vibrated.[I’m sorry. I have just realized how outrageous my behavior has been. I had always believed you wouldn't leave me, no matter what I did, and that was why I let the people around me push you around and even hurt you. I never properly confronted my feelings. I kept on thinking that even after we separated, you would still apologize to me the way you d

Arthur stood below the sycamore tree near the entrance of a residential district. A half-smoked cigarette dangled between his fingers while ash slowly fell onto his shoes. It was a private investigator who sent him the address.Building 7, Greenville Complex. He found himself looking at a beige-colored building straddled by overgrown wisteria. A gentle early-summer breeze carried the scent of flowers while the distant laughter of children playing chase in the park made up the backdrop. He stubbed out his cigarette and glanced at his watch. It was already six in the evening.Anise usually got home around this time after work. His heart was pounding rapidly. He subconsciously tried to straighten his tie only to realize he had forgotten to wear one.It had been three days since he shaved, and his shirt was wrinkled. If she met him in such a state…Upon reaching this thought, he smiled ironically at himself. As if there was a point in worrying about his appearance. It was not goi

The Reids had been embroiled in countless scandals over the last few days, which went beyond anything simple like tax evasion. They were accused of misappropriating a billion dollars of company funds, which they used for traveling, while countless employees were left without wages. One of their employees, who had been working for them for five years, even ended their life because of it.It looked like it was going to be the end of the line for them. Her father barely had a chance to appeal because he was detained while numerous reporters looked on. The initial sentence handed down to him was lifetime imprisonment. It was going just as poorly for Clarice. She was bound by several heavily equipped doctors and taken to a mental asylum located somewhere in the suburbs. At first, it was hard for her to accept that her status had fallen from that of a respectable socialite to a disgraced criminal who would never get a chance at freedom again.Whenever the officers ordered an assembly, s

The car navigation panel indicated another twenty-minute drive to Clarice’s apartment.Arthur slammed on the gas. The streetlights became distorted into a ribbon of dazzling white. The radio was broadcasting the latest news in the financial sector, “The stock prices of Renault Corporation continue to dive off a cliff. Rumors suggest the CEO’s personal affairs are getting in the way of his work…”Arthur immediately cut off the broadcast.A pink envelope that had begun to turn yellow poked out from the storage compartment. It was a reminder to bring the car in for maintenance, which Anise left behind last year. She would routinely remind Arthur of the precise maintenance dates for each of his cars. She would even jot down notes such as, “The brake pads are degrading, be careful driving.”She would also keep an aroma diffuser in the car, which helped keep the driver awake.A sudden, sharp pain shot through his heart when Arthur thought of Anise. He loosened his collar with one ha

“Mr. Renault, do you need to take a small break?” His assistant could not resist issuing a gentle reminder. The shareholders' meeting today was attended by key figures in the finance industry. They were gathering to discuss upcoming investment strategies for an emerging intelligent robot project. It was a pivotal moment for the company, but Arthur seemed very distracted. He was staring silently at the way the branches swayed outside while specks of sunlight illuminated them at ever-changing angles. The image of the resolute look in Anise's eyes when she fell to the ground replayed in his mind continuously. It was a look he had never seen in her before. What he saw within them was pure, unfiltered hatred. It was an unfamiliar expression. It gave him the impression that she was gradually slipping from his control, which filled him with dread. The Anise he knew had always been submissive and docile. She was the type to trail behind him with her head bowed low. She would hold his han
