“Is he okay?” Alex asked. “Aiden. Is he… does he have friends? Is he doing good in school? Does he…”

“He’s great. Really smart. Reads above his level. Has this whole group of kids he plays with at the park.”

“Favorite food?”

“Chicken nuggets shaped like dinosaurs. Regular nuggets aren’t good enough.”

Alex almost smiled. Almost.

“Does he know about me?”

“Not really. She told him his dad lives far away. That you love him but can’t visit.”

“And he believes that?”

“He’s five. He believes what his mom tells him.” Zara paused. “But he’s starting to ask more questions. Why don’t you call? Why don’t you visit? When can he meet you?”

“What does she say?”

“That it’s complicated. That she’ll explain when he’s older. The usual stuff parents say when they don’t have good answers.”
