Chapter 2 One Hundred Visits

Author: Muddy
"Jess Clarke."

It's Jasper's surname.

I murmured the name, and something inside me seemed to shatter completely.

The restaurant was still bustling with conversation, but I could not hear a thing.

When I looked up again, Jasper was holding a piece of meat to Jessamine's lips, feeding her.

A wave of nausea surged up my throat. I got to my feet and rushed to the restroom, where I threw up violently.

The mirror reflected my pale face and bloodshot eyes. The makeup I had gotten up early to apply just for Jasper had long since run.

I looked like a clown who could no longer keep pretending.

My hands trembling, I pulled out my phone and opened a chat with my best friend, who was a lawyer.

I hovered over the screen, typing and deleting for a long time before finally sending a single message.

[Jasper's cheating on me. I want a divorce.]

…

When I came out of the restroom, the servers had already cleared away half the dishes.

Jasper and Jessamine were gone, taking the notebook with them.

The envelope containing the abortion consent form was still lying there, unnoticed by anyone.

As I was about to leave, a server hurried after me, carrying a pair of matching coffee mugs.

"Excuse me! Mr. Clarke and Ms. Wells have ordered our couples' special 100 times. We'd like to give them these mugs as a gift, but they left in such a hurry. Could you please pass them along?"

"One hundred times?" I stopped in my tracks.

"Yes. The date of their first visit is engraved on the mugs."

I took them from him, but the moment I glanced at the engraving, I froze.

It was our first wedding anniversary.

I had saved up the half-days Jasper set aside for me over two months, so I could spend a full day revisiting the amusement park where we had gone on our first date.

He had promised to come, but I waited outside the park until dark, and he never showed up.

…

It was not until 3 a.m. that he finally came home, carrying a pot with a young jasmine plant. He said it was a gift for me.

The moment I received the gift, the hurt I had felt seemed to fade away.

Two years had passed. The tiny jasmine plant had grown into a thick, fragrant bush. Every midsummer, the scent of jasmine filled our home.

But only now did I learn the truth.

That day, Jasper had been spending time with another woman. Her name was Jessamine.

I smiled, but the tears would not stop falling.

…

On my way home, I took out my phone and snapped a picture of the matching mugs.

My chat with Jasper was still pinned at the top of my messages, and our last exchange had been three days ago.

I sent him the photo and was about to type a message confronting him when he called me. "Put those mugs away somewhere safe for me. Make sure they don't get damaged!"

I suddenly found the whole thing laughable. "Jasper, don't you think you owe me an explanation?"

There was a brief silence on the other end. Then, a woman called out in a sweet voice in the background. "Jasper, our prenatal class is about to start. Hurry up!"

"Okay, I'm coming!"

Even my already numb heart felt another sharp stab of pain. I took a deep breath. "Jasper, let's get a divorce."

It was Jasper. He had lost a lot of weight. His wrinkled suit hung loosely on him, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes were bloodshot. It was clear he had not been doing well lately."Sam, it's really you. I finally found you!"I kept kneading the pastry dough without responding to him.He stepped forward, his voice choked with emotion. "Sam, I'm here to apologize. Ever since you left without a word, I've been looking for you. I can't eat or sleep. I just want to find you and beg you to give me another chance."Sam, let's forget all the bad things that happened between us. Let's pretend we're meeting for the first time and start over!"I stopped what I was doing and looked up at him, finding his suggestion laughable."Those things really happened. How can you expect me to pretend they never did? Just leave. I don't want to see you anymore. Go be with Jessamine and your child. I hope you finally learn to take responsibility for your family."Jasper's eyes reddened, and he tre

The scenery along the road rushed past as I headed to the airport.I had booked the earliest flight to Brookhaven. Not long after Jasper and I got married, I had eagerly suggested a honeymoon in Brookhaven. I had even put together several pages of detailed travel plans. But just before our departure, while we were in the terminal, Jasper got a phone call and immediately decided to go back.I did not blame him. Instead, I just asked softly, "Is there an emergency?"He glanced back at me, his voice edged with irritation. "Samantha, I've told you I'm busy. Don't get sarcastic with me."I was stunned.I spent the entire day sitting in the terminal as boarding announcements echoed around me. In the end, I went home alone.Years later, I held a ticket to Brookhaven once again. This time, I was traveling alone, but I had never felt so free. The moment the plane landed, warm, humid evening air washed over me, and I felt a warmth I had not experienced in years.I had rented a little

Samantha's POVI did not know how long it was before I finally opened my eyes.Jasper had not left my bedside. His stubble had grown in, dark circles ringed his eyes, and he looked as though he had not slept for days. The moment he saw me wake up, his eyes reddened, and his voice choked with emotion. "Sam, you're awake. Are you feeling any better? I'll get you some water!"I tried to push myself upright, but the dull ache that kept pulsing through my lower abdomen reminded me of everything that had happened. The man standing before me, fussing over me and acting so concerned, was the very man who had caused me all this pain.He brought a cup of warm water to my lips. I did not take it. I simply looked at Jasper in silence."Divorce." That was all I said. His usually steady hands began to tremble, and his voice grew urgent. "Samantha, I'm sorry. I was wrong. So terribly wrong."I don't expect you to forgive me. I just hope you'll stay a little longer instead of leaving me right

It was not until the operating room doors closed and the light above them came on that Jasper finally understood what had happened. He stared at his hands, unable to move for a long time.He could not believe what he had done.Regret and guilt churned in his chest, burning through him until his insides felt as though they were on fire.He could not stop thinking about what would happen if something happened to Samantha. A sickeningly sweet female voice rang out, barely concealing its excitement.Jessamine approached with a hand on her belly and sat right beside Jasper, holding a document. "Guess what I found on your desk? Divorce papers!"Her eyes sparkled with delight. "Jasper, the three of us can finally be together openly! The next morning, everything in the house was still in its place.Only the matching coffee mugs were missing.I was pouring water when my best friend, a lawyer, called."Sam, I just found out that Jasper recently bought a house. The one you always wanted. The property is registered in Jessamine Wells' name!"Hot water suddenly splashed onto the back of my hand, sending a sharp, piercing pain through it.I had viewed that house several times. The first time, Jasper said he was busy and did not come with me.The second time, he showed up but spent the entire visit looking down at his phone without saying a word. The third time, just as we were about to sign the contract, he suddenly changed his mind. He said there was no need to buy the house.I insisted on buying it, so Jasper froze my bank account. All he said was, "You're being too impulsive. Calm down first." Then, he walked away without looking back. So, it was not that buying that house was pointless. I simply was not the

The line went dead. Jasper had already hung up.I turned off the screen and pressed a hand to my increasingly painful lower abdomen, silently closing my eyes. So, this was what happened when heartache became unbearable. No cries. No tears.…That evening, I was packing the things I needed to take to the hospital when Jasper walked in.The worried look on his face eased only when he saw that the matching couples' mugs were intact. When he noticed I was not saying a word, he produced a jasmine flower from behind his back and held it out to me.This time, I did not take it."Samantha, enough already. Stop giving me that look. You know how busy I am. It's not like this is news to you."He rubbed his forehead as if trying to calm an unreasonable child.I kept packing and said quietly, "You've been so busy that you've had a hundred couples' meals with Jessamine, and every Wednesday, she's the only patient you see."Jasper tugged at his collar, a hint of impatience creeping into hi
