LOGINRheya's POV
The little girl fell asleep in my arms in the back of the taxi. Kendra…that’s her name. She had written it down before she dozed off. The car ride was silent, with only the sound of her heavy breathing. Her breathing told a story of exhaustion. And judging from the address she gave me, I’m not surprised.
It really is a long way from the city.
A part of me is glad I found her. God knows how far she was willing to go. Her backpack was heavy. She covered her bases- a toothbrush, toothpaste, a small towel, some lotion, bodywash, a little body spray, a wallet with some money, a notebook, tablet, charger, two extra dresses and some snacks.
Her packing skills are impressive, even I wouldn’t have been able to pack everything so neatly in there. I wonder where she was trying to get to. With each mile, I could tell that we were going to a much quieter area. Traffic reduced until our car was the only one on this long winded road.
We were stopped at a big gate. The guard there wore all black. He wore a bulletproof vest, and I could see his gun in its holster. There was an earphone hanging from his right ear. There was another guard in the little booth behind him.
Whoever lived here was a big deal. Most guards I have seen are well equipped, but seem quite inexperienced. These guards looked like they had seen wars. Their energy was confident, dangerous even. He went to the driver, who quickly informed him that he was only transporting passengers.
I rolled down the window and let him know that I had brought Kendra home. He peaked and saw Kendra sleeping in my arms then spoke to someone through the earphone. After a minute, he told us to get out of the car and let the driver go. After waking Kendra up, we stood outside as the taxi left.
A black limousine came to pick us up. We sat in the car quietly. The scent in the car was like a soft musk, the rare expensive kind. This was the kind of car that would cost a fortune to rent, yet they own it. The mansion was quite far from the gate. A butler stood waiting for us. He had a friendlier face than the guards, but he also carried a nervous energy. His eyes gave a message of their own- “Good luck”.
Seems like I have entered the lions’ den.
Luke’s POV
Kendra entered the living room. She was holding this strange woman’s hand. I barely looked at her. Whatever her story was, I will deal with her later. My biggest concern was seeing if Kendra was alright.
“Kendra, come here,” I called, stretching out my hands to her. I felt her hesitation. She gripped the hand tighter, her face almost panicking. She must be scared that I am angry with her for running away. I am angry, but not at her.
I am mad at the incompetent staff. So many people here but no one noticed her leave.
I tried my best to soften my expression towards her. “It’s okay,” I encouraged. She let go and walked towards me. I hugged and lifted her, my eyes quickly scanning her. She looked fine, no bruises, still clean except for her muddied shoes. This woman who brought her back didn’t hurt her, but I still don’t trust her yet.
“Go upstairs. Let me and your new friend have a little talk,” I instructed. She didn’t move immediately. Instead she looked at the lady who whispered, “Go ahead.”. I don’t like how obedient she is to this stranger. I waited until I was sure that she was out of sight before I fixed my attention on our guest.
“Who are you?”
“Rheya Wilson,”
“How long have you known my daughter?”
“Not long. We met for the first time today outside a cafe. She was being harassed by a strange man. I managed to help her then she gave me her address and here we are,”
I scanned her face. She didn’t show signs of lying. Either she was telling the truth or she is a well trained spy.
“I don’t believe you Rheya,”
Her face turned red and I could see two frown lines on her forehead. She still maintained her composure, but looked offended.
“I said I don’t believe you,” I said sternly, walking towards her.
“Is it a coincidence that my daughter was being harrased as you say, and you just happened to conveniently be there to save her?”
“What do you think happened then?” she retorted.
“I think you planned this whole thing to establish trust with Kendra,”
“Motive?” she asked, her fists balled up, nose flared yet voice still calm. Damn she’s good.
“I haven’t figured it out,” I said as I scanned her outfit. I walked closer to her. I circled around her a few times, still silent. She maintained her composure well. If I wasn’t observant I would have believed the act, yet her hand shook nervously before she grabbed it with the other quickly.
She had a curvy figure. Her dress was a halterneck, tight on the upperbody and flared from the waist down. Her legs were long and glistened. Her heels were simple and her hair was tied up in a bun with strands of hair hanging on the sides of her face.
I lowered my head to her face and calmly spoke to her.
“You save my daughter, show up at my house, seduce and slut yourself out to me. Maybe for the money, or the status, but probably for the secrets. I’m…”
Before I could even utter another word, she delivered a backhand slap to my face.
For a full second, the world went silent.
Nobody slaps me.
Nobody.
Rheya’s POVI was woken up by tiny fingers stroking my hair. Kendra was lying next to me. Her eyes beamed with delight when I smiled back at her. She’s such an adorable girl. I looked around at the unfamiliar room and figured I was probably in one of Mr Raygan’s guest rooms.I only remembered that everything suddenly went black and that Mr Raygan was there. I don’t know why he had come to see me, but it was some sort of divine intervention that he came in just in time to save me. What a mess my life has turned into. My boyfriend went from a loving boyfriend to a narcissistic cheater who tried to force himself on me. My best friend was really no longer my best friend at this point. I need a fresh start and I need protection.“Hi, Kendra. Where’s daddy?”She typed on her tablet ‘in his office’, then jumped off the bed and reached out her hand. I took her hand as she guided me to his study. My heart was pounding. I was nervous about taking him up on his offer. This was the man wh
Hours earlierLuke’s POVI’m on my fifth cup of coffee. My head feels like it’s being hammered. All I want is to wrap work up and go home. The stack of documents on my desk is not getting any lower.I hate the beginning of the year. There is so much auditing to be done. We have to decide if we are renewing contracts with clients and suppliers. Normally the process is a lot faster, but today, I am distracted. My little girl ran away from home yesterday. I have tried my best to give her everything she wants and needs. She has the most professional staff at her beck and call and all the best resources. I would give her anything as long as she wants it. Yet today, I failed to give her someone she really wanted – Rheya. My assistant had brought in the results this morning. She’s clean. The restaurant footage showed the whole scene of Rheya saving Kendra. I am impressed. All the other passersby bought the pickpocket accusation, but she had been adamant that Kendra did not do it. She also m
Recalling the betrayalRheya’s POVIt’s been a little over 24 hours ago since I had surprised my best friend with some flowers and a birthday cake for her birthday. I had it all planned out. We would go to her favorite restaurant for dinner, then go to a bar to celebrate. On the weekend, we would go to the concert that she always wanted to go to. I had worked my butt off buying raffle tickets so many times till I got two tickets. I had also secretly been designing and making her birthday outfit. The level of excitement I had felt sneaking around behind her back to get it done fueled me up so much, it was so hard to not blurt it out. I loved every minute of it. Even my boyfriend, Kevin had been kept in the dark about it because I didn’t want to risk the secret coming out by accident.Cindy and I were childhood best friends. My first sleepover was at her house. She knew me through and through and before yesterday, I could’ve sworn there was nobody knew Cindy better than I did.I was ne
Rheya’s POVI took my phone out to try to order a ride back home. Lord knows what that crazy man will do if I continue to loiter around his home. Stay?Momma told me to stay out of trouble, and that man looks like he’ll send you to hell in a handbasket for crossing him.My phone shut down before I could get a ride. I can’t seem to catch a break.Really? Today of all days!I looked back at the front door and contemplated going to ask Mr Raygan if I could use his phone to make a phone call. Surely he would be kind enough to help send me on my merry way. I walked towards the door. Just as I was about to ring the doorbell, I felt that inexplicable feeling again.Cold shivers.I berated him, slapped him, and rejected his offer all in the span of twelve hours. Needing his help would probably get the wheels turning in his head on how to get even.So option two, it is. I started walking down the path to the gate. The guards probably won’t mind lending me their phones. There’s no way my feet
Rheya’s POVYou could cut the tension in the room with a knife. I am struggling to process the predicament I have landed myself in. Standing across from me is a living legend, the kind that makes grown men pee in their pants upon hearing his name. I have heard tales of him; some I even mocked were exaggerations until I saw the expressions on my uncle’s face while he told me the man was no joke.I want to leave, but Kendra’s gorilla grip is solid. The little girl is strong and scared. She’s just a child – his child.“Let me put her to bed,” I said as I walked toward the staircase. He blocked my way. His eyes looked menacing and determined. Of course, he wanted me gone. Does he think I don’t want to leave? The man just called me a slut!“Kendra’s grip is tight, and she is not letting go,” I whispered. “Either you let me put her to sleep so I can sneak out, or you pull her off me. It’s your call.” I continued. He let out a defeated sigh and stepped aside.I walked up the stairs with
Luke’s POV“You narcissistic braindead piece of shit!” she spat. “Your daughter is brought back to you safe and sound, and you interrogate me? Are you insane?”My jaw tightened. “Do you have any idea who I am?”“You’re the awful father who lost his kid and has the ridiculous gall to blame someone else for it. You could be the president himself – I don’t give a flying damn. Nobody talks to me like that. Least of all for protecting their child.”ProtectingThat word echoed. It hit harder than the slap.“I am not a bad father.”She let out a humorless laugh. “Sure, Kendra has had a long day. She needs a hot bath, a warm meal, and sleep. As for you, take your idiotic assumptions and shove them. I don’t argue with fools.”She turned to leave.Something inside me snapped. Each insult ignited something in me.I caught her wrist before I could think.“Let me go!” she snapped as she bumped into the wall as I towered over her with a cold expression. Her breath came fast. Her eyes were angry, de
