After being betrayed by her mate and made a rogue, Kiara Sorde is left blinded with a thirst for revenge. Alpha Devon, the leader of Akira pack, with tons of secrets he hides is forced to confront the unusual fact that he was given a mate outside his pack, and has to navigate their newly found relationship while balancing the scale of secrets. Things however don’t go as planned for either of them as Devon isn’t one to be given conditions, and Kiara isn’t one to condone secrets. How will they navigate and balance the intricacies of their relationship as they are led to discover and fight more than they bargained for?
View MoreKiara was all smiles, surrounded by her friends as she looked into the mirror. It was her 19th birthday and the hall downstairs has been decorated in a birthday theme fitting for the daughter of an Alpha, but that was not the only reason she was so excited.
“Are you ready to finally find your mate?”
“How excited are you?!" Two of her friends, Tanya and Chloe asked, and she blushed.
Werewolves found their mates when they both turned 19, which is why dating is strictly forbidden in the community and it made everyone overly excited to finally find their mates, and Kiara was not immune to all that. She had been looking forward to finding her mate for as long as she can remember and today was finally the day. She tried to keep from guessing who it was, but she has been playing guessing games in her mind all day.
“Alright, time to make our bets before she goes down to the hall.” Chloe started and brought out the 50-dollar bill in her bag, “my shot is on Alex, he has been making eyes at her since his 19th birthday.”
“My bet is on Christian; they’ve been friends for a very long time. I’m sure the moon goddess would make them a match.”
Kiara rolled her eyes and stood up, showing her red gorgeous ball gown. She took in her face coated in delicate makeup and smiled. “If you guys are done betting on my future, can we go down now and find out who it is?”
“Yes!” they both chimed at once and opened the door for her to lead the way, and Kiara walked away with the both of them trailing behind her.
She expected to be hit with the scent of her mate and be overpowered by an urge to go meet him like she read about, but there was absolutely nothing like that. She didn’t feel anything different, she felt oddly normal and it sent certain signals up her brain; what if she ends up like the werewolves who never found their mates?
Before she could give in to the thought, her parents appeared before her and pressed kisses against her cheeks. “Happy birthday, Princess, you look absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking.” They chorused even though they already wished her at 12 AM, and a bright grin covered her face.
“Thank you, mummy. Thank you, daddy.”
“I hope you will enjoy your party and at the end of the day, we hope to see you latched onto someone’s arm,” her mum, Luna Camilia said, and her dad interjected almost immediately.
“And if you are not latched to someone’s arm at the end of the night, that is absolutely fine as well sweetheart.”
She rolled her eyes jokingly at her dad. She knew he meant well and was just being over protective, but the mere thought of not finding her mate by the end of the night absolutely terrified her.
She knew some people like Jane, who didn’t find her mate at nineteen, and she had witnessed the life get drained out of her and she does not want to be one of those people. Absolutely not. She has to lead her pack, and she must have her Alpha Consort for everything to be perfect.
“Go and have fun, sweetie. Your friends are all waiting for you.” Kiara snapped out of her thoughts to meet her mum’s smile and bobbed her head swiftly.
The scary thoughts cast birthday blues on her, so she dragged her feet away from them into the crowd that was filled with her friends, acquaintances, schoolmates, and random pack members, who didn’t fail to wish her a happy birthday whenever she waltzed past them, and slowly the the birthday excitement creeped back up.
Every thought of a mate rolled to the back of her mind and she enjoyed every bit of her party. From dancing, to having a few drinks, playing games, singing karaoke horribly, every bit of the activity that went on filled her with joy, but that came to an end when the hall started emptying out and Chloe and Tanya ran up to her, wiggling their brows as they smiled mischievously.
“Soo…” Chloe dragged out
“Found him yet?” Tanya completed, and Kiara’s smile faltered, instantly Chloe and Tanya’s smile vanished. “Are you okay?”
“I haven’t found him,” she tried to keep a brave front and a smile on her face, but the tears pooling in her eyes gave away the pain she was feeling, “I am so scared that I will not find him, I don’t know if….” The rest of her words were drowned out by a strong smell and her eyes widened.
“Oh my god,” she breathed out and before she could fully process it, her legs started moving on its own accord, and her worried friends followed closely behind to make sure she was not about to do something silly.
The closer Kiara got to the backdoor, the stronger the scent got, and she found herself holding onto her gown as she started running. The moment she made it out of the door, the pack’s Gamma’s only son, and one of the most handsome men of the pack, Kristen, stood there with a knowing smile on his face, while Kiara panted as she tried to catch her breath.
“Hello mate,” he whispered, and released his hands that had been tucked behind his back all these whiles to reveal the bouquet of flowers he got for her and a smile so huge it felt like her cheeks were about to burst open.
“You knew,” she breathed out and took calculated short steps towards him, “why did you come so late then?”
“I wanted you to enjoy your day properly,”
Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink and she took the bouquet from him. “Thank you, Kristen.”
“Usually, when mates meet each other there is a long moment of embrace, why have…” Kiara didn’t let him finish his sentence and dramatically flung herself in his arms.
Chloe who had watched everything was grinning from ear to ear, but Tanya looked pale as a ghost, her eyes firmly pressed on Kristen who carefully avoided her gaze.
It’s been a month, a month of living in what feels like a new world. The freedom still came as a shock and most often than not, whenever the Lycans shifted, they still watched their backs.More than half of the arrested ex-alphas had passed away, and the rest of them, including Ketura, were on the brink of death.Everything could categorically be said to be going well, to be good, there was freedom, co-existence, ease, but Devon felt none of that. He wanted to, every time he steps out and sees his people smiling wider than before, he wants to share in it, but the ache in his heart never got lesser. His hands hovered over the door knob and with a deep breath, he twisted and let himself in. As had been his ritual for the past month, he took a seat at the edge of the bed and watched her.He monitored the heaving of her chest, then he grabbed her wrist and counted her pulse quietly. This has been his routine ever since she slumped before she could finish her sentence. Eliza did all she co
The representatives' mouths and that of the pack members hung open as Devon finished telling them the story.“That can’t be true.” One of them whispered, shaking their head adamantly,“I am not going to try and prove anything to you, not with the evidence sitting right in front of you,” He gestured to the alphas, who although were physically present, their minds seemed to be somewhere else. “What I am here to do is to fix everything.”The room immediately grew taut with silence and anticipation. The reps held their breaths as their eyes darted to each other as they tried to guess what it is Devon plans to do. It was unlikely for them to defeat him if he chose to massacre them all to exert revenge for what happened during the war.“No matter how many of you I kill,” he started and they inhaled sharply, “it will not be enough to compensate for what has been done to us, it will never be enough.”“What then…” one of them tried to speak but one look from Devon immediately made him shut his
As he neared the guesthouse, Kaiser began to slow down and the zeal he shared with Devon began to wane. The fear of destroying the shield that has been put in place to protect them suddenly felt like a chain around his limbs.Thoughts and doubts of going and failing began to cloud his judgement. He would put not just himself, but his entire pack and the sacrifices that has been made for years in jeopardy,His run slowly descended into a walk, and he deliberated on taking back his orders and asking everyone to shift back and stay hidden, then he heard the sound of paws hitting the ground in a fierce run and his heart skipped a beat.He could not remember the last time he heard so many paws hitting the ground. Slowly, he turned around and he was hit with the sight of his people running towards him from all directions in their wolf forms, and his breath caught in his throat. He has never seen such a sight before. They were careful not to shift in groups, and even when they did, they neve
Devon and the rest of leadership, including Marcos and Amira sat together, their heads bowed and the exhaustion etched in bones circulated round the room. After Kiara left, Marcos stormed the meeting room with a bunch of warriors that he managed to organize under Ketura’s nose. He had planned it all along, to rescue his brother and his mate no matter what it will take.Luckily, he managed to get Amira and a few others to stop taking the tonic that Ketura was trying to shove down their throats everyday. And that morning, when she least expected it, Marcos knocked her out and had her bound with the help of the hidden witches.Devon was so grateful the second he barged in. After Kiara had left after imprinting that order in his mind, all his attempts to get his legs to move to go after were all futile. It felt like his body had been molded to only obey her command, and the creepy vacant and thoughtless stares of the alphas made things harder. With Marcos’ help, they managed to bundle the
“I fear that if I start asking questions, I will not ask the right ones and you will not give me the right answers,” Kiara started once she and Caelivor were settled in what seems to be his office, “so, I will just make a simple request and hope it gets me what I want.”He smiled softly at her and nodded. “Caelivor, I want you to tell me everything you know about me and the people currently in your courtyard.”Taking a deep breath, Caelivor stared at his hands for a whole minute, then he looked up. “The moon goddess is a very loving and fair god. I have heard tales about the existence of other gods but I think, no, I know the moon goddess is a special one.”“What has that got to do with anything?”“During the war, there was no hope of it stopping anytime soon and with both sides suffering casualties, the moon goddess decided to intervene and that was the first time she allowed herself to be born as one of us. She immersed half of herself into the child in a luna’s womb, and at 18, th
Kiara felt like her heart was being ripped out of her chest and no matter how hard she cried, there seemed to be no improvement on the sadness swallowing her up. It felt like the sadness and troubles of the world rested on her shoulders and was pressing her down to the earth.Unable to keep up with the growing sadness, she felt her vision blur and with all her attempts to keep up, she found herself succumbing to the weight of it and soon enough, she passed out.The next time she opened her eyes, the gaping heavy hole that seemed to grow larger in her heart remained there but this time around, the tears were not forming nor falling and she managed to get off the floor and actually look around the room.It was way bigger than she expected and everything in there was either gold or wood, there was no in-between. The source of lighting was the numerous candles that were lit and positioned at different angles of the room, and the bed that adorned the center of the room was so high and so b
