Chapter 9 On the Brink

I was not surprised. The Sampsons had enough influence to smooth this over without a hitch.

The treatment went well. George regained his clarity of mind. The death of his wife and his daughter's true colors hit him hard. He no longer took her side. Instead, he was reflecting on himself and how his family had brought up their daughter.

Then, he summoned me to the hospital. Earnestly, he told me, "I know it's been hell for you, my boy. Wendy failed you. She betrayed you, and that means I failed as a father."

He sighed, his eyes filled with guilt. "I've given it a long and hard thought. I think you should divorce her. It's what's best for both of you."

That was surprising. I wasn't expecting George to say that. I thought he would tell me to keep tolerating his daughter's behavior. I thought he would ask me to keep up appearances for his family's reputation.
