Julian’s pov

I felt like I was on a cloud while I laid in the bed. It was better than a cloud. Clouds were just wet and cold. This was… I didn’t have a word for it.

I looked around the room and couldn’t believe this room was given to me. This entire room was bigger than my apartment.

The whole place was. I’d been wandering around for ten minutes just opening doors. A closet bigger than my bathroom. A bathroom with a tub that looked like a miniature swimming pool. And the art… actual statues on pedestals, gleaming under subtle spotlights.

A giggle escaped my lips, high and a little unhinged. This was real. This was actually happening.

All of it. The mountain of medical debt my mom had been drowning under? Gone. Poof. Like magic. The constant, gnawing fear of another eviction notice? History. I was lying in a bed that probably cost more than a car, in a penthouse that belonged on a TV show, and all I had to do was play house for a year with a guy who was, okay, yeah, kind of hot for an

Silas’s pov“It’s okay, Silas,” he said quietly, taking the flask back and taking a sip himself. “It’s gonna happen. You spent the better part of a decade with him. Your brain… it’s looking for patterns. It’s looking for him in places he’s not.” He smiled and leaned forward. “To be honest, Emery would have hated all this moping. He’d have kicked your ass for it by now. He would’ve wanted you to move on. To be happy. However you can manage it.”I looked at him, really looked at him, and… I don’t know how else to describe it but at that moment, he looked human. In that moment he looked like he wasn’t against my marriage.“You think?” I asked. It came out so weak.“I know it. I mean, I’m not just saying it,” he told me. “He was your partner, but he was my friend too. He was a selfish prick in a lot of ways but you know what? He was emery. The best of us. He has his flaws and sometimes he messes up but he would want you to get over his death and stop blaming yourself for what happened.”“

Silas’s povGod. He was… beautiful. All tousled chestnut hair and those wide, green eyes. The slender, artistic build I’d first seen was all toned muscle and graceful lines. My mouth went completely dry. I forced my gaze to stay locked on his face, which was a Herculean effort.“Silas? You okay?” He smiled, a little confused, a little amused.Right. Words. I needed to use words. “I, uh… yeah.” I cleared my throat, my voice coming out rough. “It’s tomorrow. The wedding. I just… wanted to check on you. See if you were… you know. Okay.”His smile softened. “I’m good. A little nervous, I guess. But good.” He came close to me. “Thanks for checking.”I could only smile as I smelled the soap coming off his body. Him being close to me was a bad idea but I didn’t care.I leaned in for a kiss as we started off slowly before I used my right hand to cup his cheek. We kissed for what felt like forever before he chuckled and leaned away from me as I smiled.“You still taste good,” I said as he nodd

Julian’s pov“Look; I’m sorry for how that came out,” he apologized. “I just meant you’re new to all this. The rules are stupid, I know.”“I get it,” I said. ”I’m rough around the edges. It’s true.”“That’s enough,” he said and stopped to look at me. The busy city street flowed around us. “That’s not what I meant. Those people in there… they’re snobs. They judge everyone. I just… I should have stepped in sooner. I’m sorry.”“Whatever. It’s your world. I’m just visiting for a year.”He sighed, a frustrated sound. “Come on. I know a place. Let’s go there instead of the fancy place we were to go.”I shrugged as he took me to a quiet Italian restaurant. The owner greeted Silas by name, clapping him on the shoulder, and didn’t even blink at my t-shirt.We sat in a corner booth. Silas ordered for us in fluid Italian. When the waiter left, he leaned forward.“Look,” he said, his stormy gray eyes serious. “This is going to be hard. There’s a lot of… performance. But you don’t have to become

Julian’s povMiles produced one from his inside pocket. A heavy, silver fountain pen. He held it out to me.My hand shook just a little as I took it. It was cold. I went through the pages again. I didn't know what I was even reading but I had to act like I knew. After a while I sighed and flipped to the last page as i signed.I scrawled my name, Julian Reed, on every line. The nib scratched against the expensive paper. Each scratch felt like a lock clicking shut. The moment I finished, I dropped the pen and sighed.“I’m done,” I said, pushing the document to miles.“Awesome.” Silas said with a smile. “Now. Let’s eat. The trout is exquisite. You’ll love it.”***The food was incredible, which just made everything worse. It was like eating art. Each bite probably cost fifty bucks. I just shoved it in my mouth, not tasting much, while Silas and his lawyer talked in low voices about things I didn’t understand. Stocks. Acquisitions. Things that happened in a world I’d never been part of.

Silas’s povFrom the hotel to my house, it all happened so fast I was sure I didn’t even need to convince him anymore that his mother was safe.I was in my study sitting at my desk while calling my lawyer whom I wanted to draw up the contract. How did I get here? I thought to myself. Just like that. He was in. He was mine. For a year, anyway. We’d already slept together. It just happened. It was good. More than good. He’d looked at me then like I was a person, not a bank account or a headline. Now he was looking at me like I was a monster offering a poisoned apple. But he’d said yes. That was what mattered.I got to my feet and went to the window with the phone to my ears as I looked into the horizon and saw a Julian who was in briefs relaxing at the poop area. He wasn’t in the water or he would get his bandages wet.Miles picked up on the second ring. “Silas. To what do I owe the…”“I need a contract drafted. A marital agreement.” I said it bluntly, my eyes on Julian as I watched him
