CHAPTER NINE

CALLUM'S POV

“Get a breather, Cal—you ain't doing shit here,” I yelled to my subconscious in the middle of the road, safe inside the car.

But is he always this cute, or am I just seeing things? His lips were so enticing; before I even realized what I was doing, I was leaning in.

Our lips were barely an inch apart. A single mistake and mine would be pressed against his—until a sudden flash of light pulled me back.

“Cal…”

“Cal!”

“Cal, watch the road, please!” He sounded terrified, on the verge of tears.

That was when I snapped my attention back to the windshield and saw a sleek black car blocking the road directly in front of us.

What the heck is this?

Argh! I slammed my hand onto the horn and gestured for the other driver to move, but there was no response.

“Ian, don't worry, there's no problem. Let me go check what's wrong, okay? Just calm down and relax—I'll be right back.”

I popped the door open and stepped toward the front of their car, but the driver zoomed off immediately, leaving me standing in the dark, completely perplexed.

The fading red glow of their taillights swallowed the highway, leaving behind nothing but the quiet hum of my idling engine and the cold night air biting at my skin.

"To hell with them," I muttered under my breath, shaking my head as I slammed my driver’s side door shut.

Inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Ian was practically curled into the passenger seat, his fingers white-knuckled around his seatbelt, his chest heaving with quick, shallow breaths.

"Cal?" his voice trembled, barely louder than a whisper. "Who was that? Why were they stopping us?"

"Just some idiot pulling a stupid prank, Ian," I lied smoothly, forcing my tone to sound far calmer than I felt. My knuckles were still throbbing from where I’d slammed the horn, but I couldn't let him see how rattled I actually was.

"We're fine. Everything's fine."

I shifted into drive and stepped on the gas, wanting nothing more than to put miles between us and whatever that was. But as the tires gripped the pavement, my mind raced back to the moment right before the headlights hit us.

An inch.

I glanced sideways at him. His eyes were wide, glittering under the faint green glow of the dashboard lights, his lips still slightly parted.

The fear in his face made him look impossibly vulnerable, and my chest tightened with a dangerous mix of guilt and desire.

"Are you okay?" I asked softly, reaching across the center console. I hesitated for a fraction of a second before letting my hand rest lightly over his cold, trembling fingers.

Ian swallowed hard, his gaze dropping to where my hand touched his. The shift in his expression was instant—the panic over the black car momentarily displaced by the heavy, unspoken tension lingering between the two of us.

"I thought..." Ian started, his voice cracking slightly before he looked up to meet my eyes.

"Cal, back there... before the lights..."

My heart did a violent flip against my ribs.

"Yeah?" I prompted softly, my eyes flicking down to his mouth for just a split second before snapping back to the dark road ahead. "What about back there?”

“Nothing,” he said, swallowing the lump in his throat.

I could still hear the raw fear lacing his voice, and honestly, I couldn’t blame him. I needed to calm him down first, and taking him back to the library definitely wasn't the right move.

“I'm sorry, dear,” I said softly, easing my foot off the accelerator as we approached the estate gate.

The heavy iron doors swung open automatically, and I glided the car inside as quietly as possible, coasting down the long, tree-lined driveway.

“Master, welcome back!” I heard Elena calling out from across the foyer as soon as I pulled up, but I wasn't in the mood for small talk tonight. I simply motioned for her to open the main door.

She took one look at the tension written across my face—and the trembling mess sitting in my passenger seat—and wisely stepped aside, holding the massive double doors wide open.

“Take him upstairs to the guest room, or yours?” Elena murmured under her breath, her sharp eyes flicking between the two of us.

“Mine,” I replied tightly, not giving her room to argue.

I rounded the car, unbuckled Ian’s seatbelt, and held out a hand. He stared at my palm for a beat, his lower lip quivering slightly, before wrapping his small, cold fingers in mine. He was still shaken to the bone, practically leaning his entire weight against my side as I guided him past the grand staircase and into the quiet comfort of my room.

The moment the heavy bedroom door clicked shut behind us, cutting off the rest of the house, Ian let out a long, ragged exhale.

“Cal…” he whispered, his grip on my hand tightening until his knuckles turned white. “Are we really safe here?”

Before I could open my mouth to reassure him, the quiet hum of my phone broke the silence, vibrating sharply against the wooden nightstand.

Without a word, I flipped the phone face down, cutting off the light, and stepped closer to him.

The darkness of the bedroom enclosed us, thick and heavy with unspoken desire and rising danger. I reached up, my fingers brushing against the soft slope of his jaw, tilting his face up until his gaze was locked onto mine.

The frantic rhythm of his chest began to slow under the warmth of my touch, his lips parting slightly as he leaned into the hand cradling his cheek.

"Look at me, Ian," I murmured, my voice dropping to a rough, low whisper that sent visible shivers through his shoulders. "Nobody touches you in this house. You're with me."

He swallowed hard, his eyes dropping to my mouth before fluttering back up to mine. The sharp fear of the road was fading, replaced by a deep, breathless pulse of tension that pulled us together like gravity.

I slid my hand down to the nape of his neck, pulling him a fraction of an inch closer until I could feel the heat of his breath fluttering against my skin.

For a heartbeat, the world outside—the black car, the strange message, the unseen eyes in the dark—completely vanished. My heart hammered against my ribs, caught in the intoxicating pull of finally closing the distance between us.

Then, high above us in the dark ceiling, the faint, deliberate sound of a floorboard creaked in the attic directly over my head.

CHAPTER EIGHT IAN'S POV "This is..." Cal swallowed, looking up at her with pure appreciation. "This is easily the best thing I've eaten all year."A proud grin broke across Nonnie's face. "See? That's real food. Your grandmother always said I made the best gravy in town, and it looks like she was right. Eat up, both of you.”I sat down quietly opposite him, consuming my food instantly. But the look on his face made me pause—his eyes were fixed on his plate, a mixture of wonder and quiet disbelief softening his usual guarded expression."What? What's wrong?" I asked him, setting my fork down."I thought you said she was strict," he murmured, looking up from his plate with a light, almost emotional smile. "How come she’s so kind and lovely around me? And... if I'm being completely honest, this is the first hearty meal I’ve ever had in my life."I blinked, taking in his tone. "I always thought I'd like to be in your shoes, you know? Multi-course delicacies, planned gourmet meals... I a

CHAPTER SEVEN IAN'S POV It must be nice to be wealthy—completely, effortlessly affluent. Sliding into the plush leather seat of Callum’s sports car made my rusted bicycle feel like a relic from another century. As he accelerated onto the main road, I caught the reflection of a dark, tinted sedan pulling out from the side alley behind us, matching our speed second for second."Hey, Cal?" I asked softly, peering through the side mirror. Vehicles like that were a rare sight in this poverty-stricken area. "Is it normal for a black SUV to follow you every time you leave your house?"He checked the rearview mirror, his hands tightening on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned pale. "What the heck is the old man pulling again?" he muttered, his voice laced with sudden anger.I shrank back into my seat, the easy banter we’d shared back at the house evaporating in an instant. The shadow of his powerful family had just caught up to us, and for the first time, I realized that being in C
