             The Republic of the Maldives is an island nation consisting of a collection of atolls (a coral island surrounding a lagoon) in the Indian Ocean. Maldives is located in south-southwest India, about 700 km southwest of Sri Lanka.

          The country has 26 atolls divided into 20 administrative atolls and one city. Maldives is a country with the smallest population and area in Asia. The average land level in the Maldives is one and a half meters above sea level, making it the lowest-lying country in the world. The highest peak of the Maldives is only 2.3 meters above sea level so it is also known as a country that has the highest lowest peak in the world.
