Warmth wrapped her. A solid arm draped over her waist, a steady heartbeat thrummed against her back. The scent of expensive cologne and musk filled her senses.
Catherine’s eyes fluttered open, the unfamiliar ceiling above her bringing reality crashing down like a tidal wave.
Her breath hitched.
‘Last night…’
Heat rushed to her cheeks as flashes of tangled sheets, heated kisses, and whispered words replayed in her mind. Her pulse quickened when she felt the firm grip around her waist tighten slightly, as if the man beside her wasn’t ready to let go.
A mix of emotions churned inside her. Shame. Regret. A lingering, unwanted thrill.
Her fingers curled into the sheets. ‘What have I done?’
A bitter taste coated her tongue. She had become the very thing she despised—someone like her husband. A cheater. A liar. And now a prostitute.
Her throat tightened as she pried his arm off her body, careful not to wake him. The warmth disappeared instantly, replaced by the cold bite of reality.
Slipping out of bed, she moved quickly. The wooden floor was cold beneath her feet as she grabbed her dress and stumbled into the bathroom.
The moment she turned on the shower, icy water cascaded over her skin, making her gasp. She scrubbed her body until her skin burned, as if she could wash away the night’s mistakes. But no matter how hard she tried, the ghost of his touch lingered.
She exhaled shakily. ‘Get a grip, Catherine. He did it first and you are no longer married to him. Stop feeling guilty’
Dressing hurriedly, she cast one last glance at the sleeping man. His face was peaceful, his dark hair tousled from sleep. She felt a strange pull in her chest, but she shoved it away.
She had to leave.
Without a sound, she slipped out of the room, her heels clicking against the marble floor as she ran.
---
Catherine barely remembered how she got home. The moment she stepped into the house she once called hers, she froze.
A heavy silence filled the room, broken only by the ticking of the grandfather clock.
Then—her stomach dropped.
Alexis family.
They were all seated in the spacious living room, their judgmental eyes pinning her in place.
Her mother-in-law’s sharp gaze flickered over her disheveled state before her nose wrinkled. “What is that stench?” she demanded.
Catherine blinked in confusion.
Alex's cousin sneered. “She reeks of a man.”
Panic shot through her veins. “No… no, they can’t know.”
Her husband—no, ex-husband—sat with his arms crossed, a self-satisfied smirk tugging at his lips.
“She finally decided to show up,” Alex drawled. “Tell us, Catherine. Where exactly were you last night?”
His words dripped with mockery, but his eyes held something colder. Something triumphant.
Her hands balled into fists. “I came to pack my things.”
His mother scoffed, standing to her full height. “Pack your things? After abandoning your husband? After whoring around?”
His cousin looked at her with venom in her eyes. “I always didn't like her, I knew something was up with her. Finally, you all can see her bad behavior, sleeping around with different men.”
Catherine flinched as if struck.
“You dare walk in here smelling like another man?” Alex's uncle spat. “And you wonder why your husband replaced you.”
Her chest tightened. Anger flared, fighting against the lump forming in her throat. “Replaced me?” she echoed, her voice shaking.
Alex leaned back lazily. “Of course. I already told my family the truth—you were never a good wife.”
Catherine’s nails dug into her palms. “The truth?” she bit out.
“Yes,” his mother chimed in, her gaze filled with disgust. “You refused to give him children, refused to take care of him like a proper wife. A man has needs, Catherine. And you—” she looked her up and down with disdain “—you were too busy gallivanting to satisfy your husband. You were rebelling against him and making him feel less.”
Catherine’s breath came in short, sharp gasps. The injustice of it all clawed at her throat.
“I sacrificed everything for this marriage!” she snapped, her voice raw with betrayal. “I supported him, took up a different job so that we can have something to eat, I worked alongside him, and what did he do? He used our savings to wed another woman!”
Silence.
Then, Alex's mother scoffed. “Excuses. A marriage without intimacy is bound to fail.”
Catherine’s vision blurred. Her heart pounded, her body trembling with rage.
“You never even asked for my side of the story,” she whispered.
“You’ve said enough,” Alex's cousin interjected. “We don’t need the words of a—”
A sharp slap cut through the tension.
Catherine barely had time to react before Aaron’s mother lifted her hand again, fury blazing in her eyes.
“You will not insult my son in front of me!” she shouted.
Catherine stood frozen, her entire body vibrating with suppressed emotion. Her lips parted, but before she could speak—
A deep, commanding voice sliced through the chaos.
“I’d suggest you rethink that.”
The room fell into stunned silence.
Catherine turned, her breath catching in her throat.
A tall figure leaned against the doorway, his dark eyes scanning the room with cold amusement. He was dressed in a crisp suit, his presence demanding attention.
Her stomach twisted into knots.
No. It can’t be…
Alex's face twisted in shock. “You—”
Catherine’s blood ran cold.
The man from last night.
The stranger who had held her, kissed her, touched her.
And now—
“Your flight was scheduled for tomorrow, you came early, Aaron," Alex's mother greeted him
He didn't answer her.
I turned to look at him, praying he doesn't remember my face. The shame curled like a fist hitting me hard. I swallowed as I tried to act normal.
Her husband’s outcast stepbrother.
Her pulse roared in her ears as panic took hold.
He turned to Alex's mother, his lips curling into a smirk. “I just arrived. Did I miss something?”
Catherine’s heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear anything else.
What was he doing here?
And more importantly—
*Did he know who she was?*
The mail had been sent and they were expecting her to show up already. The place was set for her; she was ready to walk into the place with her head held high and her shoulders were not to be left out. She drove into the place and saw how the building was, she sighed. A feeling of disappointment rushed through her. She wanted something more than what she was seeing there. " I can not believe that that faking is threatened by this little establishment." She shook her head. She stepped out of her car and walked towards the building, the door was opened for her. Her lips parted into a smile. She walked to the receptionist and was highly welcomed. Aaron was waiting for her already, he stood by the door, then he saw her. " Welcome, you are highly welcomed," he said with a smile. She did not return the smile; she walked towards him with a frown on her face. " I thought I was going to be welcomed so well, where are the others? You can not be the only one welcoming me to this place. I
The ground would have to give way to what was coming for it. The shoes were right on point, like something that she had rocked before, but they were new, fitted, and so beautiful on her legs. Her slim legs were perfect; they looked like they had been in many offices, and she was perfect for the role. She looked around the place, hoping that no one noticed her. She came from a rich home, and her father had wanted her to take over the family business, but she turned that down; she wanted a career in fashion, and she was going to have it. She looked around her. Sophia had promised her that she was going to be at the airport to pick her up, and now there was no Sophia in sight. " What the hell? I do not want to be kept waiting; there are better things to do with my life and my time than spend it waiting for someone who is going to show up late; I do not deal with anything lateness," She rolled her eyes. She walked to the other side before she saw Sophia coming towards her. " I am so
They rushed down to the lawyers office this time around. There was an attack on him for the second time. They sat down and listened to his assistant as he could not make it to the office. " I hope he is going to be fine?" Aaron asked his assistant. " He is, he is receiving treatment, and he is going to be fine," he said. Cat nodded her head. She wondered who was behind this treatment, who was doing this to them, and for how long they were going to be in this. " I called you two here because this is no longer safe with me. You both can have it; I am tired of keeping it here with me," he said. " What is that?" Cat asked. " Your trust fund, you do have your marriage certificate right?" " It has been submitted; my secretary handled things yesterday that we got married to; we did not want to waste any time on it," he said. " That sounds better," he said He left the office and came back later with a piece of paper in his hands, the paper was signed and stamped on." I had to do th

She was not going to let what had happened during the wedding determine how she was going to feel. " It's fine, there is nothing to worry about. I'm sure you can remember that I got everything under control before they could realize that their plans were not going to work out" she said. " Interesting, I am never going to forget about this or forgive them, they have to pay for what they tried to do to me. They have to pay for it" he said. " We should talk about this later, but for now, we need to have a good night. It is the night of our wedding, and it should be perfect; I want it so," she giggled beside him. She wanted to have a blast that night. It was all that she had ever wanted. Anything to get her excited and then she leaves the family, but before she leaves the family, she has to make sure that they are all shattered and they must have felt her presence there. A lot of things were going on in her head. She was dressed in red lingerie and had her hands wrapped around Aaron.
They held their breaths as they thought that the worst had happened. Cat knew that they were planning a lot for her and she had to get four rings. She gave out two to the ring bearer, knowing that they were going to take it. She had no idea that they were after her dress, her venue, and even the ring as well. When she saw what they had planned to do with her dress, she knew that the ring was definitely going to be taken. " What are we going to do?" Aaron asked. He was feeling so frustrated. This was not what he had planned; this was not how he had imagined things, even though he knew that things were going to be tough because of his family members who did not want the wedding to go on. But taking his wedding rings was what he considered extreme and they should not have done that. Cat looked at one of the maids, and she brought about her box. The one that was bearing the real rings that they had bought to use. When the priest opened it, there was a ring in it. " We have a ring n
When he told Cat about it, she was so upset with him; she did not want to be at the front of it all, and something else was happening at the back." I do not like what she said, and I am going to be forced to do something," she said. " What do you want to do?" He asked her. " I want to make sure she is surrounded and not allowed to make moves, the same goes for all of your family members. They have to be surrounded, kept at a point, and not allowed to move around," she said. Aaron thought about it for a while before he came to the conclusion that he would let her have her way. " I agree with you. We are not going to allow them to ruin us" he said. " Yeah, I am sorry but your family is not going to get normal treatment from me. This is me trying so hard to protect what I have" she said. " I have no argument about that," he said. All he wanted was to make sure this went smoothly, and he got what he wanted without them ruining the process. " What do you think about this?" She sho
Cat made sure she rushed the activities that were hanging and not taken care of. She knew that she had to sort this out before anyone did. She took the one and began to tick those things that she had taken care of. She did and then it resulted in being in all of it to the end. " Is there something I am forgetting?" She asked the lady who was in charge of things. " No, we have checked everything and we are good," the lady said. The cards were printed out and given to a few people as they did not want the crowd. " What do you think of this?" She showed the card to Aaron. Aaron took it, looked at it, and tossed it on the table. " What do I think? How is this going to help?" He asked her. " What do you mean by that, can you not say that to me? This is going to go a long way" she said. " Why are you printing out cards? The person is going to find out about this and come for me on that day; how on earth did you not think of that?" He said as he palmed his face. " I did not think of
He was scared for himself. He did not want anything to happen to the money his father had left for him. He stood at the window as he kept looking outside, hoping that it was not true. There was no way he could lose all of that. This was the reason he had married Cat. The door opened, revealing Cat. " What are you doing with those things? Are you leaving me?" He asked her. " Why should I? You said you were going to pay me some money, why should I leave when I have not gotten that? I am only moving into this place because I want to be here" she said. She dragged her box into the room. Aaron did not have a problem with that. He felt it was okay for her to move into his room. " Why are you looking so sad? You are not happy that I am moving in?" She asked. " That's not true; I am only worried about the letter that was dropped on your table; it has been troubling me, and I can not get my mind off it," he said. " You can go over and ask them, and not to worry, you will get it soon.
