 Chapter Three: The Impossible Truth

Three months later, Isabella Carvalho stared at a plastic stick in her small Washington Heights bathroom. Two lines.

She had taken the test three times in two days. She hoped for a different result, but it never happened. She sat on the edge of the tub, cold tiles pressing through her pajamas, and covered her mouth to keep from waking her roommate.

"Pregnant."

This didn’t fit into her life. She had a thesis defense in eight months. Her mother in São Paulo had sacrificed everything to pay for Isabella's two degrees. She was still struggling to pay her tuition, her work visa was fragile, and she had no partner. She didn't even have a name or a phone number for the man responsible.

Still, she thought of him often. She remembered the feel of his hand on her back and the low, surprised rasp of his voice. He had looked at her as if she were something he no longer believed existed.

She didn’t know if he was even alive. He had been bleeding in a hallway when she found him, hunted by someone dangerous. Even if she wanted to find him, she had no way to do it.

The fear and the weight of this unplanned future were hers alone to carry.

"Then I'll carry it," she thought. Suddenly, the fear turned into strength. She remembered her father’s voice: "A good foundation doesn't ask permission to hold weight. It simply does."

She decided on her plan:

 Finish her degree.

Work as many extra shifts as possible.

Figure out the rest, just as the women in her family had done for three generations.

By sunrise, Isabella had stopped shaking. She started planning.

Sixty blocks south, Lorenzo De Luca sat in his penthouse office. He was staring at a folder delivered by his doctor. For the first time in years, he didn't know what to do.

"Say it again," Lorenzo said. His voice was quiet—a tone his men feared more than shouting.

Dr. Whitfield cleared his throat. He explained that the security flags Lorenzo had set on local fertility clinics had triggered a match.

"A woman," the doctor said. "Twenty-four years old. She is eleven weeks pregnant. The timing matches the night of the incident at the Aurelius Club. She was an event coordinator there that night."

Lorenzo didn't move. Outside, the city continued its noisy, indifferent routine.

"That's not possible," Lorenzo said.

"I understand this is—"

"You don't understand," Lorenzo interrupted. "Twenty-four years ago, you told me this would never happen. You said the surgery left permanent damage. You said I would never have children."

The memory brought back a raw, old grief. But beneath that was a cold suspicion.

"Get the original files," Lorenzo ordered. "The surgical report and the fertility panel from twenty-four years ago. I want the physical papers from storage, not the digital copies. Today."

"Lorenzo—"

"Today, Marcus!" Lorenzo used the doctor's first name like a weapon. "If that diagnosis was wrong, someone in my family—or someone close to it—lied to me. I want to know who decided I didn't deserve the truth about my own body."

The doctor left. Lorenzo sat alone, staring at the DNA results: "99.97% match."

A child. “His” child.

He remembered the woman with hazel-green eyes in the supply closet. She had held his wrist and asked for nothing. She had told him that the danger following him wasn't who he was. For three months, he had wondered what her name was.

Now, he knew where to look.

But he also knew the danger. In his world, a secret this big is a target. If his security team found the pregnancy, his enemies might too. To his allies, the child was the future of an empire. To his enemies, the child was the only thing left to destroy.

Lorenzo felt a new kind of fear. Not for himself, but for the woman and the child who had no idea the underworld was about to turn its attention toward them.

"Find her," he told the men outside his door. "Find her now. Quietly. No one knows she exists until I do."

He was too late.

Two floors below the club, in a secret room, a phone was already ringing. Someone inside Lorenzo's own organization had been paid years ago to ensure the De Luca bloodline ended.

It would not end quietly.

Lisbon had always been a city of ghosts for Isabella. As their taxi wound through the historic streets, the terracotta rooftops of the Alfama district blurred past her window, each turn triggering a different memory. This city had played a part in almost every major upheaval of her family's history."I can't stop thinking about how many times we've ended up here," she told Lorenzo. "Rafael. Beatriz. And now, whatever is left of the person who started this whole conspiracy."Elena was waiting for them at the hotel, looking like she hadn't slept in days. She had the wired, focused energy of someone who had spent the last seventy-two hours digging through archives and chasing leads."I found her," Elena said, spreading a handful of documents across the small hotel table. "But be careful—this isn't as simple as just walking up to her and demanding answers.""What's the catch?" Lorenzo asked."Madame Serrano—if that’s even her real name—is now Dr. Helena Castro," Elena explained. "She’s a

"Who is she?" Isabella asked. She kept her voice low, but the urgency was there, cutting through the sterile quiet of the visitation room."I only knew her as Madame Serrano," Marchetti said. His voice was frail, sounding like he was physically straining to pull the memory from decades ago. "Though I suspected even then that the name was just another mask. She operated across Europe in the sixties and seventies, long before we ever met. She built a massive amount of influence through the kind of patient manipulation that I eventually tried to copy.""How do you know her?" Lorenzo asked."I sought her out," Marchetti admitted. "Early in my career, I’d heard rumors about her ability to navigate the kind of dangerous world I wanted to master. She agreed to mentor me for a few years. She taught me everything I eventually used against your family."Isabella felt a knot of unease tighten in her chest. "And you think she’s still active?""It’s possible," Marchetti said. "During my time in he

The letter came through official channels, smelling of sterile offices and government ink. The moment Isabella saw the return address—the correctional facility where Teodoro Marchetti had spent the last few years paying for his crimes—she felt a familiar chill run down her spine."It's from the prison," she told Lorenzo. She stared at the envelope for a long moment, hesitant to touch it, before finally sliding it open.Inside was a formal notice from the warden, followed by a handwritten letter. Even after all this time, she recognized Marchetti’s script immediately: precise, deliberate, and cold.Dear Isabella and Lorenzo,I don’t write to you as the man who tried to tear your family apart, but as an old man who has recently learned that his time is running out faster than he expected. The doctors here tell me my heart is giving out. Facing the end, I find there is one last thing I need to tell you—something I kept back during my confession. There was a detail I didn't disclose durin

They made it back to New York in the early summer, just as the brownstone’s garden was hitting its peak. Over the next few months, Isabella felt herself settling into a kind of quiet, steady peace—the sort of stability this family had never really known before.Matteo was seven now and growing more independent by the day. His friendship with Oliver, which had started in kindergarten, had only grown stronger as they moved through elementary school together. His obsession with architecture had deepened, too. Isabella often found him sprawled out on the study floor, sketching buildings with a level of detail that gave her a bittersweet ache of longing for her own father."Look, Mama," he said one afternoon, holding up a drawing of their own home. It was surprisingly accurate, though he’d made one specific change. "I made the windows bigger because I like how the light comes in.""It's beautiful, my love," Isabella said, touched that he noticed the same small details she had spent her ent

"I’ll be honest, Isabella, I wasn't sure how you'd take this."Contessa Fontaine didn't waste any time. As Isabella sat in the quiet, upscale office of the Council's New York branch, the Contessa slid a modest folder across the table. Lorenzo sat close by, and Elena stayed in the room, acting as the professional anchor and witness to whatever was about to be revealed."I want to reassure you first," the Contessa said, her voice softening. "Whatever is in here isn't a threat. It’s just history. Important history that your father chose to keep from you. Given everything you’ve dealt with regarding his family, I think you can understand why he felt that silence was the safest bet.""Just tell me," Isabella said, her voice tight."Constança’s memories gave me a starting point for some research," the Contessa explained. "It turns out your grandmother had a younger sister, born after the family split—the rift that eventually separated your father from Rafael. This sister stayed in Portugal.

  • His Miracle Heir   Chapter Ninety-Four: A Familiar Face

Isabella’s composure slipped for a moment, her breath hitching in surprise. "You knew my father?""Quite well, many years ago," the elderly woman replied. Her face was lined with age, but her eyes were warm. "My name is Constança Ribeiro. Your father and I studied architecture together for a while, before he moved to Brazil. I’ve thought of him often over the years, wondering what happened to that talent and that gentle soul of his."Something in Isabella's chest tightened, and she felt the sudden prickle of tears. It was a strange, heavy feeling—to find a piece of her father’s past in a place she never expected. "He passed away five years ago," she said softly. "Cancer. I only recently found out about the mess his family left behind—his half-brother, Rafael, and all the things he spent his whole life trying to run away from."Constança’s expression softened. "I am so sorry. And yes, I knew bits and pieces of that history, though he rarely spoke of it, even to those of us who were clo
