The Truth About Mia

Elias spent the next two days making calls.

I watched him from the living room of his penthouse, curled up on the leather sofa with a mug of cold coffee in my hands. He stood by the window with his phone pressed to his ear, his voice low and controlled. He spoke to lawyers. Investigators. People I'd never heard of.

I didn't ask questions. I didn't have the energy.

The city stretched out below us, glittering in the afternoon light, indifferent to everything that had happened. People were still going to work. Still laughing. Still living. The world hadn't stopped just because my life had fallen apart.

I thought about my father. He'd called six times since the wedding. I hadn't answered a single one. I didn't know what to say to him. I didn't know how to explain that I'd destroyed everything he'd ever wanted for me the marriage, the reputation, the respectable life.

I thought about Mia.

Every time her name surfaced in my mind, I pushed it back down. I wasn't ready to face it. Not yet.

On the third day, Elias sat down across from me with a folder in his hands.

"We need to talk," he said.

I set down my coffee. "About what?"

"Mia."

I felt my stomach tighten. "What about her?"

Elias opened the folder. Inside were printed emails, bank statements, and a photograph I didn't recognize Mia sitting at a café with a man I'd never seen before. They were leaning close, their heads bent together like conspirators.

"Where did you get this?" I asked.

"I have people," he said. "I've been investigating Mia since the wedding. Something didn't add up."

"What do you mean?"

He slid the photograph across the table. "Do you know this man?"

I studied the picture. He was older, maybe fifty, with dark hair and a sharp jaw. He looked familiar, but I couldn't place him. Something about the way he held himself confident, cold reminded me of someone.

"No," I said. "Who is he?"

"His name is Victor Hale." Elias paused. "He's Damon's business partner."

I looked up. "What?"

"Victor and Damon have been working together for years. They own several properties together. Investments. Joint accounts." Elias's voice was flat. "But three months ago, Victor approached Mia with an offer."

My mouth went dry. "What kind of offer?"

"He paid her fifty thousand dollars to seduce Damon."

The words hit me like a physical blow.

I stared at him. "That's not possible."

"It's very possible." Elias pulled out a bank statement and pointed at a highlighted line. "This is a transfer from one of Victor's shell companies to Mia's personal account. Fifty thousand dollars. Dated three months ago."

I looked at the paper. My hands were shaking.

"Why?" I whispered. "Why would he do that?"

"Because Victor wanted to destroy Damon's engagement to you," Elias said. "He knew that if Damon was caught cheating, you would leave him. And if you left him, Damon would be too distracted to notice what Victor was doing behind his back."

I stared at him, trying to process what he was saying.

"What was Victor doing?"

"Stealing from him." Elias leaned back. "Victor has been embezzling money from their joint accounts for years. Small amounts at first, then larger. He was planning to take everything and disappear. But he needed Damon distracted. He needed someone to destroy his life from the inside."

I thought of Mia.

My best friend. The woman I'd trusted with everything. The woman who'd held my hand at my mother's funeral. The woman who'd laughed with me, cried with me, promised me she'd always be there.

She'd sold me out for fifty thousand dollars.

I felt something break inside me. Not my heart something deeper. Something I hadn't known was still intact.

"She was never my friend," I whispered.

"No," Elias said. "She wasn't."

I pressed my palms against my eyes. I wanted to cry. I wanted to scream. But the tears wouldn't come. I was too empty for tears.

"She knew," I said. "She knew what Victor was doing. She knew he was stealing from Damon. And she helped him anyway."

"Yes."

"She watched me plan my wedding. She helped me choose flowers. She held my hand at the fitting." My voice cracked. "She knew the whole time."

Elias said nothing. There was nothing to say.

I lowered my hands and looked at him. "Does Damon know?"

"About Victor? Not yet. About Mia? He thinks she genuinely fell for him."

I laughed a hollow, bitter sound. "He's an idiot."

"Yes," Elias agreed. "He is."

I looked down at the folder. At the photograph of Mia and Victor. At the bank statement that proved my best friend had been paid to destroy my life.

I made a decision.

"Call Victor," I said. "Set up a meeting."

Elias raised an eyebrow. "What are you going to do?"

I looked up at him. My eyes were dry. My voice was steady.

"I'm going to show him what happens when you try to destroy the wrong woman."

The meeting was set for the following evening.

Elias arranged everything. A private room at a restaurant Victor frequented. A table for two. A hidden camera in a nearby plant.

"We'll record everything," Elias said. "Every word. Every confession. We'll have enough evidence to ruin him."

I nodded. I was calm. Too calm.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" he asked.

I looked at him. "I've never been more sure of anything."

He kissed my forehead. "Then let's end this."

I arrived at the restaurant first.

I wore a black dress. Simple. Elegant. Dangerous. I sat at the table and waited.

The room was dimly lit, all dark wood and candlelight. Soft jazz played from hidden speakers. The kind of place where powerful men made deals and broke lives without anyone noticing.

Victor walked in five minutes later.

He was handsome in a cold way. Dark hair. Grey eyes. A smile that didn't reach his eyes. He walked like a man who owned every room he entered.

"Clara," he said, sitting across from me. "I was surprised to get your call."

"Were you?"

"Your wedding was quite the spectacle." He smiled. "Everyone's talking about it."

I didn't smile back. "I'm sure they are."

He leaned back in his chair, studying me. "So what do you want?"

I looked at him. "I know what you did."

His smile faltered. Just for a second.

"I'm sorry?"

"Mia. Fifty thousand dollars. The embezzlement. All of it."

His face went pale.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said.

I reached into my purse and pulled out a copy of the bank statement. I slid it across the table.

He looked at it. His jaw tightened.

"Where did you get this?" he demanded.

"Does it matter?"

He stared at me. His eyes were cold now. "What do you want?"

I leaned forward. "I want you to leave Damon alone. I want you to return every penny you stole from him. And I want you to leave this city and never come back."

He laughed. It was sharp and cruel.

"And if I don't?"

I smiled. It was the first real smile I'd smiled in days.

"Then I'll release this evidence to the police. To the media. To everyone who matters. And I'll destroy you the way you tried to destroy me."

He stared at me. His face was unreadable.

"You're bluffing," he said.

I stood up. "Try me."

I turned and walked out of the restaurant.

Elias was waiting for me outside.

"How did it go?" he asked.

I looked at him. "He'll come around."

"What if he doesn't?"

I smiled again. "Then I'll bury him."

Elias studied me for a moment. Then he smiled. It was slow and proud.

"You're not the same woman I met at the club," he said.

"No," I agreed. "I'm not."

He took my hand. "Let's go home."

I let him lead me to the car. I let him open the door for me. I let him slide in beside me and wrap his arm around my shoulders.

For the first time in a long time, I felt something like hope.

But hope was a dangerous thing.

And Victor Hale was not a man who let things go.

The baby came three weeks early.I woke up in the middle of the night to a sharp pain in my abdomen. At first, I thought it was nothing. A cramp. A false alarm. But the pain came again. And again. And again.I reached over and shook Elias."Wake up."He stirred. "What's wrong?""The baby. It's coming."He was awake instantly. He threw on clothes. He grabbed the hospital bag we'd packed weeks ago. He helped me to the car. He drove faster than he should have.I gripped the door handle and breathed through the contractions."It's okay," he said. "You're okay. We're almost there."I didn't answer. I couldn't.The hospital was a blur.Nurses. Doctors. Bright lights. Cold hands. Machines that beeped and hummed. Married life was quiet. Not boring. Not predictable. Just... quiet. The kind of quiet I'd never known before. The kind of quiet that felt like peace. We bought a small house on the outskirts of the city. It wasn't a penthouse. It wasn't a mansion. It was a cottage with a white picket fence and a garden full of wildflowers. The kind of house I'd dreamed about as a child.Elias planted roses in the backyard. I painted the walls a soft yellow. We filled the rooms with books and candles and photographs. It was ours.I got a job at a small publishing house downtown. It didn't pay much. It wasn't glamorous. But I loved it. I loved reading manuscripts. I loved working with authors. I loved the smell of paper and ink.I was good at it too.My boss, a woman named Helen, told me I had an eye for stories. She said I understood what made people turn the page.I thought about my own story. The one I'd lived. The one I was still living.Maybe that was why.Elias sold his shares in the family busine

  • His father’s touch   The Wedding

We didn't want a big wedding. The first time I'd walked down the aisle, it had been a spectacle. Hundreds of guests. White flowers. A dress that cost more than my first car. A man I didn't love waiting for me at the altar. This time, I wanted something different. This time, I wanted something real.We chose a small chapel by the sea.It was old and weathered, with white stone walls and a bell tower that hadn't rung in decades. The windows were stained glass, casting colored light across the wooden pews. The only decorations were wildflowers in mason jars and candles in glass holders. It was simple. It was beautiful. It was ours.I invited three people.Mira, the healer's apprentice who'd once brought me salve when I was locked in my cell. She'd reached out after the trial, after everything. The days after the trial were strange.I had spent so long fighting so long surviving that I didn't know how to stop. I woke up each morning expecting another battle. Another threat. Another crisis to solve. But there was nothing. The trial was over. Damon was in prison. His mother was awaiting her own trial in France. Victor was still missing, but the police were confident they would find him. The media had moved on to other scandals, other stories. The war was over.I just didn't know how to live in the peace.I stayed at Elias's penthouse for a week.He didn't push. He didn't ask for anything. He just made sure I ate. Made sure I slept. Made sure I didn't drown in my own thoughts. But I could see the worry in his eyes. The way he watched me. The way he hesitated before he spoke. He was waiting for me to break.I didn't.Not yet.On the seventh day, I woke up before dawn.I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, listening to the sound of Elias's breathing beside me. He was asleep. Peac

  • His father’s touch   The Fallout

The press conference was chaos.I stood at the podium in a small conference room downtown, flanked by Sarah Chen and a publicist I'd hired two days earlier. The room was packed reporters, cameras, photographers, bloggers, everyone who mattered and everyone who didn't. They shouted questions before I even opened my mouth."Ms. Reyes, is it true you were involved with your fiancé's father?""Did you sleep with Elias Blackwood before or after the engagement?""Is it true Damon Blackwood killed your mother?"I raised my hand. The room fell silent."My name is Clara Reyes," I said. "Eleven years ago, my mother, Elara Reyes, died. I was told she died of an illness. I believed that lie for over a decade. Today, I'm here to tell you the truth."I paused."My mother was murdered. She was poisoned. Slowly. Deliberately. By the Blackwood family. And the man who helped cover it up the man who knew what was happening and said nothing was my fiancé, Damon Blackwood."The room erupted.I read the st

  • His father’s touch   The Accusation

Damon was released on bail three days later.I found out from the news. A reporter stood outside the courthouse, microphone in hand, describing how the "disgraced heir" had walked free pending trial. Damon had posted a two million dollar bond. His lawyers had argued he was not a flight risk. The judge had agreed.I watched the footage on my phone, my hands shaking. He was out.He was free. And I knew with a certainty that settled deep in my bones that he would come for me.I called Elias."Did you see?" I asked."I saw.""What do we do?""Nothing. We wait. We watch. We don't give him the satisfaction of reacting.""You think he'll come after us?""I think he's desperate. And desperate men do desperate things."I paused."I'm not going to hide," I said."Clara—""I'm done hiding. I'm done running. I'm done letting him control my life."There was a long silence."What are you going to do?" he asked."I'm going to find him. And I'm going to tell him the truthI found Damon at a bar downt
