Chapter 3

Author: mina
Eight years ago, I met Alvis for the first time at a Christmas party thrown by the Cardini family.

He stood in the crowd in a charcoal suit, and his deep-set eyes and golden hair drew me in.

I walked over with a glass of champagne. "Mr. Sartori, may I introduce myself?"

He glanced down at me and clinked his glass against mine like a gentleman.

We talked all night at that party.

When it was over, he smiled. "Ms. Lauretti, I really enjoyed tonight.

"I look forward to seeing you again."

I smiled and nodded. That night, I knocked on my father's study door and asked him to look into Alvis for me.

With my father's connections, it took him just one day to find out everything there was to know about Alvis.

Alvis was first in line to lead the Sartori family. His mother, Mia, came from an old, distinguished family, and his father, Richard, ran the Sartoris' core businesses.

In business, Alvis was ruthless and hard to read. He never gave anyone an inch.

There was only one complication: his adopted sister seemed to have a crush on him.

Althea's father had been the Sartori family's lawyer. Before he died, he left Althea in their care.

Around that time, Mia had lost her own young daughter, so she took Althea in.

According to the file, Alvis and Althea had grown up together and were very close.

I looked at that page of the report and shrugged.

The Lauretti family was every bit as powerful as the Sartori family. I was my father's only daughter, and he'd raised me to be his heir.

Whatever I wanted, I got. There was nothing I couldn't have.

Why should Althea worry me?

But I soon found out it wasn't that simple.

A few days later, I saw Alvis again at another party.

I went over happily to say hello, but someone else got to him first.

"Alvis, I've been looking for you everywhere."

Althea hooked her arm through his and practically hung off him.

She turned to look at me, openly hostile.

After that, every time I showed up near Alvis, Althea would show up too, right on cue.

She'd cut in whenever Alvis was talking to me.

At parties, she'd accidentally spill red wine on my dress, then apologize with pitiful, teary eyes.

That was when I understood. Althea was in love with Alvis.

And even if Alvis knew, he'd pretend not to notice. After all, she was the sister he'd grown up with.

Later, Alvis and I slowly grew closer.

Althea got jealous of me. To get Alvis's attention, she sold the Sartori family's most important business secrets to a rival faction.

She thought it would make Alvis notice her. Instead, her betrayal cost the Sartori family more than a billion dollars.

The board forced Richard out, and the elders humiliated Mia in front of everyone at a family meeting.

Alvis was stripped of his inheritance and lost everything.

I went to his side without a second thought and helped him.

The day Alvis was fully restored as heir, he got down on one knee and proposed.

He swore he'd love me and protect me forever.

I believed his promise, gave up everything, and married into the Sartori family.

Those first days of our marriage were the happiest of my life.

Alvis would get up early to make me coffee, and on weekends he'd go with me to art exhibits he didn't care about at all.

When anyone in the Sartori family let Althea's name slip, he'd frown in disgust.

I thought I'd never have to see Althea again as long as I lived.

I never imagined what would happen while I was fighting for my life after taking a bullet for Alvis.

At the end of the hallway, he ran into Althea. She said she had cancer, and a few tears and pleas were enough to soften him.

After all, in his heart, Althea would always be the little girl who came to him crying after a nightmare.

But that was no excuse for betraying me.

As the pain from my gunshot wound grew worse, my mind grew clearer.

I'd make them pay for everything they'd done to me.

"No! No way!"Before Henry could say anything, Alvis cut in. "Evelyn, I was wrong. I was so wrong."You can punish me, but you can't take the Sartori family! My grandfather passed it down to us. "I didn't do anything wrong!"All I did was love Alvis! What's wrong with that?"You're the ones who chose to believe me! You're the ones who wanted to get rid of Evelyn so I could marry Alvis..."Before she

Several people got out.I narrowed my eyes. I knew every one of them: the Sartori family's most influential shareholders. What are they doing here?Have they come to back Alvis and settle scores with the Lauretti family?Alvis seemed to think so too. A fawning, respectful smile spread across his face.He turned to one of them, Henry Sartori. "Uncle Henry, what are you doing here?"Henry ignored him. He looked up, saw me, and bowed from where he stood."Ms. Lauretti."He spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear. "There's something I have to tell you in person."He took a file out of his briefcase."This is Althea's complete medical file from the hospital. I had someone look into it. She doesn't have cancer at all."Her records are fake. She bribed a doctor at the hospital to forge them."The smile froze on Alvis's face.He stared in disbelief. "Althea, is that true?"Althea froze. She clearly hadn't expected her secret to come out so soon. She took a step back, her lips trembling."No..

I flew back to New York with my medical team. When the private jet landed at JFK, I looked out the window and saw a motorcade waiting below. My father had arranged for the key members of the Lauretti family in New York to meet me.It was as if my father were announcing that his heir had finally come home, and warning everyone that the Lauretti family was not to be crossed. Before we got off the plane, my mother straightened my collar. "Evelyn, are you sure you want to face this yourself?""Mom, I'm sure."I heard the worry in her voice and gave her a reassuring smile. My father came over, took my hand, and gave me a file."Every deal the Sartori family has made in the past three months. Where their money has gone. A list of all their partners."He said, "Everything you need is in there."I flipped it open. By the time my father carried me out of the hospital, I was in so much pain I was barely conscious.Seeing how badly I was hurt, he ordered his men to arrange a private jet and flew me straight to a hospital in Switzerland.I could hear my father's voice. I wanted to say something, but I didn't even have the strength to open my mouth. All I could feel was his hand on my forehead as he murmured in my ear, "Sleep, sweetheart. You're safe now."When I woke up again, I was in a hospital room I'd never seen before.Snowy Alpine peaks filled the view outside. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warming the room.I moved my fingers, and a nurse came right over. "Ms. Lauretti, thank goodness, you're awake! I'll go get the doctor right now."Soon, a serious-looking, middle-aged man came in with several others. They were the specialists my father had brought in for me.Dr. Lehmann examined my wound and sounded relieved. "Ms. Lauretti, your wound was badly infected. Luckily, y

The door swung wide open.My father walked in, wearing a long black coat. His eyes went straight to me. He strode to my bed, bent down, and pulled me into his arms. "Evelyn."At the sound of his familiar voice, the tears came, and I reached out weakly."Dad!"I buried my face against him like I had as a little girl, letting him feel everything I couldn't say.My father stroked my hair, his voice low. "Dad's here. You don't have to be scared anymore."Behind us, Alvis sounded stunned. "Don Lauretti? What are you doing here?"My father ignored him. Only after gently wiping my tears did he straighten up and look at Alvis."If I didn't come, were you just going to keep pushing my daughter around?""No!"Alvis rushed to deny it. "Don Lauretti, this is just a private family matter!""A family matter?"My father gave a cold laugh and looked at Alvis with contempt. "What kind of family matter leaves my daughter weak in a hospital bed?"What kind of family matter forces my daughter to give up h
