Devon thought about stopping by Kiara’s room before leaving for West Pack, but he knew the temptation to stay back till she is back on her feet will overwhelm him, so he just left her in the care of Luka and Eliza – the two people he’d trust with his soul – and left with Alfonso early in the morning.
The West Pack was a 3-hour journey, but given the reason he was going, he was very sure he was not going to come back that same day. Ketura was a strong and stubborn one, and something tells him that she already knows he was coming, which if his instincts are right, this visit was going to be a long one. Sighing, he rubbed his forehead and turned to Alfonso, who has been scrolling on a tablet with his forehead tightly clenched. “What is wrong?” He shut down the tablet as he released a deep breath, “there has been a suspicious shut down of some our database, and some intel seem to be missing as well. I have given the team some guidelines and everything will be back on track soon.” Devon’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. There were so many reasons his pack was ruled as number one, and his large intel on anybody and any pack was one of them, hence the security system was top notch. A breach seemed extremely suspicious as the system has been up and running for decades now, but Devon chose to cast his suspicions aside – Alfonso was in charge of the computer security and he trusted him to handle this just fine. But the gnawing feeling at the pit of his stomach remained. “Well, keep me posted on it.” Alfonso nodded. “Also, did the rogue reveal any more intel?” “He has been quiet, extremely quiet since he was shown to his room.” “Hmm…” Devon whispered and rubbed the stubble that was growing on his chin – he didn’t keep beards, but he was too stressed to have a proper shave – he knew exactly why he wasn’t speaking. “I guess we’ll get all our answers when we get to the West Pack.” The car grew silent after that, only occasionally filled with the sounds of Alfonso typing or sending a text. Different thoughts, on the other hand, clouded Devon’s mind. They ranged from his pack to Kiara back at home, then it rested on Ketura; particularly on the promise she made him a decade ago. “One day you are going to come find me, Devon, and I will be the one wielding power over you.” Determination had clouded her gaze back then, and he believed her. She was part witch after all, and they are bound to their words. The car slowly came to a halt, and that was when he realized they had reached the West Pack. The once bubbly and lively pack was now a forest, the only thing that showed it was a Pack was the huge signboard on the long gate with the name brandished on it. Everything and everywhere was oddly quiet, and that was how Devon knew there were people already anticipating his arrival and he cracked a smile. He expected nothing less from her. “Ketura, there is no need to play these games, just come out.” No sooner had the words left his mouth, an arrow laced with silver narrowly missed his eyes, and the gate creaked open; revealing a red-haired girl that looked like she was in her mid-twenties, and behind her was a crowd – some of them had shifted, and the rest looked like they were ready to at any moment. “Long time no see, Devon.” She crossed her arm over her chest, revealing the snake tattoo that covered her entire left arm, while her eyes blazing with anger. Devon’s eyes took in the crowd behind her and he tucked his hands into his pockets and walked over to them. He bent to Ketura’s height and whispered in her ears, “10 minutes top, that’s all it’d take to have their hands snapped clean off their shoulders, and that time limit is for my driver. I expected you to be better prepared for this.” “I am…” slipping out the knife she kept hidden in her sleeves, and attempted to stab him with, but he caught her hand right on time and in a second, he twisted her hand to her back and forced to her knees. “I think it is best for the rest of you to let go of whatever idea you have right now and get lost.” The rogues glanced at each other and started walking back by taking small steps, but Ketura’s voice stopped them in their tracks. “A blood oath hangs around your neck; you are bound by your blood to give your life for me if that is what is required.” A groan escaped her lips when Devon pressed down hard on her twisted arm, but she didn’t stop, “Da mihi animam tuam.” The rogues instantly seemed to lose their abilities to think, their eyes rolled to the back of their heads – making only the sclera visible- and like zombies, they mindlessly began to attack. “I will leave them up to you,” he glanced at Alfonso and Bacchus, who were already fending off the wolves. “Kill them all, she has asked for their lives.” He disappeared into the pack, shutting the gate tightly behind him. “If that is all you’ve got, you wasted not just my time, but you have also wasted a decade for nothing!” Ketura groaned, spitting out blood as her back hit the wall violently. “Is this all you planned? A bunch of rogues? I expected better.” Her lips curved up in a smile, and she wiped the blood off her lips with the back of her hand as she slowly stood to her feet despite the pain shooting up her back. “Devon Vukovic,” she said his name like a curse. “Ketura Afra,” he called back – one way to avoid a witch’s curse was to be careful with names, and after being around her kind, he knew what to do. She breathed out a laugh at his response; she knew he knew things to do to shield himself from a curse, but he did not know it all. “Do you remember what you did to me 10 years ago, Devon?” anger coursed through her veins when she saw the guilt that quickly flashed through his eyes, she knows he remembers, and that was going to be his downfall. Before the cursed wipe fifteen years, Werewolves and witches were creatures that co-existed peacefully. They made up for each other’s flaws and supported each other when needed, but werewolves are greedy creatures. Suddenly they wanted everything for themselves; the charms, curses, magic, they suddenly wanted it all, they waged a war against the witches, and they triumphed. They wiped out a great number of witches and those remaining went into hiding; Ketura was one of them. She had discovered Devon’s secret and that of his pack, and in desperation for cover and protection, she had used it as blackmail and got offered a place. Ketura soon realized she didn’t need to blackmail him because him and his pack weren’t involved in the cursed wipe, and Akira Pack became a home for her, but all that ended 10 years ago when she made the mistake of falling in love with Devon. They had a fling; it was an assumed mutual agreement – no strings attached. They had fun together, she played his luna,
Akira pack, that was all that was running through Kiara’s head as she laid on her bed. When you think of the werewolf community, the Akira Pack would be the first pack to come to mind. They were not particularly the biggest in population, but they had the biggest landmass acquired from years of getting into wars and winning. They had the biggest database, so much so they could overthrow the leading council and be on top; funnily enough, it was an unspoken reality of things, they also possessed the strongest soldiers, and according to rumors, most of the pack members have abilities that are alien to the rest of the werewolves, giving them an edge over everyone else.Suddenly Devon’s arrogance and the vastness of the pack made sense.Sitting up from her bed, Kiara began pacing around the room as thoughts and realizations flooded her mind. In a pack like this, getting her wolf back wouldn’t be a big deal, they will surely know what to do. And Kristen? Exerting her revenge on him suddenly
“Half-brother?” No sooner had the words left her mouth, and a low growl escaped Marcos’ lips. His once grey eyes suddenly turned blue, and they were firmly rooted on Kiara’s face. “It can’t be,” he took a step towards her, and in running away from him, she tumbled over the soldier she rendered unconscious, and fell on her bum. Instantly, Marcos reached out and helped her to her feet. “I am not going to hurt you,” he whispered, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears, “you are my mate after all.”The words registered late in Kiara’s head, but the second it did, she immediately jumped out of his hold; her eyes as wide as saucer pans. “That is impossible. I already have a mate.”“But you are still my mate, I am not wrong about that.”A forced laugh left Kiara’s lips and she shock her head. “What sick and twisted game are you playing?” anger seeped through her veins, and she balled her hands into fists, “I cannot be your mate, I already have a mate! Don’t fucking play games with me.”The
“Can you repeat what you just said?” Devon grabbed Marcos’ collar, he wanted to tear him into shreds, but the promise he made to their father kept him caged, but he was getting to his limit. When he walked in and saw all of them seated together, he assumed the worst was over, but turns out his stupid brother was still as stupid as ever.“I said -“ he released his collar from his hold, eyes boring into Devon’s, “-that she is my mate as well.”Devon scoffed and in a flash raised his fist to punch him again, “shouldn’t you hear him out first?” Kiara piped in, tired of the constant fight that has been going on, and Devon paused midway, “His claim is the very reason we are all here, you should at least hear him out.”Turning to get a better look at her, Devon’s hand slumped to his side and he scoffed. “Do you even know what you are saying? What do you know about this bastard that you are asking me to hear him out?”Silence reigned as the both of them held eye contact, “I don’t know anythin
“How about we focus on getting back my wolf,” Kiara inputted, breaking the ice and the two brothers turned to her, “that will answer all the questions. So why not focus on that?” “That is a good idea,” Luka piped in, grateful for the tension breaker. Devon and Marcos looked at each other and released a deep breath. “Fine then, you can come to my pack with me, and I will help you.” “And what makes you think I’ll let you leave with her? She is safer here, and this pack is more capable of helping her than yours” “How safe is it really if I swooped in and almost took her to mine, seamlessly ,might I add?” “That is...” “Enough.” Kiara said, exasperated, and they both turned to her, “You two must not bicker like an old married couple over the simplest of things.” Displeasure coated Devon’s face, but amusement coated Marcos’. “What do you suggest we do then? You cannot be at both packs.” “I know, Devon, that’s why I’ll be staying where I have b
Kiara didn’t know how to feel when she opened the door to see Devon, and he wasn’t shirtless. She gulped and folded her hands over her chest as if to wedge the disappointment inside her from seeping out.“What are you doing here? Isn’t it too late for you to be here?”Devon’s eyes slowly trailed down her body as if taking her in. She was fully dressed earlier, but now she was just putting on a silky nightdress, and it maddened him. The thought of Marcos ever having to see her in that way fired a certain rage in him, and without meaning to he let out a low growl. “You shouldn’t be putting that on to open your door.”She angled her to the side and raised a brow. “It’s late evening, why should anyone be coming up to my door at this time?” Her hands pushed up her breasts as she asked and Devon’s gaze instantly zeroed on them, causing his hands to ball into fists.“Please cover u
A lady walked into her room just as Kiara was done dressing up. She couldn’t tell if she woke up on the wrong side of the bed or if today was just wrong, but she felt snappy and angry, her joints also hurt for reasons she couldn’t pinpoint.“Is there anything I can help you with?” She asked after waiting for a few minutes and the lady wasn’t saying anything. As if snapped out of a trance, Amira cleared her throat and straightened her back. “I am sorry, ma’am. The alpha sent me to give you a rundown of what your day is going to look like today.”Instantly, Kiara’s lips puckered up, but she didn’t voice out her displeasure at having her day planned out without being informed prior, instead she nudged the girl to continue.“According to the schedule, you are to be having breakfast right about now -“ a knock interrupted them, and when the door was pushed open, a maid wheeled in a basket of
Kiara found herself unable to pull away from Devon. Her body only wanted to be beside him, and no matter how much she fought it, she couldn’t help but cling to him. She knew that given what today was, separating herself from him was going to be an impossible task and that created an unsettling feeling at the pit of her stomach. The urge to be beside him, with him, was only going to grow as the day went by and she doesn’t know just how much willpower she has to resist till the full moon passes. From across the room, Marcos stared at them with his eyes narrowed in slits. He couldn’t understand why she only wanted to be around him and not both of them at least. His hands balled into fists when he realized that the only time Kiara had looked his way today, her eyes were filled with anger and disgust.“What did you do to her?” He blurted out, unable to keep it in anymore and Devon raised his perfectly arched but bushy brow as amusement danced in hi
Kiara walkked out of her room with a smile on her face, but her mind swirled with thoughts from her talk with Devon on their date. She tried to believe his words that the moon goddess wouldn't have chosen her if she wasn't capable of it, but she couldn't. She only ended up as his mate because Kristen betrayed her, there was nothing divine about a betrayal. Deep inside, she wanted to march up to Devon and tell him that she knew she wouldn't be able to fulfil the needed roles of a Luna in this pack, and that he should let her go, but she couldn't bring herself to suffer another rejection, and definitely not from him.“You underestimate yourself a lot, Kiara” Kali whispered gently and both of Kiara’s brows shot up, “Devon was right, the moon goddess wouldn't have mated you to him if you weren't up to the task.”“Then what about Kristen? What if it had worked out with Kristen, I wouldn't even be here?”While she was still expecting a response from Kali, she felt two fingers on her forehea
“Any reason you can’t keep your eyes off me?” Kiara asked, dragging her eyes away from the restaurant’s interior to meet Devon’s.A corner of his lips tugged up and he shrugged, “What do you think?”Kiara's cheeks turned a deep shade of red and she instantly looked away from him. She had no idea why a simple question like that sent her insides into an overdrive, but she quite liked the feeling.“My turn to ask a question.”“I didn't know we were playing 20 questions.”“We are?” he asked with a feigned ignorance, causing Kiara to roll her eyes. He hid his laugh with a cough, “may I ask my question?”Clicking her tongue, Kiara signed. “You may.”“Thank you,” clearing his throat, Devon adjusted on his seat, “Why did you ask to switch restaurants? Is there anything I should know?”Kiara's mouth instantly ran dry, and
Kiara stared at her reflection again, while her hand smoothened out her outfit.“You look good”“Really good?”Eliza and Amira assured for the 30th time in the past 10 minutes, and she breathed out a laugh. Them saying that to her in unison, reminded her of Tanya and Chloe, and it made her heart hurt. She quickly forced the thoughts out of her mind, she was already nervous as it was for the date, and she couldn’t afford to feel any other negative feelings.“What if the outfit turns out to be the wrong one for where he’s taking me?” I looked back to the mirror and inspected the red gown I had on. It hugged my upper body firmly, but it was free and a bit flowy from the waist down. It was the perfect date outfit, but Kiara couldn’t help the growing pit of anxiety in her stomach. From the mirror, she saw Eliza and Amira exchange a look before they both shook their heads and walked over to her. Placing t
Pain shot through Kiara’s scalp, as the man fisted his hand around the hair and pulled. “Did you think you can escape, you stupid bit-“ the rest of the word didn’t get to leave his mouth before a punch was landed on his nose.“You don’t drag a lady by her hair.” A new voice said, it sounded both feminine and masculine, and Kiara who managed to run to Eliza, looked up to identify her savior, and her brows shot up.The face was soft and angelic, it could easily be a woman, but the person was dressed like a man, they looked like a man but their face betrayed that assumption, so Kiara just looked on as they dealt another punch to her harasser while she nursed her aching scalp.“I’m sorry, are you okay?” Eliza asked after she snapped out of the shock she was in, and Kiara nodded. “We should get going, there’s no point in staying here, things could get worse.”Nodding, Kiara followed her as s
Kiara expected Luka to be her first tutor, hence her shock when she walked out and met Eliza.“Does he pay you enough for being both a teacher and a doctor?”Eliza cracked a smile, “you might have to put in word for me, he doesn’t look it, but he is stingy as hell.”The both of them chuckled and Eliza led them to the car. “We are going to be driving into the pack today, Devon brought it to my attention that you have not been given a proper tour of the pack. After the tour, we’d dive into our first class.”Excitement immediately covered and took away the anxiety that has been boiling at the pit of her belly over the council summon. She has heard a lot of Akira pack, and it was disheartening that she had only been to a potion of it, a very remote potion of it, and her eyes twinkled with excitement at the thought of finally seeing the buzz and fuzz of the pack.“Wow…” Kiara breathed out, almost
Devon sat in silence, reeling in his disbelief. Of everything he expected Kiara’s conversation to be about, sealing their mating bond was the last thing he expected from her.“Are you not going to say anything?” The confidence she built up to bring this conversation on was depilating with every second he was silent.“I, umm…” he rubbed his lips together and adjusted on his seat, “I was just shocked. Go ahead, it seems you have more to say.”“Well, the more I have to say is my condition,” he nodded, urging her to go on and suddenly a wave of nervousness caused her stomach to knot. She couldn’t think of any reason he’d agree to her condition, other than the fact that she was his mate, and she has already learnt that being mates is not always enough reason.“I am going to hear you out, Kiara, and if it is something that I can do, I will definitely do it for you.” He had
Kiara woke up with slight aches all over her body, but she was beyond grateful that the worst was over. At that point last night, when she kissed him, she thought there was no going back, but fortunately there was.Her cheeks turned very warm, and she pressed her palms against it as the memories of the kiss came flooding back. Devon looked hard, his chiseled jaw line, the piercing look in his eyes, his muscles that were always so prominent no matter what he was wearing. He was the definition of hot and tough, but his lips were the sweetest softest thing she has ever nibbled on. Her stomach did a flip as she remembered just how much she enjoyed it.“Get it together, Kiara.” She slapped her cheeks a number of times to get herself in check, but the smile on her face refused to budge, and she held Kali responsible for it. She was the one that jumped Devon’s bones yesterday, and she was the person refusing to stop thinking about it.“It’s not j
Devon’s steps matched the chant in his head - “kill him. Kill him.” - Kaiser’s voice was low as he repeated that phrase, but he meant it. Kristen’s death was going to be on sight. He kicked the door to his room open, then plopped down on his desk, head cradled in his hands. When he asked Kiara earlier if her first mate was the one behind everything; he hoped it was a lie, it was a form of betrayal he hoped that she did not experience, but the tears that slowly slid down the corners of her eyes gave him his response and tore his heart into bits. He ended the conversation after that. He couldn’t bring himself to force her back memory lane and relieve what he knows was the worst moment of her life.Prying open his laptop, he typed in the name of her pack, and the scandal around her was the first thing to pop up, and he grounded his teeth together then reached for his phone.“I want the scandal on Kiara Sorde cleared out bef
Devon was the first to regain control of his wolf, and against his desires, he pulled away from the kiss. Hurt flashed through Kiara’s eyes and she took a step away from him.“Kiara…” he whispered, careful not to touch her, “you know that we can’t do this.”The grayish hue in her eyes disappeared, signaling that she was back in control instead of her wolf, and a relieved sigh left Devon’s lips.“I’m sorry,” her cheeks turned a bright shade of red, and she put as much distance as she could between herself and Devon. He was right, they couldn’t do this, she did not want this, but… she met eyes with him. “What is your reason for not wanting to do this?”She swallowed a lump that formed in her throat as she patiently waited for his response.“You don’t know why we can’t do this?” Kiara pulled her brows together and slowly shook her head
