The sound of glass shattering against the wall ripped through the house. Misty flinched in the bathroom, her hands gripping the porcelain sink so tightly her knuckles whitened. Through the crack in the door she could hear Trent’s voice, ragged and furious, rising over the echo of the broken phone.

“Pick up the damn phone, Dad!” His voice cracked. “Pick up!”

Silence. Then a low, bitter laugh.

“That’s three this week,” he muttered, his footsteps pacing the hardwood. “Three goddamn phones. Might as well start buying them in bulk.”

Misty pressed a towel to her face, her chest tight. She had just told him she was pregnant. He had lit up like it was Christmas morning, and for a second she’d almost believed everything would be fine. But now… now she could feel panic clawing at her ribs.

She turned the shower on, stepping under the hot spray. If she couldn’t calm her head, at least she could scrub herself clean, wash away the sweat of fear clinging to her skin. She stayed in longer than she n

The next morning, the house was heavy with unease. No one spoke above a whisper. Cassie sat at the long kitchen table, untouched coffee cooling in front of her. The silence was oppressive. That was when her phone buzzed. No Caller ID.Her chest tightened. She hesitated, thumb hovering over the screen. Then, cautiously, she answered.“Hello?”The voice on the other end slid into her ear, smooth and unmistakable.“Cassie.”Her breath caught. “Ross.”She didn’t think — she hung up immediately. The phone rang again. No Caller ID.Her heart thudded in her chest. Against her better judgment, she answered, her voice sharp. “What do you want?”“You don’t want to hear what I have to say,” Ross replied, his tone playful, taunting. “But you should.”Her fingers clenched around the phone. “Talk fast before I end the call again.”“I want to make a deal,” he said simply. Her stomach turned. “Goodbye.” She cut the line. The phone lit up again almost instantly. She stared at it, jaw tight, torn betw

Because of the invasion incident, Harris was left in a bad state, but Ross wasn’t as terrible. He had a couple bruises, a few cuts here and there—nothing a bandage and some painkillers couldn’t fix. Still, the sight of him in a hospital gown, hooked to monitors, was enough to make Trent’s jaw smile.Trent had been calling his father endlessly all morning. The first time the call finally picked up, it wasn’t Harris—it was Ross, sitting right next to him at the hospital bed.Trent and Misty rushed to the hospital, burying the tension under the urgency of the moment. By the time they arrived, Harris was awake. They sat down in the room. Trent leaned forward with his elbows on his knees, Misty sat with her ankles crossed, looking like she might faint. Harris’s breathing was shallow but steady. He lifted his bruised hand, the IV taped against the skin, and said hoarsely,“Trent… don’t say anything bad. I understand that what I did was terribly wrong. I shouldn’t have done your mother like

Trent’s voice cracked the walls.“Oh my god! Oh my fucking god!” He paced the living room, hair in his fists, eyes wild. “What the fuck is going on? What the fuck is this shit?!”Misty’s door opened down the hall. She came out clutching her phone, her hand trembling so hard she could barely keep hold of it. Her face was pale, her lip trembling.“Trent…” Her voice was thin. “This cannot be happening.”He whipped toward her. “Don’t—don’t tell me you knew!”“I didn’t!” she cried, her voice breaking. “I just saw it now. I just read it.” She held up her phone like proof, but her hand was shaking too bad to focus.Trent staggered back, pointing at her, pointing at the ceiling, pointing at nothing. His words tangled up in his throat until he finally spat them out.“So what the fuck does that make us, huh?!” His chest rose and fell like he couldn’t breathe. “By default—what—step siblings or something?!”Misty flinched like the words hit her. She shook her head, backing against the wall. “Don’

The room was pitch black, save for a single hanging bulb swaying faintly, casting long, sickly shadows across concrete walls. The stench of iron and mildew clung to the air.The only sound was thwack—thwack—thwack—the dull, wet impact of fists meeting flesh. A muffled groan, then silence. The man slumped forward, head lolling, blood dripping in a steady rhythm onto the floor.A splash. Ice-cold water. The body jerked awake, sputtering, coughing. His swollen eye flicked open just in time for another fist to crash into his jaw. From the darkness, the figure who commanded the room stepped forward. Immaculate suit, tie still knotted perfectly, not a bead of sweat on his brow. His knuckles were red, but his face was composed, almost calm.Randall.He grabbed the man’s chin, forcing his battered face toward the light. “Stay awake. You don’t get to sleep until I’m done with you.” His voice was low, measured, terrifying in its restraint. From the far corner, another sound—retching. A younger

The next morning, two black SUVs idled outside the hotel. Arden’s driver stood by the door, gloves on, waiting. Their bags were already loaded by staff who moved with quiet precision.Cassie climbed into the backseat beside Arden. Warren and Cora followed into the second car behind them. The city slipped past the tinted windows—morning commuters with coffee, cyclists weaving between cars, shopkeepers lifting metal shutters. No one said much. Arden sat with one arm braced against the door, eyes straight ahead. Cassie reached over, resting her hand on his knee. He didn’t move, but after a moment, his fingers covered hers. The convoy pulled straight onto the private side of the airport. Arden’s jet waited on the tarmac, its white body gleaming under the early light. Staff were already in place—one man taking luggage, another confirming details with the pilots.Warren dropped into a seat, whistling. “The only treatment I can get by.”Cora laughed, curling up beside him. “You're too spoile
