Selene’s POV

The chamber was too still. I had been playing against myself for an hour, yet the game of black and white pieces felt less like strategy and more like punishment. Every move reminded me of what I should have been, what I could have taken, if not for Perez.

The fire crackled low. A candle guttered.

That was when the knock came. Too hesitant to be a guard, too eager to be a courtier. I already knew which of my little shadows it would be.

“Enter,” I said, not looking up from the board.

The door creaked open. A servant stepped in — one of my watchers placed in Jude’s halls. His eyes darted like a mouse sniffing for the cat. Good. Let him fear. Fear makes tongues sharp.

“My lady,” he stammered, bowing so low his nose nearly brushed the stone. “I bring… news.”

I let the silence stretch, keeping my gaze on the queen I poised above the board. Then, with a flick of my wrist, I set it down, knocking over the king opposite. The sound rang like judgment.

“Speak,” I murmured.

  • His Straight Pet   Chapter 145

Jude’s POVThe doors of the council chamber loomed high, carved with the Dominion’s crest — fangs interlocked around a bleeding sun. I shoved them open hard enough that the wood cracked against the stone. The room fell silent.Every Lord was already seated at the long crescent table: Dante lounging with false indifference, Akira upright as a blade, Selene poised like a statue of night itself. Their eyes turned toward me as one.Late. Too late. The shadows writhed at my heels, eager, restless, hungry. I tried to pin them down, to leash them inside me, but they had grown restless since the last feeding. Every step I took bled black smoke across the floor.Dante’s lips curved. “Perez. I was beginning to think the shadows had eaten you whole.”Laughter flickered around the chamber. Even a few of the younger Lords, emboldened by the presence of their elders, allowed themselves a smirk.Akira didn’t laugh. His stare was sharp, studying me, calculating.Selene’s voice cut through the murmurs

  • His Straight Pet   Chapter 143

Jude’s POVThe guards flinched when I came down the corridor. Not because of my voice—though it was sharp enough to cut, though I barked at them to move aside. No. It was the shadows. They slithered from me like living blades, rasping against the stone, curling into the sconces and making the torches gutter out one by one. By the time I reached the end of the hall, the only light was me—pale, cracked, drowning in fury.“Open the door.” My voice was a rasp.“My lord,” one guard stammered, “he’s—he’s not to be disturbed without—”The shadows whipped up, and the clang of their armor rang down the passage. I didn’t even touch them. Didn’t need to. The bond had already roused itself, trembling under my ribs, that faint drum of Raymond’s pulse hammering against mine. His fear spilled down the tether before I could even enter.“Open. The. Door.”The younger guard, too slow, too bold, tried again: “Lord Mercier, with respect—”I roared. The shadows slammed the wall above his head, stone fract

  • His Straight Pet   Chapter 142

Jude’s POVThe corridors narrowed as I stalked down them, shadows racing at my heels like hunting hounds. Every torch guttered as I passed, the flame shrinking back into its own smoke. My rage had weight — enough that the stone itself seemed to bow beneath it.Selene.Her name struck like iron in my skull. Xalor’s words wouldn’t let me rest — whispers of her moving her guards where they had no right to be, her shadows dripping into corners of the keep meant only for me. He hadn’t seen her with Raymond, not yet, but I didn’t need proof to know where this road ended.I reached her wing of the keep. The guards crossed their spears. “Lord Perez, Lady Selene is indisposed.”Shadows lashed from me in answer, curling up the hafts of their weapons, snapping splinters from the wood. The air darkened. My voice came low and sharp enough to carve stone.“Move.”The guards hesitated — brave for half a heartbeat — then faltered under the hunger burning in my eyes. Still, one tried again, fumbling t

  • His Straight Pet   Chapter 141

Jude’s POVThe training hall bled with shadows.Steel rang against stone, each strike echoing like thunder across the cavernous chamber. My knuckles were raw, skin split where the hilts had rubbed too long. Blood slicked my grip, but the shadows caught it, licked it, made it vanish as if eager for more.I turned on the next target dummy, swung in a vicious arc, and felt the shadow-blades crack against the wood, splintering it into shards.“Again,” I muttered, dragging breath through my teeth. “Again—”“Or you could try resting, you know,” came a voice from the entry arch. Smooth. Familiar. Irritatingly amused.I stilled mid-swing. The shadows coiled back toward me, curling around my shoulders as if ready to strike whoever dared interrupt. Then I turned.Xalor leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, eyes glinting in the torchlight. He looked too composed, too steady, for someone who’d been cut open in the Culling’s first bout barely a fortnight ago. His uniform jacket hung loose, b

  • His Straight Pet   Chapter 140

Selene’s POVI close my eyes and drink it in, the echo of his hurried steps still clinging to the air like the faint aftertaste of blood. A mortal would call it nothing, an empty hallway abandoned to shadows. But I hear everything—the scrape of his boots against stone, the ragged pace of his breathing, the tremor in his heartbeat as he fled me. Each sound is a note, and together they form a melody sweeter than any song.Fear. Suspicion. Doubt. My lips curl, sharp and unguarded now. The mask drops away with ease, as though it were nothing but a veil tossed aside after a long evening of tiresome courtesies. There is no one to see me now. No one to judge. No one to tell me I am too raw, too ruthless.“Good,” I whisper into the emptiness, my voice low, hungry. “Let him run. Let him think he can escape the words I’ve buried in his chest. He’ll carry them with him like poison.”I turn, pace slowly down the corridor in the opposite direction, each step deliberate, echoing. The flames from th
