CARTER.

A FEW YEARS AGO

The evening was warm and the sun was setting. The house felt too big for just me and Catilyn. Mom and Dad were out of town for an event, and I was in charge. The use was quiet except for the faint playlist coming from my sister’s room. Catilyn was humming loudly, off-key as usual while pacing in and out of her room.

I was sitting on the couch, half annoyed by how anxious her energy made me.

“Carter” she called from the top of the staircase. “Can I ask you something?”

I didn’t even look up at first. “If it is about borrowing my grey hoodie again. The answer is-”

“It’s not about your crusty hoodie” she folded her arms dramatically. “I want to go out with the girls. It’s Layla’s house and her parents are home. So it’s safe”

Then I looked up.

She was dressed up in a fitted top and jeans and she was holding a jacket that she definitely stole from my closet.

“How late?” I asked

“Not past eleven. I would be back before then. I promise. Pinky promise” she held up her h

CarterI was completely zoned out of this meeting. It's not like they would listen to any contributions I had to say anyway. I just know I heard words like “moot court funding” and “revisions”. It was just the usual back-and-forth with people who enjoyed hearing themselves speak. Then there was a knock on the door, before it opened slightly.Dean Holloway’s secretary peeped in and he moved closer so she could whisper something to him. This wasn't unusual, but the change in his facial expression told me this was. I sat up in my seat, already anticipating what sort of situation it would be.The secretary then opened the door widely and let two strangers walk in. They were dressed alike, plain shirts, dress pants, and a long time, no suit. The room shifted slightly and conversations died mid-sentence. I looked up and was almost irritated, I wanted to know who they were and why this interruption seemed appropriate.“Professor Carter Vale” one of them asked and my blood went cold. I knew p

ELIMy homework lay half done on the table before me. I could not even finish doing it. Peace and quiet never existed in my home.My mother's voice was calm but still loud enough for me to hear all the way from my room. At the same time, my father’s voice was sharp and accusative.Lizzy appeared in the doorway without knocking. “You hear it too?” she whispered.I nodded.“Uggh” she groaned. “Wrong timing for all this. I have a one-minute video I have to submit for a project. I can't do it with all these” she waved her hands in the air as she walked to my bed.We stayed frozen for a moment, listening to whatever the argument was about. We always did.Just then, there was a loud thud, followed by my mum’s screams.Lizzy looked at me but didn't wait for any reaction before she sprinted out of my room. I followed behind her as she led the way to the kitchen. The kitchen light was too bright and my mother stood near the counter, with one hand braced on it like she needed support. Timothy s

CARTER.I smiled at the files before me, a little victory. Even though it was temporary, it was still real. The first court hearing on the Maybel health facility case had gone well, even better than expected. I leaned back and rubbed a hand over my face.My phone buzzed and it was Dante.“Dante” I answered.“Just checking in” he said, “One more victory left and the Facility case is over”“Yeah. I'm looking at the files right now”“That's what I like to hear. Don't get comfortable yeah”There was a pause, “You sound tired”I glanced at the clock, it wasn't late yet, but the day was far spent. “I have had a long week”“Look, you’re doing a good job and that's all that matters. Try to remember that”“I will. Thanks”A knock came to my door. Then another one. I frowned, I hadn't scheduled anyone for today.“I've got someone at the door.” I said “I’ll call you back”“Anytime” Dante replied and the call ended. The knock came again, but softer. This time, I stood and moved across the office

ELI.“I feel useless,” Maya snorted as she saw me in her doorway. Her room smelled of laundry detergent and vanilla at the same time. She was sitting cross-legged on her bed in a hoodie twice her size. Her nose was still red but she looked better than she had sounded earlier.“I hate being sick”I sat on the edge of her bed. “You're not missing much”“Who said I miss school?” she rolled her eyes.“My bad” I say, shrugging out of my jacket.“Well. Did anything unusual happen?” she poutedI sighed, “Not exactly”She glanced at me, “You're leaving something out”“No I'm not”“Eli”“Fine” I said leaning back on her bed, “Something did happen”“Spill it then”I hesitated for a moment, but she didn't rush me. Then I told her.I told her about running into Liam near the coffee stand. How Liam ‘accidentally’ spilled coffee on me.“That wasn't an accident” she said when I recounted that part.“I know. I wasn't just going to make a scene and give him what he wanted”“Smart decision. It doesn't

CARTERI didn't want to be in this large cubicle but I was here anyway. Holloway sat calmly behind his desk with his glasses perched on his nose as he studied me.“I wouldn't pretend I didn't notice the tone of that meeting because I did” I spoke calmly. He leaned back in his seat, “You mean the curriculum review”“Yes, I mean the curriculum review. And yes I mean the way every suggestion I brought up was dismissed before it could even be discussed.” I kept my tone professional.“There is nothing I can do about perception,” Holloway said at last after being quiet for a minute. “I can't change how members of staff feel about you. You're successful and didn't come up the way they did. That alone brings resentment”“So I'm being punished for existing?” I exclaimed. I hated the way Holloway sat there pretending like he didn't feel the same way they did.His mouth tightened and he gave me a knowing stare, “You're not being punished, you're being watched.”“Same thing” I muttered under my b

ELII woke up to Maya’s text this morning. “I'm sick, it might be food poisoning. Try to stay alive without me”The whole day went slowly, I missed Maya talking my ear off while we walked around campus.By noon, I felt almost normal. I hadn't been reminded of my problems or issues and I hadn't even encountered Carter.I probably jinxed it because minutes later I was met by another Vale family member.“Eli?” I turned stiffly to see Liam of course, standing right next to a coffee cart.He was surrounded by three of his friends. They were all wearing expensive sneakers and arrogant faces.I tried to keep my voice calm, “Hi Liam”Liam looked me over once, before turning to his friends, “Guys” he slapped one of them on the chest “this is the one I told you about”My stomach tightened. I only recognized one of them. The other two must have been new people who thought moving with Liam would increase social status.Liam continued in his mocking tone, “Imagine aiming for your professor. I mean
