Chapter 8

Caleb's POV

I couldn't eat. I sat at the kitchen table with a mug of coffee gone cold in front of me, my phone screen still bright with notifications I hadn't finished reading.

It was eight in the morning. I had been sitting in the same chair for over an hour. The ring was still on the table. I hadn't moved it. I kept glancing at it the way you glance at a wound, knowing it's going to hurt but unable to stop yourself.

I had called Nora six times. Six times, the call went to that smoo

  • His Useless Wife Was A Queen    Nora's POV

Chapter 14Nora's POVChristine Wald was living in Austin.Julian found her within an hour, which meant she hadn't been hiding. She was working as a senior legal consultant for a mid-size private equity firm on the east side of the city. She had a company profile photo on the firm's website. She looked older than I remembered, her dark hair shorter now, but her eyes were the same. Careful. Measured. Always calculating three steps ahead.Julian had also pulled Gerald Holt's board history. He left it on my desk in a thick printed folder with a yellow sticky note on the front that only said: "You'll want to sit down."I didn't sit down. I stood at my desk and read through it standing up, turning pages slowly, and the further I got, the quieter the room became around me.In the four years following my departure, Gerald Holt had quietly restructured two of Hamilton Global's most profitable subsidiary contracts, both of them redirected through a private holding company that, if you traced

Chapter 13Caleb's POVThe interview had been a disaster.I knew it the moment I walked off the set and saw the look on Ava's face. She was standing near the exit doors, her arms crossed, her expression tight and unreadable. She had watched the whole thing on a monitor in the green room. She didn't say anything as I walked up to her, she just turned and walked ahead of me toward the car park, her heels clicking fast and sharp on the tile floor. In the car, she sat on her side of the seat and looked straight ahead."She made me look incompetent," I said."You made yourself look incompetent," Ava said. She wasn't cruel about it, rather she said it the way someone reads a fact off a page. Flat and plain.I didn't argue. I just stared out the window as the city moved past. The clip of the gala had over nine million views by the time I checked my phone that evening. Nine million people had watched me point a spotlight at my wife and call her a burden. Nine million people had watched Tara

  • His Useless Wife Was A Queen    Nora's POV

Chapter 12Nora's POVThat night, I didn't sleep. I lay on top of the covers in the penthouse bedroom, fully dressed, staring at the ceiling while the city hummed quietly fourteen floors below. The message sat in my phone on the nightstand like a small, ticking thing. I hadn't replied, hadn't forwarded it to Julian yet. I just let it sit there while I thought. ‘I know why you really left Hamilton Global eight years ago.’ The truth was, there were very few people alive who knew the full story of why I left. Julian knew part of it. My former attorney knew part of it. But the complete picture—the real reason, the one I had never spoken out loud to anyone, I had kept it buried under eight years of aprons, under grocery lists, and the sound of Caleb's voice telling me I was nothing. I had almost convinced myself it didn't matter anymore. At 6:00 AM I got up, showered, and dressed. By the time Mia wandered out of her bedroom in her pajamas, rubbing her eyes, I was already sitting at the

Chapter 11Nora's POVI watched the interview from the boardroom television with the volume low.Julian had pulled it up on the screen without being asked. He stood beside me, arms folded, saying nothing. Bree had quietly slipped out of the room and closed the door behind her, understanding without being told that this was not a moment for extra people.I watched Caleb on the screen. He was dressed well. Someone had advised him on that, probably Ava. His shirt was pressed, his jaw was cleanly shaved, and he had that expression on his face that I had seen a hundred times across our dinner table. The expression that said, I am the reasonable one here. I am the one being patient.I knew that expression better than he knew himself. I watched him stumble when Dana asked about Mia's teacher. I watched his jaw tighten when she asked about the doctor. I watched him grip the edge of the table when she read the custody documents back to him, line by line, in front of the entire country.I felt

Chapter 10Caleb's POVThe studio lights were hotter than I expected. I had done a few local TV spots before, ribbon cuttings, logistics industry roundtables, the kind of thing where you smile, say a few words about growth and community, and walk away feeling good about yourself. This was different. The set was bigger. The cameras were closer. The woman sitting across from me, a journalist named Dana Reeves with a reputation for asking the kind of questions people wished she wouldn't, was watching me with very still eyes. Her producer had told me the interview would focus on "my side of the story."That was what I needed. My side.Because right now, the whole world was hearing Nora's side, and Nora hadn't even said a single word yet. She was winning the story just by existing. Just by showing up in a charcoal suit and standing in front of a glass tower while the world lost its mind.I had called my lawyer first thing that morning. Then Derek. Then two investors I was hoping to calm d

  • His Useless Wife Was A Queen    Nora's POV

Chapter 9Nora's POVThe boardroom at Hamilton Global was exactly how I remembered it—long, quiet, and commanding. The table was dark glass, polished until you could see your own reflection in it. The chairs were high-backed and charcoal grey, arranged in a perfect row on each side. Floor to ceiling windows filled the far wall, and through them, the city spread out like something I had earned the right to look at.I stood at the head of the table. It felt like coming back to a room I had designed in a dream. There were fourteen people seated around the table, board members, senior directors, and two legal advisors who had flown in from New York the moment the news broke. They were all watching me. Some of them looked relieved and some of them looked nervous. One older man near the end of the table, a board member named Gerald Holt who had always been difficult, looked like he couldn't decide whether to stand or stay seated. I noticed.Julian stood to my right, a closed leather folder
