Chapter 4

Penulis: Cocojam
Through a haze, I heard Alex's voice getting closer.

Did he recognize the necklace? Did he finally recognize me?

A tiny flame of hope flickered back to life.

"Keep that stretcher away from Scarlett," Alex's voice was so cold it broke my heart.

"The blood will stain her dress."

Of course. I should never have hoped.

He didn't recognize me. He was just worried about some woman's dress.

"Use the service exit," Scarlett said, pinching her nose in disgust. "The smell of blood is sickening."

The medics were forced to push my gurney toward a dark, narrow corridor.

Darkness swallowed me.

The anesthetic dulled the physical pain, but something inside me had snapped.

There was no future for me and Alex.

I remembered all those romantic nights, him holding me on the balcony, looking at the stars.

"Valentina, I'll give you the most beautiful life. Our child will grow up surrounded by love."

"I'll be the best husband and father in the world."

All those dreams, those tender promises, they ended the moment our child was cut out of me and silenced.

The ambulance sped away from the docks. Blinding headlights shone from the opposite direction.

A convoy of cars blocked our path.

It was Alex's motorcade.

The ambulance was forced to a halt. The driver rolled down his window.

"Let us through! We have a dying maternity patient on board!"

"My wife is giving birth," Alex growled, his face a mask of cold fury. "Get the hell out of my way."

There was a deafening crash.

Alex's car rammed the ambulance, forcing it aside.

The violent jolt woke me from my stupor. Blood gushed from my wound again.

With my last ounce of strength, I screamed out the window, "Your wife is already dying!"

Alex heard me. His face twisted with even more rage.

"Damn it! That killer dares to use my wife's voice to talk about dying! I told you, Valentina is having a baby today! Everything makes way for my wife!"

His voice echoed in the night, stabbing my numb heart again.

"This killer has impersonated Valentina over and over!" Scarlett shrieked from the passenger seat. "It's disgusting!"

"Block that ambulance! Don't let her cause any more trouble!"

Several black cars surrounded the ambulance as armed bodyguards jumped out.

"Let's go, Alex!" Scarlett urged. "It's a long way to the hospital!"

Alex's motorcade sped off, leaving our lone ambulance surrounded.

I lay on the gurney, bleeding out, my life fading away.

"God help you, girl," the doctor said, shaking his head. "You didn't just piss off the devil. You married him."

I closed my eyes with a bitter smile.

Yeah. I didn't just piss off the devil. I married him.

If Alex knew it was me lying here, would he regret it? Or would he just think I deserved it all?

Half an hour later, the bodyguards surrounding us got an urgent command.

"Fall back! We have a more important mission!"

They vanished into the night.

The ambulance finally sped toward the hospital, its emergency lights flashing a blinding red.

"Hurry! Get her to the OR!"

Nurses rushed out.

Just as the gurney was about to enter the emergency room, we ran into Alex again.

He was standing in the hallway, his face a mask of anxiety.

"Goddammit," he spat. "This killer bitch again? Get her out of my sight."

I vaguely heard his words, then lost consciousness completely.

"Who gave me the bad intel!" Alex roared at his second-in-command. "Sent me to the wrong damn hospital! Are you sure Valentina is here? Is she in surgery?"

His deputy fumbled with his phone.

"Yes, Boss! The informant confirmed she was brought here! But we haven't gotten a specific OR number!"

"I want the absolute best medical team for Valentina's delivery!" Alex paced back and forth, frantic. "Nothing can go wrong!"

The nurses wheeled me into an operating room. Neither Alex nor his deputy paid any attention.

To them, I was just some damn killer.

His deputy kept making calls, trying to confirm.

"What's the OR number!"

"Why can't I reach her primary doctor!"

The minutes ticked by. Alex grew more and more impatient.

"Still no news?!"

He was about to assume it was another false lead and leave.

Just as he lost his patience, his deputy suddenly pointed at the operating room I had just been wheeled into. His hand was shaking.

"Boss... it's this operating room..."

Alex's head snapped up. The light above the OR door flickered a few times. Then it went out.

Valentina's POVAlex just stared at me.Then, he slowly pulled a gun from his waistband. He checked the magazine. Six bullets, all loaded."You want me to die, don't you?" he asked softly. His shoulders slumped in defeat. "Alright, Valentina," he whispered. "Okay."He placed the gun in my ruined hand. The cold metal sent a shiver through me."Go on, Valentina," he said, kneeling before me and pressing the muzzle against his own heart. "End it. End my pain, and end your torment."I looked at the gun in my hand.It would be so easy.Just a gentle squeeze of the trigger, and the man who destroyed my life would be gone.My child would be at peace. My pain would end.But I didn't move. Not because I still loved him.But because... letting him die so easily would be getting off too cheap."You think dying will absolve you of your sins?" I asked, my voice cold. "You think one bullet can make up for the life of our child?"Pain flashed in Alex's eyes."Then what do you want me to do?" he choke

Valentina's POV"You're still recovering. When you're stronger, I'll take you to the cemetery."Alex spoke cautiously, as if I were a porcelain doll about to shatter. "Our son... I had the finest tombstone made for him. White marble, and...""I want a divorce."I cut him off.Alex froze, looking as if he'd been struck by lightning. "Valentina, you just woke up. Don't say things like that...""I want the divorce papers on my table tomorrow," I continued. "And don't touch me again."I looked down at my hands. The long, elegant fingers were now twisted into impossible shapes.Purple scars crisscrossed the skin. These hands could never play the cello again. They could never stroke my child's face. But I didn't cry. I didn't feel despair. I didn't even feel anger.I was just... empty."Valentina, please, let me explain..." Alex knelt by my bedside. The feared Godfather was on his knees like a sinner."I'll find the best doctors in the world to fix your hands," he choked out."Germany, Switz

Valentina's POVDarkness. An endless, suffocating darkness. After my heart started beating again, I felt myself floating in a void, not quite alive, but not dead either.Sometimes I could hear Alex's voice, full of desperate sobs and confessions. But I couldn't go back. The Valentina who loved him was dead. She died in the rain at the docks. Died under the hunt he personally ordered.Died the moment our baby's cries were silenced.I heard soft footsteps. Someone entered the room.It wasn't Alex. His steps were heavier, weighed down with guilt. This person's steps were light, but filled with malice."It's ironic, isn't it?" Scarlett's voice echoed in the room, dripping with sick jealousy. "The great Don of New York, so devoted to a vegetable. He even declared war on my family for you."I heard her approach the bed.I could feel her venomous gaze on me."He hasn't slept in three days," she hissed, her voice a venomous whisper. "He's filled this room with cellos. Sits there torturing them

Alex's POV"Everyone out!" the doctor yelled, pushing the crowd away. "The patient needs a sterile environment! Clear the room, now!"I was dragged out of the operating room.I pressed myself against the door, desperately trying to see through the small glass window.I watched them working on Valentina, hooking her up to a maze of machines.I watched her pale face.Half an hour later, the OR door finally opened. The doctor walked out, exhausted, pulling off his blood-stained gloves.I rushed toward him."How is she? How is Valentina?""We brought her back," the doctor said heavily. "But...""But what?" I grabbed his shoulders."Due to the prolonged blood loss, severe emotional trauma, and lack of oxygen to the brain..." The doctor sighed. "She may be in a vegetative state."The words hit me like a physical blow.A vegetative state..."Is there any hope she'll wake up?" I asked, my voice trembling."It's a long shot," the doctor said, shaking his head. "And even if she does, the damage

Alex picked up the silver cross, his hands shaking violently. The words "My eternal love" glinted under the lights. The token of his vow to protect me forever was now a testament to the crime he had committed.Scarlett tried to comfort him."Alex... I know you're sad, but Valentina is...""Get away from her!"Alex roared, shoving her away with a furious burst of strength.Scarlett slammed into the wall, letting out a pained groan."Don't you dare come near her!" Alex yelled. "Don't you touch her!"He pulled a gun from his waistband, the dark muzzle pointed straight at the doctor's head."You see this hospital?" Alex's voice was a low growl, the gun still pressed to the doctor's temple. "If she doesn't walk out of here alive, I'll burn it to the ground. With you in it. Now, save her."The doctor was shaking from head to toe."S-sir, she's gone... Her heart has been stopped for over ten minutes...""Then find a way to make it start again!" Alex pressed the gun to the doctor's temple."Sh

The pain was finally over.I realized I must be dead. The gut-wrenching pain, the desperate screams—they all vanished when my heart stopped. My soul floated in the air, looking down at myself on the operating table. What a wreck. My white dress was soaked in rain and blood, torn to shreds. The dog bites on my ankle were a mess of raw flesh. The gaping wound on my stomach was a horrifying gash. But what hurt the most were my hands.Fingers that were once long and graceful were now purple and twisted, bones jutting out beneath the skin. These were the hands I was so proud of. The hands that played the cello. The hands my beloved husband let be destroyed."There's nothing more we can do," the doctor said, shaking his head. "Go see if the family is here."Just as a nurse was about to leave, the door was kicked open.Alex burst in, his face a storm of anger and disbelief."This isn't Valentina," he roared, his voice cracking. "The informant was wrong. You can't tell me this imposter is my w
