Chapter 4

Author: Peachy Leaf
Several coworkers traded knowing looks, but no one answered. They just held her tighter.

"Stay out of it. Mr. Gladwin's dead set on pressing charges against his own father-in-law. Cops'll be here any minute."

Celine's stomach dropped.

'The cops? How the hell did this happen?!'

All she could do was watch as two security guards ripped open her dad's shirt.

She'd bought him that shirt during her first year as a lawyer, skipping meals for two weeks just to afford it.

George treasured that shirt. He only wore it on holidays, special occasions, or important trips into the city.

Even in the heat, he'd buttoned it all the way up, sweat soaking the collar.

Now, the one nice thing he'd put on was ripped apart.

His chest was exposed, and he shook with humiliation.

Still, he forced a smile at Celine. Somehow, it was more heartbreaking than tears.

"Celine... I'm fine. Don't worry.

"There's probably been some misunderstanding with Derrick. We'll clear it up..."

Celine's tears spilled instantly.

Then someone yanked out a diamond necklace and held it up. "Found it! He really did steal it!"

Jenny peeked out from behind Derrick, tear tracks still streaking her face. "Yes! That's mine!"

Her voice turned sugary. "Ricky gave it to me for my birthday. It cost twenty grand!

"I thought it was way too flashy, so I barely wore it. Who knew..."

She snuggled against Derrick, rose on her toes, and planted a loud kiss on his jaw.

"You're such a real one! I seriously thought you'd cover for Celine's father and refuse to believe me."

Derrick slipped an arm around her waist, amusement in his eyes.

"Don't be ridiculous. I believe every word you say.

"And I won't let anyone mess with you."

George crumpled on the floor, his eyes going wide.

His own son-in-law was standing there, holding another woman like she was the one who mattered.

George snapped.

He struggled to his feet and shouted, "Derrick! Did you betray Celine?! Are you... Are you cheating on her?"

"Mr. Clarkson! How could you say that?!" Jenny jerked out of Derrick's arms, her face falling.

"Ricky and I are just friends! Don't make it sound so disgusting!"

The smile vanished from Derrick's face. "George, keep making accusations without proof and you could be looking at a defamation case."

Celine watched her dad shake with anger and humiliation.

She swallowed her own rage. "Dad, calm down. This isn't the time."

Her mouth twisted bitterly. "Those two... don't matter to me anymore."

She turned to Derrick and forced herself to stand tall.

"My dad would never do this. Derrick, you're a lawyer. You know better than anyone that finding something on him doesn't prove he stole it—"

Sirens cut her off.

Two cops walked in and restrained George.

He panicked, tears spilling down his face. "Celine... I didn't steal it!"

Every desperate "I didn't steal it" tore at her heart.

But she couldn't stop this now.

Holding back tears, she said, "Dad, don't be scared. Just cooperate for now.

"Trust me. I'll prove you didn't do it."

Hank held her gaze."Just enjoy the music."George smiled too."Give it a shot, Celine. I want to hear you play."She hesitated, then finally placed her hands on the keys.Sitting at the piano felt strangely familiar. She took a breath and pressed the first key.The second the note rang out, something inside her came alive. The melodies buried in her bones were still there. She was rusty at first, so Hank slowed his accompaniment and matched her pace.Little by little, she caught up.Soon, they were completely in sync. When the piece ended, Celine stayed at the piano, her fingertips still trembling.George was already in tears, clapping hard."That was beautiful, Celine. This is my fault. I held you back all these years..."Hank turned to her, pulled out a handkerchief, and gently wiped her tears."Celine, you're still young. You're only in your twenties. It's not too late."You can return to piano and start a new chapter in your life."This time, I'm here. You don't

Derrick froze. His phone slipped from his hand.He slowly looked out at the blazing summer sun, but all he felt was cold.He had lost more than he could've imagined.Meanwhile, Celine barely recognized her dad when she saw him in the visitation area.In just a few months, the man who'd always stood tall had become painfully thin, his cheekbones sharp against his face.George instinctively reached up to fix his collar, exposing the scabbed marks around his wrists from the cuffs.Celine's eyes burned."Dad..."Choking back a sob, she rushed forward and hugged him tight.Neither of them spoke.Only their muffled sobs filled the room. After a while, George pulled back. His eyes landed on Hank, standing quietly nearby, and his face tightened."Celine, if you were forced to... make some kind of deal because of me, I'd... I'd rather go back to prison!"Celine quickly shook her head."Dad, no! Hank... Hank's a good man!"She paused, her feelings tangled. His kindness almost f

Derrick didn't answer. He walked toward her, one slow step at a time."How else am I supposed to settle the score with you?"He pulled out his phone, thumb hovering over the emergency call button."Breaking and entering. Destruction of property. Serious charges."Sound familiar?"Jenny panicked and grabbed his arm."Don't! Derrick, don't call the cops! I'll clean everything up right now!"Derrick sneered and shook her off."Too late. I'm pressing charges."Then he made the call. When Jenny realized he was actually calling the cops, her face twisted with rage."Derrick! You're just taking your anger out on me because Celine's boyfriend humiliated you. How pathetic!"Seeing Jenny cornered, Fiona jumped in."Calling the cops? Fine! Go ahead!"Then she dropped to the floor."Help! Famous attorney Derrick Gladwin is beating up a helpless old woman!"A vein throbbed in Derrick's temple, but he didn't even look at her.He simply waited. When the cops arrived, he silently pu

The window slowly rolled down.Celine looked at Derrick blocking the car, feeling nothing but tired. She raised a hand, stopping Hank before he could tell the chauffeur to keep going."Don't mess up your car over a lunatic."Then she looked at Derrick."Listen carefully. Even if you dropped dead right in front of me, I'd only think you were disgusting."Stop bothering me. I don't care about this self-serving act."She didn't even wait to see his face go pale. The window rolled back up."Let's go."The engine roared as the car pulled around him.The second it disappeared, Derrick's strength gave out.He dropped to his knees.Caleb walked over and held out a business card."Mr. Gladwin, regarding compensation for your injuries—""Get lost!"Derrick slapped his hand away."I don't need compensation... I owe her. I'm paying her back..."His eyes turned red, and the tears finally fell.He stared down the empty road."But why... why won't she even look at me...?"Caleb s

She knew I was pregnant, and she hit me with her car on purpose."You were there. Celine pulled the legal papers from her briefcase and handed them over. Her voice stayed calm."Derrick, I'm only here to formally notify you."Filing for divorce was my decision. No one pressured or forced me."I hope we can end this peacefully."End this peacefully? The words cut deep.Derrick stepped closer, his voice shaking."Celine, I... I was lied to by Jenny! Now that the truth is out, why can't you give me a chance to make it up to you?!"He grabbed her wrist so hard she frowned."I was tough on your dad's case because Jenny said... she said he harassed her in the lounge and even touched her!"As a lawyer, I was protecting the vulnerable person—and helping you make amends as his daughter!"What was I supposed to do?
