“Dad?”

Julian’s voice was barely above a whisper.

The man standing in the doorway smiled.

“Yes, son.”

Aria couldn’t move.

Alexander Sterling looked exactly like the photographs she had seen growing up. Silver hair. Sharp features. Expensive black suit.

Alive.

Impossible.

“You’re dead,” Julian said.

Alexander gave a quiet laugh.

“Apparently, I missed my funeral.”

Julian stepped in front of Aria.

“You have ten seconds to explain.”

Alexander’s smile disappeared.

“You always were impatient.”

“You died eighteen years ago.”

“I disappeared eighteen years ago.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

Alexander’s eyes moved past him.

They landed on Aria.

She felt a chill run down her spine.

“So this is her.”

Aria swallowed.

“Who?”

Alexander smiled.

“Your mother’s daughter.”

Julian’s shoulders stiffened.

“You're not coming near her.”

Alexander ignored him.

“I remember you as a little girl.”

Aria stared at him.

“You knew me?”

“Of course.”

“Then you know my mother.”

His expression changed.

For the first time, something like regret crossed his face.

“I knew your mother very well.”

“You married her.”

Alexander looked at Julian.

“Who told you that?”

“Nathaniel.”

Alexander’s eyes immediately moved toward Nathaniel.

“You.”

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“Tell her the truth.”

Alexander laughed.

“You still think you're protecting her?”

“I am.”

“You've done a poor job.”

Aria's patience snapped.

“Enough!”

Everyone turned toward her.

She held up her mother's letter.

“I don't care who lied to me anymore. I want answers.”

Alexander studied her.

“You deserve them.”

“Then start talking.”

Julian glanced at her.

“Aria, don't.”

She turned on him.

“You've been telling me not to trust people all night. Now I'm supposed to trust you?”

Julian went silent.

Aria looked at Alexander.

“Was my mother alive?”

“Yes.”

“Is she still alive?”

Alexander didn't answer.

“Answer me!”

“Yes.”

Aria's knees nearly gave way.

Her mother was alive.

After eighteen years of believing she was dead, the truth was finally standing in front of her.

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Aria stepped closer.

“Why did she leave me?”

Alexander's face hardened.

“Because she believed I would kill you.”

“Would you?”

“No.”

“Then why did she run?”

“Because she was afraid.”

“Of you?”

“Of everyone.”

Aria shook her head.

“That doesn't explain anything.”

Alexander looked at Nathaniel.

“Tell her.”

Nathaniel's face went pale.

“No.”

“You wanted to protect her. Now protect her with the truth.”

Aria turned toward Nathaniel.

“What truth?”

Nathaniel looked down.

Then he slowly raised his eyes.

“Your mother wasn't supposed to leave that night.”

“What night?”

“The night I disappeared.”

Aria's heart pounded.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Nathaniel's voice cracked.

“I saw your mother arguing with Alexander.”

Alexander corrected him.

“She wasn't arguing. She was begging.”

“Begging for what?”

Nathaniel looked at Aria.

“Your life.”

Silence filled the room.

Aria's fingers tightened around the letter.

“Why would my mother have to beg for my life?”

Alexander answered.

“Because someone had decided you were a threat.”

“Who?”

Alexander looked toward Mrs. Rose.

The older woman's face went white.

“Not now,” she whispered.

Aria noticed.

“What does Mrs. Rose know?”

Alexander's expression changed.

“She knows more than she should.”

Mrs. Rose stepped backward.

“Please.”

Julian turned toward her.

“Mrs. Rose, what is he talking about?”

She shook her head.

“I can't.”

Aria grabbed her hand.

“You said my mother left me a message.”

“I know.”

“And you said Nathaniel knew who my real father was.”

Mrs. Rose closed her eyes.

Alexander suddenly said,

“Your mother didn't write that letter.”

Aria froze.

“What?”

“She did.”

“No.”

Aria looked at the paper.

“The handwriting is hers.”

“The handwriting may be hers.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“But the words aren't.”

Aria's heart raced.

“How do you know?”

“Because I know your mother.”

Julian's expression hardened.

“Then who wrote it?”

Alexander didn't answer.

Instead, he looked directly at Nathaniel.

“Tell her.”

Nathaniel swallowed.

“I can't.”

“You're a coward.”

Nathaniel's eyes flashed.

“You weren't there when she needed you.”

Alexander's face became cold.

“I was trying to save her.”

“You left her.”

“I was forced to.”

“By whom?”

Aria stepped between them.

“Stop!”

Her voice shook.

“I don't care about your old arguments. I want to know who my father is.”

The room went silent.

Nathaniel looked at Julian.

Julian looked at Alexander.

Alexander finally spoke.

“Your father is dead.”

Aria's heart sank.

“Who was he?”

Alexander's eyes softened.

“His name was Daniel Bennett.”

Aria stared.

“My father's name is Richard Bennett.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you call Daniel my father?”

Alexander didn't answer.

Aria looked at Mrs. Rose.

The woman was crying.

“Mrs. Rose?”

She covered her face.

“I’m sorry.”

Aria's voice broke.

“What are you sorry for?”

“I should have told you years ago.”

“Tell me now.”

Mrs. Rose lowered her hands.

“Daniel Bennett was your mother's first husband.”

Aria shook her head.

“I don't understand.”

“You weren't Richard Bennett's daughter.”

The words struck her like a physical blow.

“No.”

Mrs. Rose continued.

“Your mother married Richard after Daniel died.”

“Then why did Richard raise me?”

“Because he loved your mother.”

“And me?”

“He loved you too.”

Aria's eyes filled with tears.

“Then why did everyone lie?”

Mrs. Rose looked toward Alexander.

“Because Daniel's death wasn't an accident.”

Julian's face hardened.

“What are you saying?”

Mrs. Rose whispered,

“Daniel was murdered.”

Aria stopped breathing.

“By who?”

Mrs. Rose looked at Alexander.

Then at Julian.

“I don't know.”

Aria shook her head.

“Someone does.”

Alexander's expression remained unreadable.

“Your mother knew who killed Daniel.”

“Who?”

“She found proof.”

“What proof?”

“A financial record.”

Aria frowned.

“What did it show?”

Alexander looked at Julian.

“It showed that someone inside Sterling Holdings had paid for Daniel's murder.”

Julian's eyes widened.

“My company?”

“Your father's company.”

“My father was running it.”

“I know.”

Julian stepped closer.

“You expect me to believe you had nothing to do with it?”

Alexander looked at his son.

“I did not kill Daniel.”

“Then who did?”

Alexander's eyes moved toward Nathaniel.

Nathaniel froze.

“No.”

Aria stared at him.

“Why is he looking at you?”

Nathaniel shook his head.

“I didn't kill him.”

“I didn't ask if you killed him.”

Aria's voice trembled.

“What did you do?”

Nathaniel's face collapsed.

“I was there.”

Aria's heart sank.

“What did you see?”

“I saw Daniel arguing with someone.”

“Who?”

Nathaniel couldn't answer.

“Who, Nathaniel?”

He looked at her.

“Your father.”

Aria stared.

“My father?”

“Richard.”

“No.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Richard was there the night Daniel died.”

Aria's world tilted.

“My father killed my real father?”

“No,” Nathaniel said quickly. “That's not what happened.”

“Then explain it!”

Nathaniel stepped toward her.

“Richard was trying to save him.”

Aria's breathing became ragged.

“From whom?”

Nathaniel looked at Alexander.

Then Julian.

Finally, he whispered,

“From someone inside the Sterling family.”

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Julian immediately reached for Aria.

“Stay here.”

Another crash.

Then a gunshot.

Mrs. Rose screamed.

Julian pulled Aria behind him.

Nathaniel moved toward the door.

“Don't,” Julian ordered.

Another shot echoed through the house.

Then a security guard's voice shouted from downstairs.

“Mr. Sterling!”

Julian's phone rang.

He answered.

“Speak.”

The guard's voice shook.

“Someone broke into the house.”

“Where?”

“Main entrance.”

“Is anyone hurt?”

A pause.

Then—

“We found a body.”

Aria's stomach dropped.

“Who?”

The guard hesitated.

“It's Mrs. Rose's husband.”

Mrs. Rose screamed.

But Julian wasn't listening anymore.

His eyes had locked on the security monitor beside the door.

A figure was walking through the entrance hall.

Tall.

Wearing a dark coat.

Aria stepped closer.

“Who is that?”

Julian's face went pale.

“I don't know.”

The figure slowly turned toward the security camera.

Then removed his hood.

Aria gasped.

She knew that face.

It was Daniel Bennett.

Her real father.

The man everyone had told her had been dead for eighteen years.

And he was looking directly into the camera.

Then the screen went black.
