Chapter 9

Author: Teeny-Tiny Fish
Irritated by Zachary's cold expression, Madison blurted out, "I'm planning to propose to Elroy!"

Zachary stopped in his tracks. She didn't know why she had told him that. Perhaps she simply wanted to see how he would react.

Zachary turned around, his expression perfectly calm. "Congratulations to you both."

Madison couldn't believe how unfazed he was. Anger flashed across her face. "Do you have nothing else to say?"

He pondered, then gave her a meaningful smile. "I'll prepare a special gift for you."

It felt as though a stone had lodged in her chest, leaving her gasping for breath. An indescribable feeling alchemized into anger.

Clenching her fists, she spat out, "You'd better keep your nose clean, just as you are now. If anything happens to Elroy, I won't let you get away with it."

Zachary didn't look at her again. He walked away without turning back. He couldn't wait for her reaction when she heard the recording on their engagement day.

When he got home, he packed up the last bit of his belongings. Only a single suitcase remained in the room.

On his final day, Zachary went to the theater he and Madelyn had once promised to visit together. He sat on the steps, lost in thought.

Out of the blue, Elroy's voice rang out behind him. "Zachary, you really are like a bad penny that keeps turning up!"

Rage twisted his face. He looked as though he was confronting a mortal enemy, itching to charge over and beat him up.

Zachary didn't expect to run into him again.

He prepared to leave, but Elroy strode over in a few steps and gritted out, "Looks like yesterday's lesson wasn't memorable enough. How dare you show up where Mads performs and wait for her! I'll kill you today!"

With that, he moved to attack Zachary.

Zachary had no intention of giving Elroy a second chance to hurt him. He grabbed Elroy's hand and shoved him away with all his might.

"You've got it wrong. I had no idea she was performing here today."

Taken aback by his retaliation, Elroy exploded and prepared to lunge at him. During that split second, he saw Madison emerging from the building out of the corner of his eye.

Swiftly changing tactics, he yelped and threw himself to the ground. "Mads, help me!"

Hearing his cry, Madison turned around just in time to see Elroy plunging to the ground. She hurried over and found him clutching his foot, screaming in agony.

"Mads, my leg hurts! What if it's broken?"

She looked up and spotted Zachary standing nearby. Her visage instantly turned frigid. "Did you push him?"

Zachary found it all comical. It was the same, overused trick, yet Madison fell for it every single time.

"Would you believe me if I said I didn't?" he shot back.

She froze, about to consider his words, when Elroy cried out in pain again.

He grabbed Madison's sleeve and complained pitifully, "Mr. Suffold, I know you're upset because Mads and I are getting engaged, but that doesn't mean you can shove me!

"I'm a model. My career depends on walking the runway. Are you trying to ruin my career for good?"

He spoke through tears, his demeanor fueling Madison's growing anger. "Didn't I warn you to stay away from Elroy?" she snapped.

Zachary's face was pale with pain from yesterday's injuries. He gritted out, "I told you, I didn't!"

Madison refused to listen. She grabbed him and slammed him to the ground.

Her gaze was vicious as she snarled, "I let you off the hook yesterday, but you clearly haven't learned your lesson. You even tried to ruin Elroy's leg! You'll pay for this!"

Without giving Zachary a chance to react, she kicked him hard, sending him tumbling down the stairs.

Zachary's vision went black. The world spun around him as he rolled helplessly down the stairs. Unlike Elroy, he couldn't even make a sound.

He felt as though every bone in his body would shatter. Then he slammed hard against the steps. His vision grew dimmer. The surroundings grew quieter, too.

His sight and hearing were fading. The last thing he made out was Madison helping Elroy to his feet and walking off without a backward glance.

As consciousness slipped away, one thought rose in Zachary's dazed mind.

Was he finally going to die? Maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea. At least he could finally visit Madelyn's world.

When he opened his eyes again, he was lying in a hospital bed.

"You have a concussion from the fall," a nurse told him. "You'll need to be warded for a few days. Do you have any family?"

Zachary's eyes immediately rimmed red. No, he did not.

In the past, aside from his grandmother, Madelyn was the only person who had ever cared about him. After she died, his grandmother passed away, too. Since then, he had been all alone.

The good news was, after today, he would finally get to see Madelyn's face again.

Wiping away his tears, Zachary arranged his own discharge. When he returned home, he took out the USB drive with the recording, wrapped it carefully, and sent it to Madison's home.

With everything packed, he was ready to leave at any moment.

Before departing, he sent Madison two final messages.

"The theater has surveillance cameras. If you want to know what really happened, check the footage.

"Also, don't forget to accept my gift."

With that, he grabbed his suitcase and walked away without a second thought.

Zachary had just arrived at the airport when his phone blew up.

On the day Zachary was discharged from the hospital, he visited Madison one last time. She was lying on a hospital bed, wrapped in thick bandages from head to toe and considerably thinner than before. She started laughing self-deprecatingly at the sight of him."Did you and Madelyn get engaged in the end?" she asked.Zachary shook his head.Seemingly comforted by that fact, Madison continued almost as if to herself, "That's just as well. Since I can't have you, nobody else should either."Zachary was momentarily left speechless. He lifted his hand to show that the engagement ring on his ring finger had been replaced with a wedding ring."Thanks to you, instead of getting engaged, we just got married," he revealed. As Madison gazed at the ring, she suddenly started laughing. Her laughter turned to tears, and she lay limply in bed."I brought all this upon myself," she stated. If she'd treated Zachary a little better back then, would the outcome have been different?Would she

Three months later, the day of Zachary and Madelyn's engagement party arrived.Madison walked through the orchestra's back door to see Zachary and Madelyn's wedding photo displayed on the large screen. They looked dazzlingly beautiful in the photo, and their smiles were filled with happiness.Madison quickly teared up at the sight. Her performance had taken a nosedive ever since she returned from the hospital. She still had her hands, but she could no longer play the same melodies as before. Although she had once been a high-and-mighty principal pianist, she was now no more than a nameless pianist in the orchestra.Yet, none of that mattered to her anymore. She only cared for Zachary right now.She couldn't bear to see him marry another woman. After arriving at the hotel in which the engagement party was being held, she changed into a chauffeur's uniform and slipped into the convoy.Zachary was still wholly unaware when he got into the car.It wasn't until the scenery outside

On the night Madelyn regained her memories, Zachary fell asleep leaning against her hospital bed.Madelyn's phone rang, and when she picked up, a bodyguard reported, "Ms. Lockhart, our investigation has revealed that the person who trailed you to the abandoned factory is Elroy Pearson."Madelyn didn't look surprised. Hatred flickered across her gaze. She ordered, "Gather the evidence and have it sent to the police station. If memory serves me right, he works as a model, doesn't he? Spread the word around. I want to ensure that he never again sets foot on a runway."After hanging up, she looked toward Zachary. She felt nothing but grateful that he was alright. On the day she was to be discharged, Zachary went to settle the paperwork only to unexpectedly encounter Madison in the hallway.Madison had lost quite a lot of weight, and her hair had grown out.Her eyes were filled with deep sadness at the sight of him.She said, "I heard all about the incident. Elroy was behind it."

The following day, Zachary visited the city's old town district. His late maternal grandmother, Margaret Springfield, used to live here. After she passed away, the house fell into disrepair. The houses in this area had long since been abandoned and were no longer structurally sound, but the landscape itself remained the same as before. As he stood beside a wall in the familiar courtyard, he looked at Madelyn and asked, "Does anything come to mind?"He'd intentionally brought Madelyn here that day to help recover her memories.Madelyn looked briefly confused. The courtyard before her felt very familiar. A few memories flashed through her mind, but they were hazy and indistinct.Zachary then tugged her over to the other side, pointed toward an alley, and explained, "We often used to play in this alley. I'd sit on that rock over there while you walked me through my homework."The sound of children's cheerful laughter rang in Madelyn's ears. The view before her seemed to become fami

At that moment, facing down Zachary, Elroy finally experienced the terror of being helpless and alone. He took out his phone and started making a call without hesitation. He asked, "You'll let me go as long as they show up, right? I'll do it. Show me mercy, and I'll never dare cross you again."Zachary smiled mockingly at his lack of hesitation. It turned out that Elroy would even betray his friends as casually as he breathed. He should've had him figured out sooner. After making the appropriate calls, Elroy looked fearfully at Zachary and reported, "I already called them, so please let me go."Zachary walked into a random lounge, then asked unhurriedly, "What's the rush? I'm not as ruthless as you, so it's not as if I'm going to kill you."By the time Elroy's friends arrived, the banquet was almost over. Most of the guests downstairs had already left. When a waiter led Elroy's friends to the second floor, they found Zachary sitting on a couch."Why are you here? Where's Elro

Inside the banquet hall, Zachary carefully applied medication to Madelyn's wounds, his eyes full of heartbreak."Why bother getting physical with her?" he asked.Madelyn smiled nonchalantly. "I simply couldn't bear to see you suffer."Besides, she figured that Madison deserved a beating.Outside the banquet hall, Madison sat slumped on the ground, utterly drained.Elroy came looking for her and, upon seeing her sorry state, his eyes widened in surprise."What's going on? Who did you get into a fight with to end up in such a state?"Madison merely shoved him away coldly."Get lost!"He stared at her in disbelief. "So, you'd rather waste away in a shitty place like this than let me come near you? Do you really hate me that much?"She glared at him. "If you hadn't deliberately set Zachary up, I wouldn't have done so many irreversible things! We're already through, and I never want to see you again."Elroy climbed to his feet in anger, his gaze cold and menacing."In the end, i
