Chapter 5 The Bride Who Chose the Sea

Author: Much Better
The fake-death agency called me one last time. "Ms. Lane, all of your identity records in this country have been erased. Your new ID, new phone number, and flight ticket have all been prepared."

The representative's voice was calm and professional. "During the wedding vows, you'll jump into the ocean as planned. Our team will be on standby to extract you."

I answered quietly, "When the time comes, make sure my old phone is delivered to my fiancé."

The representative replied, "Of course."

After a brief pause, he added, "We wish you a brand-new life."

The call had barely ended when Adrian came home. He didn't notice how many things were missing from the house.

His attention was entirely on coaxing me.

"Willow, let's use the ring I bought you instead." He took my hand, kissed the back of it, and looked at me with affection. "That's the ring I used to propose to you. It means more to me than something crafted by another designer, doesn't it?"

Then, he smiled and said, "We're getting married so soon! I'm really excited. Willow, soon we'll be husband and wife. No more fighting, alright?"

I pulled my hand away. "Okay."

Adrian lit up immediately.

Then, his phone started buzzing nonstop.

I saw Evelyn's name flash across the screen.

When I saw the hesitation in his face, I did my best to ignore it and say flatly, "Work? Go on. I'll be fine here alone."

His chest flickered with panic at my indifference.

Previously, I always responded in kind whenever he expressed his love to me.

However, I'd become distant for the past two days.

Calls at this hour used to worry me, prompting me to fuss over him. I would go on and on about how he was overworking while I went to the kitchen to prepare some late-night snacks for him. I’d even offer my help.

Now, I asked no questions, voiced no concerns, and offered nothing.

Evelyn kept calling. Based on the glimpses I caught from his screen, I could tell she had already sent more intimate photos.

Adrian's hesitation vanished.

"Willow, I'll finish up quickly." He looked at me guiltily before grabbing his coat. "I'll come right back to be with you."

I watched him scurry out like the rat he was.

A mocking smile tugged at my lips as I thought, 'Thank God we never signed the papers or had any kids. Otherwise, walking away would be so much harder.'

...

Adrian finally came home on the day of the wedding.

He was waiting for me downstairs.

I walked down in my gown and met his gaze; my expression stayed entirely composed, showing no hint of a bride's joy.

Adrian's excited expression faltered.

In his memory, I was always smiling softly at him.

My eyes had always sparkled when I looked at him, but not anymore. Now, they felt empty and lifeless.

He instinctively reached for me, trying to quell his discomfort.

"Willow, you're beautiful." His voice was thick with emotion. "You're the most beautiful bride in the world."

He smiled. "I'm the happiest man alive today."

I wondered, 'Is that so? I wonder… Will he still feel that way when I die at our wedding?'

I stepped away from his embrace.

"You'll ruin my makeup. Don't touch me."

Then, I got into the car.

Adrian froze, a frown pulling at his face before he followed me in.

The wedding took place on a luxury yacht—grand, extravagant, and perfectly polished. However, he had forgotten I never cared about such things.

As I stood on the deck in a white wedding gown, I could see the ocean stretching endlessly around us. Then, I heard the officiant ask, "Ms. Willow Lane, do you take Mr. Adrian Ashford to be your husband?"

Adrian looked at me expectantly.

I smiled genuinely, then I answered clearly, "I do not."

Adrian looked at me in horror, his face turning ashen. "Why?" he asked, his voice trembling. "What happened?"

I gazed straight at him. "Adrian, your love is worthless. I've never been the type to share my husband. We're done."

Finally, I smiled at him.

"In this life or the next, we will never see each other again."

With that, I lifted the hem of my white dress and leaped into the raging sea.

  • His Perfect Love Was a Secret   Chapter 11 The Life I Chose After Him

Adrian looked like a stray, specifically a dog that had been abandoned. He looked desperate and pitiful as he pleaded for forgiveness. I stepped out of his embrace at once and said sternly, "Leave. Willow Lane is dead. I don't want to see you." He froze where he stood. Then, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and pulled me into his arms. His voice broke. "You said you'd love me forever and never leave me." I couldn't help but laugh at his face. "You still believe in promises?" I looked right at him and questioned sharply, "Have you ever felt the slightest bit of guilt when you told me I was the only woman you loved?" Promises meant nothing to me now. His face turned pale and strained upon hearing my words. Still, something scary flickered across his face. Then, he moved closer and closer, crowding me. His voice was hoarse with desperation. "Why?" he asked. "Why fake your death and abandon me?" When I said nothing, he continued in an almost frantic tone, "Do you know ho

  • His Perfect Love Was a Secret   Chapter 10 The Stranger Who Found Me

The first clue came from Evelyn's own social media. A man's hand appeared at the edge of the frame in several of her pictures, his ring visible. It was the matching band Adrian and I had exchanged on our third anniversary. The initials "WL" were faintly engraved inside. The internet exploded. Soon, people dug up the truth. Adrian had been cheating on me with Evelyn for three years. Due to that betrayal, everyone finally understood why I had depression and decided to "die" on my wedding day. Anonymous insiders began leaking more evidence, including photos, videos, and screenshots of Evelyn's taunting messages. This proof revealed that Adrian and Evelyn had been sneaking around behind my back for years. The public was furious, and it soon spiraled out of control. People flooded Ashford Group's official accounts, demanding answers and calling for a boycott. Everyone could imagine how desperate I must have felt. The love story Adrian had flaunted to the world was noth

  • His Perfect Love Was a Secret   Chapter 9 He Finally Blames Himself

Now, the woman sobbing so pitifully in front of him was the one he blamed for killing the only person he had ever loved. Evelyn cried as she grabbed the hem of his shirt. "You loved me too, didn't you? Otherwise, why would you keep me by your side for three whole years?” Adrian's face contorted with disgust. "At first, I only sought revenge. Later, I found it amusing to keep you as a toy, so I did. What makes you believe you could ever match Willow? How could you ever consider yourself a worthy replacement?” Adrian looked at Evelyn for a long moment. The woman who once brought him excitement, novelty, and temptation now appeared ugly and revolting in his eyes. He suddenly crouched down and grabbed her chin hard. "You want forgiveness?” Evelyn's crying ceased, and hope lit up her eyes. 'He still loves me. He has to. If he didn't, why else would he have kept me by his side for three years? Now, Willow is dead. How could a dead woman ever compete with me?' However, she had cel

  • His Perfect Love Was a Secret   Chapter 8 He Blames Evelyn for My Death

Unfortunately, I never once appeared in Adrian's dreams, no matter how many times he drank himself to oblivion. He dropped the empty bottle in his hand and reached for another. Before he could grab it, a pair of hands caught his wrist. Evelyn looked down at him, her pretty face full of concern. "Adrian, why are you drinking so much all of a sudden?" Through his drunken haze, all he could see was a woman looking at him with concern. For one brief, drunken moment, her voice and figure looked so much like me. "Willow?" His eyes lit up. "Willow, you finally came to see me." He staggered to his feet and pulled the woman into his arms. Then, he buried his face in her neck as he broke down in tears. "Willow, I was wrong. I'm so sorry. You finally came to see me. Do you know how much I've missed you since you've been gone?" Evelyn froze in shock. She repeated his name multiple times, but Adrian didn't seem to hear her. He kept calling my name repeatedly. Hatred flashed throug

  • His Perfect Love Was a Secret   Chapter 7 The Funeral of the Century

Tears streamed down Adrian's face. The crushing weight of his regret seemed too much for anyone to bear. He covered his face with both hands and broke into uncontrollable sobs. The wedding that had been broadcast nationwide as the wedding of the century had become the funeral of the century. Not long after, the professional recovery team brought up my "body." Adrian tried to rush over, but others stopped him. All he could do was watch as they gradually carried my "body" toward him. The representative said, "Mr. Ashford, please accept our condolences." However, Adrian appeared to have lost his mind. He refused to accept that I was gone, lunging at the man in black and grabbing him by the collar. "Who the hell are you?" His voice cracked. "What kind of sick nonsense are you talking about?" He shoved the man aside and staggered toward where my "body" was lying. Then, he saw the face inside. Suddenly, all his strength drained away. He collapsed to his knees with a heavy t

  • His Perfect Love Was a Secret   Chapter 6 The Phone I Left Behind

I heard Adrian's broken scream over the roar of the waves. "Willow! No!" The raging water swallowed me within seconds. Panic spread throughout the yacht as guests screamed and people hurried to seek help. Adrian tried to jump in after me, but several people grabbed him and held him back. Then, a man in a black suit appeared before him. His expression was cold and unreadable. "Are you Mr. Adrian Ashford, Ms. Lane's fiancé?" He held out a phone and said, "This was Ms. Lane's old phone. She said she had a surprise for you." Adrian froze. He shakily took the phone and unlocked it. The moment the screen lit up, he saw the wallpaper—an intimate and shameless photo of him and Evelyn. His fingers shook as he opened the photo album. Inside, there were numerous filthy pictures, screenshots, and chat records. Evelyn had also uploaded photos and videos of the two of them. All the color drained from Adrian's face. It was only at that moment that he understood why I had lea
