Chapter 2

Author: Maroon Cypress
"Whatever you want."

The call ended. My world fell back into silence.

My throat felt tightly blocked. It was raw and aching, as if something were stuck there. Tears slid down uncontrollably, one after another.

My parents-in-law were good people. Even though there was no love left between Orion and me, I still hoped my parents-in-law would stay healthy and live long lives.

Yet now, Mr. Hale lay in the emergency room, while his own son would rather be tangled up with an assistant than come to the hospital and stand watch.

They came from scholarly families, well-mannered and dignified. They didn’t want to argue with Vera in public, but they never imagined that their restraint would only give her more confidence, emboldening her to hurl insults until she quite literally angered Mr. Hale into the hospital.

Two hours earlier, I had been accompanying my parents-in-law at Mooncrest Pavilion for dinner.

Mooncrest Pavilion used to be my family’s restaurant. It was also Orion’s parents’ favorite place to eat, as well as Orion’s.

Before we left, Mrs. Hale carefully packed up the remaining bouillabaisse.

"Orion said he’s coming home for dinner tonight. When he was little, this bouillabaisse from Mooncrest Pavilion was his favorite. I’ll take it back and cook some pasta for him, and satisfy his craving."

She smiled with her eyes half-closed, telling me stories from Orion’s childhood, when suddenly a figure rushed forward and slapped the bouillabaisse out of her hands.

The soup splashed all over her face and clothes, even into her eyes. I didn’t have time to demand an explanation. Neither did Mr. Hale. We hurried to wipe her clean.

However, Vera refused to let it go.

"Lyra, do you even know what kind of place this is? This is Mooncrest Pavilion! Where did trashy, poor people like you come from? You can’t even finish a bowl of bouillabaisse without packing it up, and you still have the nerve to eat here?"

She stood in sky-high heels, wrapped head to toe in luxury brands Orion had bought for her as she peered down at my parents-in-law with undisguised arrogance.

"Look at what these two old things are wearing. What kind of rags are those? If your parents are that poor, they should eat at a roadside stall. Why come to Mooncrest Pavilion? Orion was right about you. You married him for his money. Shameless."

Mr. Hale understood immediately. She had mistaken them for my parents and was deliberately humiliating them as poor relatives.

Being the dignified man Mr. Hale was, he didn’t expose her mistake. Instead, he chose to speak up on behalf of my parents.

"Young lady, how can you speak like that? Whether someone is qualified to enter Mooncrest Pavilion isn’t for you to decide. And how old are you, anyway? We are your elders. Lyra is also several years older than you. You should show some respect and apologize."

Vera didn’t apologize. Instead, she lifted her high heel and swung it hard at his face. If I hadn’t reacted quickly and blocked it, the heel would have struck his eye.

She snorted coldly. "You want me to apologize? Do you even know who I am? I’m the girlfriend of the president of the Hale Group. If I so much as open my mouth, he’d give me Mooncrest Pavilion itself. And what are you, exactly?

"You probably don’t even know this yet. Your precious daughter was kicked out of the Hale family a long time ago. She didn’t get a single cent. And here you are, eating a fancy meal, enjoying yourselves, expecting Orion to foot the bill? Keep dreaming."

Before her words had even finished falling, a neat row of men in Mooncrest Pavilion uniforms lined up behind her.

The staff I used to manage here had long since been replaced. My parents-in-law were low-key by nature, so no one recognized us.

The men bowed respectfully to Vera, then, without a word, forced the three of us down onto the ground.

"Lyra, aren’t you so close with Mr. and Mrs. Hale? Then go to hell and keep them company. I’ll help you. You can go down and show filial piety on Orion’s behalf, okay?"She slowly raised the knife in her hands, gripping it tightly with both hands, and drove it straight toward me.At the critical moment, Orion lunged forward and blocked me with his arm. The blade pierced straight through it, and blood sprayed across my face like a fountain. It seemed to have hit a major artery.Orion’s face went deathly pale. He didn’t look at me. He only spoke softly, trying to calm me, "Lyra, don’t be afraid. I won’t give her another chance to hurt you. Let me protect you one last time."Vera screamed and tried to scramble up, but Orion grabbed her arm and held her down."Orion, what are you doing? Don’t be impulsive! I’m carrying the Hale family’s bloodline!"Before she could finish, Orion drove the knife into Vera’s abdomen."Enough, Vera. I spared your life only because I thought you could g

The will stated clearly that Orion had been unfilial and was unworthy of being the Hale family’s heir.Mr. and Mrs. Hale declared that they would formally adopt me as their daughter and appoint me as the Hale family’s successor, leaving all of their estate to me.The lawyer also played a video as supporting evidence. In the footage, Mr. Hale was undergoing emergency resuscitation. Mrs. Hale had collapsed outside the operating room. I ran back and forth between the two, caring for them tirelessly, while Orion’s phone remained unreachable the entire time. When the call finally connected, Orion’s voice came through, dripping with contempt. "If there’s an emergency, find a doctor. If he dies, find a funeral home. What’s calling me going to do? I won’t give you a single cent. Tell Lyra to give it up."Vera’s voice followed immediately after. "It’s been three hours, and he’s still not dead? This old Scrooge is really clinging on just to scam money from Orion. What a rotten family, every

The first time Orion threw the divorce agreement in my face, I didn’t hesitate. I tore it up on the spot."Orion, believe me. I will pay back every cent I owe you. We’ve shared so many years together. I don’t want it to end like this. Give me another chance, okay?"Later, no matter what I said, Orion no longer believed me.After that, I became like chewing gum stuck to his shoe. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get rid of me. So he changed tactics. He found every possible way to hit me, curse at me, humiliate me, and took pleasure in it.I sold Mooncrest Pavilion and returned the money to his parents.Orion didn’t believe it. He thought his parents were helping cover for me. Even his visits home became far and few.By the time I finally grew exhausted from living so humbly, and understood that Orion truly no longer loved me and that it was time to let go completely, he still didn’t believe it.He thought it was another scheme of mine, one to split his assets. But what h

The heel pierced straight through Vera’s lip. Her mouth instantly filled with dirty, blood-stained saliva.Gripping her chin, I offered a cold reminder. "Get used to it first. When the time comes for the firing squad, it’ll hurt even more."Orion tossed her aside like a piece of trash, leaving her sprawled outside the intensive care unit. "You wait right here. If my mom needs blood or any organs, they’ll be taken directly from you. Do you understand?"Vera hesitated for just a second before Orion grabbed her hair and dragged her toward the window again."I understand! I understand! I was wrong, Orion, I was wrong. I’ll do whatever you say!"After beating Vera, Orion did something unprecedented. He carefully carried a bowl of bouillabaisse and held it out in front of me. "Lyra, you’ve worked hard. Have some bouillabaisse."I found it laughable. And tragic."Do you know why Mom and Dad insisted on eating at Mooncrest Pavilion today?"It was because they knew you loved Mooncrest P

"Mom!"Orion screamed and charged forward, crashing into several doctors along the way.He viciously grabbed the sleeve of the nearest doctor and roared, "What happened to my mom? What’s going on? Why didn’t anyone notify me? Why didn’t anyone call me?"Using the last of my strength, I forced him away and let the doctors begin resuscitation as quickly as possible. Then I turned to look at Orion, who had collapsed onto the floor. My voice was cold."Was no one trying to notify you, or were you too arrogant to believe it? You know the answer yourself. If Mom dies today, you will bear full responsibility as her biological son."At the morgue, Orion and I saw Mr. Hale lying beneath a white sheet. My heart seized painfully, wave after wave. I couldn’t accept that such a gentle, upright, kind man had suddenly left this world.Just that afternoon, Mr. Hale had still been smiling over dinner, praising Mooncrest Pavilion for serving food that was just as good as ever. He had held my h

Vera panicked. "Orion, why are you keeping this gold-digger? Isn’t she bad luck?"Orion merely kept kissing Vera’s hair, again and again. "Baby, don’t you think it’s interesting to keep her here and let her watch how affectionate we are? Baby, I’m not done playing yet. Let’s go for another round, okay?"A rag had been stuffed into my mouth. I could only watch helplessly as the man who had once loved me for five years now held another woman and tangled with her in passion.Time passed, second by second. Orion showed no intention of getting up. Instead, he carried out wave after wave of deliberate, extravagant psychological humiliation against me.Three hours had already passed since I came to find him. I had no phone, no way to contact Mrs. Hale, no way of knowing what was happening at the hospital.Thinking of her bearing everything alone, I closed my eyes in despair.I didn’t know how much time passed before the sound of a phone ringing pulled me out of unconsciousness. It was
