“Have a seat.” Lucien gestured to Elena. “You showed up faster than I expected given the way you have been avoiding me these past few days.”

She pulled out the chair and sat. “James said you had news about my sister.”

Lucien smiled. As expected she refused to acknowledge what he had just said. She always had her priorities right.

He opened the left drawer of his desk and pulled out a file, sliding it across to her.

She picked it up immediately, flipping through the pages with urgency. He wa

“A shot of tequila, please.” A familiar voice caught Wren’s attention. She looked up to see Vivie, settling on one of the bar stools. She dropped her bag and coat noisily on the counter and leaned against it. Wren returned the credit card to the customer standing before her, then turned to Vivie. “I can see you have fully embraced daytime drinking.” “Save me the lecture and give me a goddamned drink,” Vivie said, rolling her eyes. “I had a long day.” Wren placed a shot of tequila before her. “It’s only eleven in the morning, Vivie.” She shook her head, wiping her hands with a towel. “I doubt you’ve done anything that warrants this tiredness.” Vivie threw back the shot, swallowing it in one gulp. She winced at the burn. “It was a long drive, Wren. Pour me another.” Wren refilled her shot. “How did it go? Did I get the job?” “How’s business these days?” “Don’t change the topic, Vivie. Did I get it?” “Answer my question first.” Vivie ignored her again, downing the secon

As expected she refused to acknowledge what he had just said. She always had her priorities right. He opened the left drawer of his desk and pulled out a file, sliding it across to her. She picked it up immediately, flipping through the pages with urgency. He watched her quietly from across the desk. The way her brows drew together as she studied each page. Her lower lip caught between her teeth. He couldn’t pull his eyes away from her. There was something about watching Elena when she wasn’t aware of being watched. Every emotion she felt moved across her face in real time. She had no idea how much she revealed without saying a single word. “She’s fine.” She finally breathed, the relief washing visibly over her face as she looked up. Lucien quickly d

“Terrible, Elena. Terrible.” Sara’s voice boomed from the phone speaker. “I miss Anne’s cooking so much. I haven’t had a decent meal since I got back.” She sighed sadly. “Then maybe you should come back soon. The house feels empty without you.” Elena chuckled, holding the phone against her ear with her shoulder as she tiptoed to hang a dress on the wardrobe rack. “I’ve been stuck in my room for days with no one to talk to.” “You could go keep Anne company in the kitchen. She’s pretty easy to talk to.” Sara suggested. “I know but I wouldn’t want to interrupt her working hours. We do talk sometimes but it’s mostly about the food she’s served me and how I’m holding up. What else would we really have to discuss?” “You have a point.” Sara said and the line went quiet for a moment. “What about the garden? You could tend to the flowers, take a walk around the estate, feed the carp in the pond. There’s plenty to do to kill the boredom.” “Sara I’ve tried all of that. I spent the whole af

Jason kicked off his shoes, sending them flying in different directions as he stumbled toward his bed. He ripped his shirt open and the coolness of the room caressed his skin as he slumped down onto the mattress. He lay still for several minutes staring at the ceiling. Mateo’s words echoed continuously in his head.Rules are made to trap people like us. You can always bend them to your favour. The more he thought about what Mateo meant the more complicated it became. The words were self explanatory and yet there had to be something hidden in them. A clue he was missing.“Mateo, you can’t just leave me hanging.” Jason had tried to stop him from walking away. “What do you mean? If you have a solution to my problem the least you could do as a good friend is go straight to the point instead of speaking in parables.”Mateo had pushed Jason’s hand off his shoulder. “I’m tired of taking the blame every time I try to help you and it fails. You have to figure this one out yourself. When you do

“Sorry, Jason Dalton. You lost the bet again.” Mateo mocked, moving the stack of cash on the table to his side. “Five losses in a row. Maybe you should quit gambling for a while.”An uproar of laughter and soft giggles filled the room.Jason’s grip tightened around his glass of whiskey as he lifted it. He emptied it in one go and felt the burning sensation at the back of his throat.“Easy, tiger.” A man nudged him lightly. “Don’t be a sore loser.” Another round of laughter followed.“He loses everywhere. Even in bed.” He heard someone whisper behind him. He looked back in anger and saw two women dressed in revealing outfits staring at him as they giggled. He recognized one of them. She was the sex worker he had taken back to his hotel room a few days ago.He shot them a hard look and they got scared and moved away.Jason’s attention returned to the casino table. Another round had begun. He studied it quietly. Even before the dice finished rolling he already knew the winner. And as he

His soft kisses trailed down her bare back and Elena arched into them, eyes closing as she savoured the sensation flooding her body. His hand circled her waist, claiming her completely.“Lucien.” She moaned, lost in the feeling as he slowly entered her. Her hands gripped the sheets tight.“Do you like it?” His deep voice was low and laboured against her ear.Her eyes fluttered open, her lips parting to speak. But instead of words another moan came out. Her eyes fell shut again, her entire focus narrowing to his slow strokes. She was close. She could feel it building.Just as she reached the peak of her release he pulled out.Her eyes flew open and she glared at him.He smirked. “Water.” His voice sounded suddenly distant even though he was right there. “You need water. Wake up.”His voice became an echo.Elena’s eyes flew open to the white ceiling staring back at her. She lay still for a moment, chest rising and falling. Then she turned her head toward the window. It was completely da

"Are you out of your mind, Jason?" Elena shouted, her voice cracking. "End this prank right now. I'm not in the mood for games."Jason reached for her hands, gently caressing them. The relentless clicking shutters and blinding flashes of cameras made Elena's migraine worse. Even the dull ache in her ankle, a reminder of the six-inch heels she wore, wasn't enough to stop her from smiling. She had to. The world was watching, and beside her stood her ex-husband, Jason Dalton.Hi

"Excuse me, ma'am. This area is off limits." A woman's voice stopped Elena in her tracks. She drew in a slow breath, her eyes closing briefly as footsteps approached.“Ma'am." A light touch brushed her shoulder. "Did you hear what I said earlier? No one is permitted on this floor."Elena turned slo
