“Stop saying that.”

“No.”

“Alex…”

“I’m not gonna stop. You can leave. You can run back to Paris. You can keep Aiden from me. But I won’t give up.”

“You can’t fix this.”

“Watch me.”

Keith came back. Looked between them. “We good here?”

“Fine,” Alicia said. “I was just leaving.”

“Good talk,” Keith said. Not friendly.

Alicia left for real this time.

But her hands were still shaking.

And her chest still hurt.

Alicia walked about two blocks before stopping. He’d mind was reeling with thoughts.

Her heart was doing this weird thing. Racing then stopping then racing again.

“What’s wrong with you Alicia? Why are you being so ridiculous?”

But all she could see was that woman’s hand on his arm. The way she leaned in when she talked. The way Alex smiled at her.

Her phone rang. Zara.

“Where are you?”

“Walking.”

“You sound weird.”

“I’m fine.”

“Did something happen with Alex?”

“No. We talked. That’s it.”

Total lie but whatever.

“Alicia…”

“I gotta go.”

She hung up before Zara could push it.

Alicia got Alex inside and shut the door.He fell onto the couch hard. Like his legs just gave out.She stood there looking at him.“Can’t believe you showed up like this.”“Sorry.”“You’re completely drunk.”“Little bit.”“Alex, it’s three in the morning.”He just nodded. She went to the kitchen. Got water and aspirin. Came back and handed them to him.“Drink.”He did. Spilled some on his shirt. She sat on the coffee table across from him. Close enough their knees touched.“What happened?”“Bad night.”“Yeah, I can see that.”He had blood on his knuckles. She grabbed his hand to look.“How’d you get hurt?”“Don’t know. Climbed a fence maybe.”“A fence?”“I don’t remember anything. I think someone was chasing me?”“Jesus Christ.”She got up and found the first aid kit under the bathroom sink. When she came back she sat next to him on the couch.Started cleaning the cuts on his hands. He didn’t even flinch.“My dad called,” he said.“Yeah?”“Said you’re like my mom. That you’ll ruin ev

Keith leaned back. “You know what your problem is?”“I’m sure you’re about to tell me.”“You think you can control everything. Fix everything. Keep everyone safe from everything. But life doesn’t work like that.”“Thanks for the fortune cookie wisdom.”“I’m serious. That girl—Alicia—she survived five years without you. Raised a kid alone. Built a career. She doesn’t need you to protect her.”“Then what does she need?”“For you to be honest. Stop trying to manage everything and just… be real with her.”“I am being real.”“Are you? Or are you being the version of yourself you think she needs?”He didn’t answer.Keith stood up. “Read the statement. Get some sleep. And maybe talk to her like an actual human being instead of some corporate robot.”“I don’t sound like a corporate robot.”“You absolutely do. It’s actually impressive how emotionally constipated you can be.”“Get out.”She smiled. “There he is. Real emotion. See? Not so hard.”She left.Alex sat there staring at the folder. He

Later, after Aiden was napping and Zara had disappeared somewhere, Alicia went looking for him.She found him in his office. On the phone again. His voice was tight.“I don’t care what she wants. The answer is no.”Pause.“She doesn’t get a say in this.”Pause.“Tell her to back off or I’ll handle it myself.”He hung up. Turned around. Saw Alicia in the doorway.“How long have you been standing there?”“Long enough. Who was that?”“Nobody.”“Alex…”“I said it’s nobody. Just work stuff.”“Don’t lie to me.”“I’m not lying.”“Yes you are. Your jaw does this thing when you lie.”“My jaw does not do a thing.”“It absolutely does.”They stared at each other.“It was Leah,” he finally said. “My stepmother.”“What did she want?”“To tell me I’m making a mistake. That you and Aiden are going to ruin everything.”Alicia felt like she’d been slapped. “And what did you say?”“I told her to back off.”“That’s not what I asked.”“What do you want me to say?”“I want to know if you think she’s right

“Someone has to. And right now, doing nothing is worse.”She wanted to argue. But he had a point.“Fine. But I get to see it first.”“Deal.”After dinner, Aiden crashed hard. All the excitement wore him out.Alicia was tucking him in when he asked, “Mummy, why are those people taking pictures of us?”Her chest tightened. “Because sometimes people are curious about things they don’t understand.”“Are we famous now?”“No, baby. We’re just… complicated.”“What’s complicated mean?”“It means grown-up stuff that doesn’t make sense.”He thought about that. “Is that man from the park—Alex—is he part of the complicated stuff?”She froze. “Why do you ask that?”“Because you look at him funny. Like you’re sad and happy at the same time.”Kids really did see everything.“Yeah, baby. He’s part of it.”“Do you like him?”“It’s complicated.”“There’s that word again.” He yawned. “I think I like him. He has a nice house. And a pool.”“Of course that’s why you like him.”“Also he looks at you the sam

Alicia sat in the passenger seat, watching the buildings in Alex’s estate blur past.Alicia was a rich heiress too yet she had never stayed in such a luxurious house setting.“This is too much.”“It’s secure. That’s all that matters right now.”The car pulled up to the front entrance. Modern architecture. All glass and clean lines. Probably cost more than most people made in a lifetime.Security had already brought Zara and Aiden through the back. They were waiting in the foyer when Alex and Alicia walked in.Aiden’s eyes were huge. “Mummy, this place is like a castle!”“It’s just a house, baby.”“A really big house.” He was already running around, looking at everything. “Can I explore? Please?”“Aiden, we’re guests here…”“Let him,” Alex said. “He can’t break anything important.”“You sure about that?” Zara muttered. But Aiden was already gone, his footsteps echoing through the halls. An older woman appeared from somewhere. Gray hair pulled back, kind eyes. “Mr. George. Should I prep

Alex was in the middle of a conference call when his office door slammed open.Leah walked in like she owned the place. Which, technically, she partly did.“We need to talk.”Alex muted the call. “I’m busy.”“Unmute yourself and tell them the meeting’s over.”“Leah…”“Now, Alexander.”He sighed and unmuted. “Something’s come up. We’ll continue this tomorrow.”He ended the call before anyone could protest.Leah sat in the chair across from him, crossing her legs. She looked immaculate as always. Not a hair out of place. Designer everything.“What do you want?”“I heard an interesting rumor.”“I’m sure you hear lots of those.”“This one involves you and some woman with a child.”His jaw tightened. “Not your business.”“Everything involving this family is my business. Especially when it threatens our reputation.”“How does my personal life threaten anything?”She leaned forward. “You were screaming at some girl in a parking lot. At a company event. It’s all over social media. Do you have
