Daisy

"Have we met before?" Victor asked again.

My heart was pounding so hard it hurt. The bond was still burning in my chest like someone had stabbed me and left the knife inside. Damien was holding me up, and I felt his whole body go stiff.

I looked past Victor at the altar. Lucien was standing there with Celeste's nails digging into his arm. His eyes were pitch black and his hands were shaking. If Victor touched me, Lucien would rip his throat out in front of both packs.

And then everyone wo

  • His Regret    chapter 13

Daisy"Have we met before?" Victor asked again. My heart was pounding so hard it hurt. The bond was still burning in my chest like someone had stabbed me and left the knife inside. Damien was holding me up, and I felt his whole body go stiff.I looked past Victor at the altar. Lucien was standing there with Celeste's nails digging into his arm. His eyes were pitch black and his hands were shaking. If Victor touched me, Lucien would rip his throat out in front of both packs. And then everyone would know, and then everyone would die.'Lie,' Nyx begged. 'Lie, Daisy, or we're dead.'"No, Alpha," I said in a tiny voice. "I don't think so."Victor smiled. It was a kind smile, like a grandfather's. It made my skin crawl."Strange," he said. "I never forget a scent. You smell just like Lucien's little stray. The skinny one who used to hide behind his legs. What was her name?" I couldn't breathe. I couldn't say anything."Daisy," someone said.Seraphina pushed through the crowd in her silver

  • His Regret    chapter 12

DaisyLucien moved so fast the air cracked. One second Seraphina was smiling down at her phone. The next, he had it in his fist, and the screen exploded into a hundred glittering pieces. Water splashed across the carpet as her glass hit the floor."Who did you send it to?" he snarled.Seraphina didn't even flinch. She just looked down at the broken phone in his hand and laughed."Relax," she said. "I didn't send anything.""Seraphina.""I didn't. Yet." She folded her arms and looked straight at me. Her eyes were red, like she'd been crying, but her voice was pure ice. "I just wanted to see your face when you thought I did." I stared at her. "Why?""Why?" she repeated. "You're asking me why?"She stepped closer. Lucien moved between us so fast it was almost funny, but she didn't stop. She looked at me over his shoulder like she wanted to claw my eyes out."For ten years, my mother loved you more than me," she said. "Her little stray. Her poor broken bird. Every birthday, every Chri

Daisy"You."One word. That was all he said. Then he moved. I didn't even see him cross the room. One second he was in the doorway, and the next his hands were on my face, my hair, my shoulders, gripping me so hard it hurt. Like he was checking I was real. Like he thought I'd vanish if he let go. His whole body was shaking."Daisy," he said. His voice broke right down the middle. "Daisy. Daisy.""Let go of me."He didn't hear me. He pressed his face into my neck and breathed in so deep his whole chest shuddered. A sound came out of him that I'd never heard from a man before. Something between a growl and a sob."You were here," he said into my skin. "You were here the whole time. In my house. In my bed. And I didn't..."He pulled back and stared at me. At my face, my arms, my hair. His eyes went wide and wild, flicking over every inch of me like he was trying to find the girl he remembered."You're not thin anymore," he whispered. "You're healthy. You're... fuck, Daisy, you're..."I

  • His Regret    chapter 10

DaisyI didn't let him see me break. I put my cup down. I stood up. I pushed my chair in neatly, the way Helena taught me when I was eight and still eating with my hands."Yes, Alpha," I said. Then I walked out of that dining room with my head high and every eye in the room burning into my back.I made it up the stairs. I made it down the hallway. I made it all the way to my bedroom door before my knees gave out and I slid down the wall with my hand over my mouth.'He used us,' Nyx sobbed. 'He used us and threw us away.'Something to use when I'm bored and throw away when I'm done. He told me exactly who he was two years ago. I just didn't listen.I was shoving clothes into my bag when the connecting door opened.Helena stood there clinging to the frame. Her face was grey. Her whole body was trembling. She hadn't walked on her own in months."Mama!" I ran to her and caught her before she fell. "What are you doing? You can't be up!""I heard," she said, panting. "The maids were talki

  • His Regret    chapter 9

Daisy Daisy, my name in his mouth hit me harder than any slap. For one wild second, I thought it was over. I thought he knew. I thought he'd felt it in the way my body fit against his, or tasted it on my skin, or finally smelled it through the last of the pills. I waited for his face to change. For the shock. For the rage, It didn't come. He squeezed his eyes shut like he was in pain. His forehead dropped against mine, and he dragged in a ragged breath. "Fuck," he whispered. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean... I'm sorry." And just like that, I understood, je didn't know. He was lying in bed with a woman named Rose, and he was thinking about someone else, he was thinking about me. I don't know how to explain what that did to me. It was the most beautiful thing and the cruelest thing anyone had ever said to me, all at once. I wanted to laugh. I wanted to scream. I wanted to shove him off the bed and tell him everything, just to watch him break. , "Who's Daisy?" I heard myself askin

  • His Regret    chapter 8

DaisyFor one second, I thought about running. I could make it out the window. I could shift in the garden and be over the border before sunrise. Moonstone taught me how to vanish. I'd done it once already. Then I looked at Damien's face, and I couldn't move."How?" I whispered."Cards," he said. I stared at him."You used to cheat at cards when you were ten. You'd tap your left ear before every bluff." He gave me a tired little smile. "You did it at breakfast when he asked you if you liked the cake. You did it in the hallway when Seraphina asked you who Daisy was. And Helena keeps calling you by your name." I sank down against the door and put my face in my hands. Ten years of training. Two years of hell. And I got caught by a stupid habit I didn't even know I had."Are you going to tell him?" I said. He was quiet for a long time."That depends," he said, "on whether you're planning to leave again."I lifted my head. "Why do you care?""Because last time, it nearly killed him." Da
