Chapter 3

Autor: Arya Sue
Julian was so nervous that he could barely speak. His hand shook violently as he handed me the love letter.

The moment I gave him the nod, he looked like he’d stumbled upon a hidden chest of gold.

Thrilled, Julian scooped me up and spun me around.

I trusted that Julian had once loved me with all his heart.

Still, no doubt that version of Julian who loved me was already gone, long before he lost himself.

A loud snap brought me back to reality.

On the screen, blood dripped from young Julian’s hand as he gripped a broken pen.

He stared at one of the clauses and murmured, “In the event of an accidental miscarriage during the marriage, the husband shall be liable for appropriate compensation…

“What’s this supposed to mean, Madison?”

The incident came back to me. It happened around three months ago.

The years of emotional abuse left me with severe depression. I survived on heavy doses of antidepressants just to make it through each day.

When I collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, the doctor told me I was pregnant.

Nevertheless, my long-term dependence on medication had halted the baby’s development.

The nurse tried calling Julian, my emergency contact, to let him know what had happened.

The phone rang for what felt like forever before going straight into voicemail.

Under the doctor’s sympathetic gaze, I was wheeled into surgery alone.

When Julian came to find out, he showed up riddled with guilt, saying that he'd been caught up at work and hadn’t noticed the call.

Teary-eyed, Julian apologized and said he had messed up.

At the time, I no longer cared to guess whether he had actually been working or spending time with Trisha.

Anything related to him no longer mattered to me.

The line went quiet for a bit.

I was about to break the silence, assuming that the connection had dropped.

Young Julian spoke up.

“Madison, is it just the divorce you’re after?

“What if I tell you that I can get you the divorce and make him pay?”

After a long pause, I chuckled.

“Why should I believe you?

“Let’s not forget that you’re the exact same Julian. No one would be happy to throw away their future for someone else.

“Not to mention, you’ve always been a smart guy, Julian.”

Julian let out a wry smile.

“You’re talking about the twenty-seven-year-old Julian.

“The twenty-seven-year-old Julian would use his intelligence to manipulate you and keep you tied to him.

“But the twenty-two-year-old would use that same intelligence to help you.”

“Why?”

“Because I love you, Madison. I can’t bear to see you hurt.”

I was taken aback, finding the irony almost laughable.

At twenty-two, Julian could make a life-altering choice simply because he loved me.

Meanwhile, Julian at twenty-seven forgot what responsibility meant the higher he rose and the more he achieved.

The next day, I showed up at Julian’s firm.

His assistant told me he was away and told me to sit and wait a little.

I shook my head and placed the divorce papers on his desk.

Not every ending needed a goodbye.

Right after I left the agreement, my phone rang.

The call was from the cemetery office.

“Mrs. Lorde? We’re calling to confirm a grave relocation request your husband submitted this morning. Before we proceed, we’d like to verify that you approve moving your father’s remains to a plot on the north side of the cemetery. It's a more secluded area with limited sunlight...”

My mind went blank as a loud ring echoed in my ears.

I bolted out of the firm and hailed a cab frantically.

In the back of the taxi, I tried Julian’s number in a fluster.

By my fiftieth attempt, the call finally connected.

Losing my composure, I rasped out, “Julian, that’s my father’s grave we’re talking about!”

Silence lingered in the air before Julian’s resigned voice came through.

“I know your father means a lot to you, but Trish’s dog just died. It’s a trying moment for her.

“You know what a headache it is when she gets emotional.”

Before I could say anything more, Trisha’s whimpers echoed in the background.

Distracted, Julian uttered in a hurry, “I’ve already had your father’s remains moved to a new plot. It’s just a grave. It doesn’t really matter where he’s buried.”

  • His Redemption Across Time   Chapter 10

When Ryan came by for the third time, he slammed his hand down on the desk. “Julian, what the hell do you want? The firm isn’t going to run on its own. You have employees depending on their paychecks, and you’re holed up here, acting like you’re dead to the world. Who do you think you’re being fair to?” Julian slouched in his seat, his eyes sunken and his chin unshaven. He looked a decade older than his actual age. He smiled, but it was the type that could make anyone’s blood run cold. “Who am I being fair to?” He murmured under his breath, “No one.” By the end of the month, the practice shut its doors. Everything fell apart after that, one domino after another. The law firm declared bankruptcy after its cash flow dried up. With the firm dissolved, Ryan took his share of the office furniture when he left.Julian’s house and car were seized and auctioned off under court order to help satisfy the debts he’d accumulated over the years. He had spent almost a decade buildin

After an exchange of pleasantries, Julian asked the question that was making his palms clammy. The faculty advisor fell silent for several seconds as if shuffling through something on his end before reading off a phone number and an address. “Madison had been through a rough path a few years back, but she’s married now. Her husband is a really grounded, dependable man.” The faculty advisor sounded relieved. “I ran into her downtown last year. She was with her little girl—chubby cheeks, cutest thing you’ve ever seen.”The revelation hit Julian like a ton of bricks. A heavy, dull pain spread from his chest to every inch of his body. She had a daughter. Madison was married. She had a new family—a loving husband and an adorable child of her own. It struck him that they had once had a child, too. The unborn child left the world before getting a chance to know it. Julian suddenly folded in on himself, his forehead pressed tightly against his knees as he curled up into a bal

Julian couldn’t find any notes in Madison’s handwriting. There wasn’t a single photograph of her. Even the pink hairpin she had once left behind was nowhere to be found. It was as if she had been erased from the cracks of time. At last, Julian’s tears broke free, splashing onto the faded pages and bleeding into dark patches of sorrow. Refusing to accept reality, Julian searched the bedroom, the study, and the living room. He opened and slammed every drawer and flipped through each book before dumping them aside. He practically tore the house apart. Finally, buried under a heap of old belongings tossed away at graduation, he found a faded group photo with frayed edges from his school field trip. The photo captured Julian and his friends in front of the carousel, every one of them grinning brightly. Madison stood to his right, with one person between them. She wore a white dress. The breeze ruffled her hair as she turned slightly for the camera. Julian swore the smile on h

“Do you know why Madison loved you so much?” Young Julian’s voice trembled. “She had never been truly loved her whole life. Her mother walked out on her, and she’d already lost the father who worked so hard to raise her. She thought you were her last refuge. Instead, you ended up hurting her more than anyone else ever could.” Julian snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot and his voice broken. “I know… I know… I was going to find her and make it up to—” “Make it up to her?” Young Julian interrupted, his flat settling into an eerie calm—a quiet far more devastating than any outburst. “You can’t fix certain things once they are broken. How do you plan to make it right? By giving her a child you have with another woman or the money you’ve spent years chasing?” Speechless, Julian felt as though everything inside him had been hollowed out.His younger self brushed away a stray tear, then took a deep breath, as if he had finally made up his mind. “So I’ll never follow in your f

“Come out!” “Stop shouting.” A flat, steady voice came from behind Julian.Julian whipped around and saw a younger version of himself hovering in the back. His body was translucent, allowing the objects behind him to show right through. So the figure Julian had glimpsed at the law firm—and the remark—hadn’t been a hallucination after all.“What’s going on? Is this one of Madison’s little games? “What the hell is she trying to pull?” Young Julian observed him in silence, highlighting how utterly unraveled and hysterical present-day Julian had become. After a brief pause, young Julian spoke up. His words echoed the assistant’s back at the firm. “Who is Madison?” Julian snapped. Grabbing a décor piece from the desk, he hurled it straight at the phantom. The item sailed past the boy’s body and crashed into the minimalist lamp behind him. Unfazed, young Julian repeated his query. “Who is Madison?” “Get lost!” Julian growled. “Answer me. Who is Madison?” J

Third-person POVAlready on edge, Julian narrowed his eyes at his assistant in disbelief. “What on earth are you talking about?” Before the assistant had a chance to clarify, the rest of the staff burst into the office in a panic. “This is bad, Mr. Lorde. All the cases we covered up before have been exposed! What do we do now?”“Sir, word got out about the way you made the victims talk. Uh—” “Mr. Lorde…” “Julian…” With questions thrown at him from every corner, Julian’s head was about to explode. Amid the uproar of the office, Julian felt the world spinning. In a daze, he saw a version of himself standing right before his eyes. He looked like the Julian from his college years, looking young and fresh. His younger self looked at Julian and asked in a calm voice, “Is this the future you wanted?” Before Julian could say anything, the silhouette dissolved like mist. It was as though the younger Julian was nothing more than an illusion. Julian braced a hand on th
