Luke’s POV

“You narcissistic braindead piece of shit!” she spat. “Your daughter is brought back to you safe and sound, and you interrogate me? Are you insane?”

My jaw tightened. “Do you have any idea who I am?”

“You’re the awful father who lost his kid and has the ridiculous gall to blame someone else for it. You could be the president himself – I don’t give a flying damn. Nobody talks to me like that. Least of all for protecting their child.”

Protecting

That word echoed. It hit harder than the slap.

“I am not a bad father.”

She let out a humorless laugh. “Sure, Kendra has had a long day. She needs a hot bath, a warm meal, and sleep. As for you, take your idiotic assumptions and shove them. I don’t argue with fools.”

She turned to leave.

Something inside me snapped. Each insult ignited something in me.

I caught her wrist before I could think.

“Let me go!” she snapped as she bumped into the wall as I towered over her with a cold expression.

Her breath came fast. Her eyes were angry, defiant. They showed no fear.

Instead, they showed something I didn’t expect - challenge.

“You’re not going anywhere,” I said quietly

“Like hell I’m not.”

Her knee connected with me faster than I could react.

I winced in pain as she tried to run. I grabbed her again, momentum sending us both crashing on the floor.

She fell on top of me.

Time froze.

Her hair fell around us like a curtain. Her lips were parted, cheeks flushed, and her breathing heavy. But her eyes…they blazed with a fury, the kind that consumes.

She was breathtaking.

What the hell is wrong with me?

She pushed to get up, but I rolled us over, pinning her wrists gently but firmly above her head.

She writhed and pushed. Her small frame protesting so defiantly.

I leaned close enough to feel the heat of her breath.

A rubber ball hit the side of my head…then another.

I let go of her instantly.

Kendra stood in front of us, her fists clenched.

My heart dropped.

We’d been too loud.

I stretched my arms out for a hug.

She walked past me, straight to Rheya.

Her tiny hands tugged at the hem of her dress.

Rheya picked her up. She clung to her neck with such ease, like she belonged there.

And then Kendra turned to look at me.

Not afraid, but disappointed.

That look cut deep.

Rheya’s fingers threaded gently through her hair, instinctive. Protective.

Kendra hated strangers.

She didn’t cling.

She never trusted.

Yet she held onto this woman like she was oxygen.

This firecracker had done more in a few hours than what expensive specialists had failed to do for years.

I exhaled slowly.

Fucking hell.

She wasn’t just trouble.

She was necessary.

And that made her my new problem.

A dangerous one.

Rheya’s POV

I held Kendra in my arms, rocking her, and threading my fingers through her hair to calm her down. The little girl must be traumatized. I bent to put her down, but she wrapped her legs tightly around me and gripped my neck even tighter.

Come on baby, let me go before your daddy gets angrier!

Luke stared at me and I stared back at him

A tacit understanding between us.

No arguing in front of the child.

Just then the butler came in holding a phone. "Mr Raygan, an important call…”

He stopped midway, noticing the tension. “I will take a message,” he said nervously and skipped back out.

My mind raced trying to process the name I had just heard.

Of all the people I could have messed with, how did I mess with this devil?

He’s the one that scares the demons.

Luke Raygan, BABA YAGA in the flesh, the man who killed five hitmen with a wrench, sitting across from me, his eyes piercing into me.

My heart is beating like a drum from a marching band, but something is wrong with me because why am I more turned on than afraid?

I should be planning my escape, but do I really want to escape?

And would this handsome devil let me… Fuck, why am I objectifying the man that could snap my head off like a twig without breaking a sweat…and for the life of me, why does the outline of him underneath that fabric ignite this feral instinct in me?

Snap out of it, Rheya; you can’t dance with the devil, not this one…no matter how sexy he is.

And the worst part?

He’s staring at me like I’m his to devour

  • His only weakness   The Threshold

Rheya’s POVI was woken up by tiny fingers stroking my hair. Kendra was lying next to me. Her eyes beamed with delight when I smiled back at her. She’s such an adorable girl. I looked around at the unfamiliar room and figured I was probably in one of Mr Raygan’s guest rooms.I only remembered that everything suddenly went black and that Mr Raygan was there. I don’t know why he had come to see me, but it was some sort of divine intervention that he came in just in time to save me. What a mess my life has turned into. My boyfriend went from a loving boyfriend to a narcissistic cheater who tried to force himself on me. My best friend was really no longer my best friend at this point. I need a fresh start and I need protection.“Hi, Kendra. Where’s daddy?”She typed on her tablet ‘in his office’, then jumped off the bed and reached out her hand. I took her hand as she guided me to his study. My heart was pounding. I was nervous about taking him up on his offer. This was the man wh

  • His only weakness   At My Mercy

Hours earlierLuke’s POVI’m on my fifth cup of coffee. My head feels like it’s being hammered. All I want is to wrap work up and go home. The stack of documents on my desk is not getting any lower.I hate the beginning of the year. There is so much auditing to be done. We have to decide if we are renewing contracts with clients and suppliers. Normally the process is a lot faster, but today, I am distracted. My little girl ran away from home yesterday. I have tried my best to give her everything she wants and needs. She has the most professional staff at her beck and call and all the best resources. I would give her anything as long as she wants it. Yet today, I failed to give her someone she really wanted – Rheya. My assistant had brought in the results this morning. She’s clean. The restaurant footage showed the whole scene of Rheya saving Kendra. I am impressed. All the other passersby bought the pickpocket accusation, but she had been adamant that Kendra did not do it. She also m

  • His only weakness   Breaking point

Recalling the betrayalRheya’s POVIt’s been a little over 24 hours ago since I had surprised my best friend with some flowers and a birthday cake for her birthday. I had it all planned out. We would go to her favorite restaurant for dinner, then go to a bar to celebrate. On the weekend, we would go to the concert that she always wanted to go to. I had worked my butt off buying raffle tickets so many times till I got two tickets. I had also secretly been designing and making her birthday outfit. The level of excitement I had felt sneaking around behind her back to get it done fueled me up so much, it was so hard to not blurt it out. I loved every minute of it. Even my boyfriend, Kevin had been kept in the dark about it because I didn’t want to risk the secret coming out by accident.Cindy and I were childhood best friends. My first sleepover was at her house. She knew me through and through and before yesterday, I could’ve sworn there was nobody knew Cindy better than I did.I was ne

  • His only weakness   False Serenity

Rheya’s POVI took my phone out to try to order a ride back home. Lord knows what that crazy man will do if I continue to loiter around his home. Stay?Momma told me to stay out of trouble, and that man looks like he’ll send you to hell in a handbasket for crossing him.My phone shut down before I could get a ride. I can’t seem to catch a break.Really? Today of all days!I looked back at the front door and contemplated going to ask Mr Raygan if I could use his phone to make a phone call. Surely he would be kind enough to help send me on my merry way. I walked towards the door. Just as I was about to ring the doorbell, I felt that inexplicable feeling again.Cold shivers.I berated him, slapped him, and rejected his offer all in the span of twelve hours. Needing his help would probably get the wheels turning in his head on how to get even.So option two, it is. I started walking down the path to the gate. The guards probably won’t mind lending me their phones. There’s no way my feet

  • His only weakness   The Offer

Rheya’s POVYou could cut the tension in the room with a knife. I am struggling to process the predicament I have landed myself in. Standing across from me is a living legend, the kind that makes grown men pee in their pants upon hearing his name. I have heard tales of him; some I even mocked were exaggerations until I saw the expressions on my uncle’s face while he told me the man was no joke.I want to leave, but Kendra’s gorilla grip is solid. The little girl is strong and scared. She’s just a child – his child.“Let me put her to bed,” I said as I walked toward the staircase. He blocked my way. His eyes looked menacing and determined. Of course, he wanted me gone. Does he think I don’t want to leave? The man just called me a slut!“Kendra’s grip is tight, and she is not letting go,” I whispered. “Either you let me put her to sleep so I can sneak out, or you pull her off me. It’s your call.” I continued. He let out a defeated sigh and stepped aside.I walked up the stairs with
