Chapter 1 Heartless Daughter

Penulis: Hammer King
She hung up, and the ER's doors swung open. The doctor pulled his mask down, and the look on his face told me things were not going well. Then, he handed me a notice. Critical illness.

My heart sank.

The nurse approached me and gently reminded me to pay for George's bill. Of course. Zack Gosling pushed him down. Now George was in a ward. I took my wallet out. Just when I was going to pay the bill, they told me my balance was insufficient.

I tried all my other cards, but they were all frozen. Wendy. Who else but her could do this? Furious, I called her again, but it took me three tries just for it to get through.

"Are you out of your mind? Why'd you freeze my cards? Your parents are in the hospital, and they need the money! Their lives are on the line!"

Wendy's answer came colder than winter winds. "This is a lesson, Felix Shaw. We had a deal. Never bring your poor fishermen parents to my house. You broke the agreement."

"This is your own mother we're talking about! Unfreeze the cards! Lives depend on them!" I roared. The fury in my soul was erupting like a volcano threatening to devour an island whole."

She sneered. "I knew it. You married me for my money. You'd make up stories just to get my money. Don't even think about it. Count yourself lucky I'm even supporting you."

"You're unbelievable! Your mother's critical! The doctor's given us the notice! Get over here and see for yourself. It's probably going to be the last time you'll see your mom."

A moment of silence ensued. When she spoke again, Wendy's voice carried hesitation in it. Just when I thought she would change her mind, I heard Zack's voice.

"No way they're your parents, Wendy. I mean, they were wearing tatters. Also, you told me they went vacationing in Altya, remember? Even if it's true that they're your parents, one of them isn't ill. How about you talk to him? You'll see if he's your dad."

That gave her blind confidence. She said, "I'm not going to the hospital. If they're really my parents, get my dad to talk to me."

I massaged my forehead. This was hopeless. I was starting to feel helpless. George fainted the moment the doctor showed us the notice. He was still in bed and unconscious. So I was supposed to wake him up and prove that he was his daughter's dad?

Well, I had no choice. "Give me a minute. He fainted from shock. I'll wake him up."

I approached the bed. George was pale, and his lips were trembling. All he could make out were vague, indistinct sounds.

The doctor came up to me. "Excessive shock. He's down with a mild stroke, but he'll be fine. Just give it a few days."

Well, nothing I could do. I said, "Your dad can't even talk. He had a stroke."

George was lying in his bed. He could only watch as the empire he built slowly crumbled under his daughter's management. There was nothing he could do.When I showed up, his murky eyes lit up, though not by much. Then, he held my hands. "I'm happy you made it, my boy." His voice was barely more than a whisper, and it was trembling. The man was little more than skin and bones. The sight made me tear up. "I'll get the best doctors money can buy, George. Don't give up yet."He shook his head in resignation and turned to the corner. Wendy was curled up there. He sighed and told his lawyer to announce his last will and testament. The lawyer honored his wish and announced George's final decision in his life. He gave me most of the assets, including the crumbling Sampson Group. Wendy was only left with a house."What? But I'm his daughter!" Wendy screeched, and her sallow face was etched with disbelief. She darted toward the bed and grabbed George's hand. The woman shook her dying father

I was not surprised. The Sampsons had enough influence to smooth this over without a hitch. The treatment went well. George regained his clarity of mind. The death of his wife and his daughter's true colors hit him hard. He no longer took her side. Instead, he was reflecting on himself and how his family had brought up their daughter. Then, he summoned me to the hospital. Earnestly, he told me, "I know it's been hell for you, my boy. Wendy failed you. She betrayed you, and that means I failed as a father."He sighed, his eyes filled with guilt. "I've given it a long and hard thought. I think you should divorce her. It's what's best for both of you."That was surprising. I wasn't expecting George to say that. I thought he would tell me to keep tolerating his daughter's behavior. I thought he would ask me to keep up appearances for his family's reputation."George…" I trailed off. I had no idea what to say."I know you've suffered. You should cut your losses while you can." He patt

Eventually, love bloomed between us, and we became a couple. During our second year, she told me who she really was. She was the heiress to Sampson Group. The guilt of keeping a secret weighed down on her. She hugged me and begged that I forgive her for doing this. She was so scared.I smiled and told her it was fine. I was going to tell her who I really was, but I never got the chance. She dragged me to city hall and got our marriage license.I was going to tell her the truth during our wedding. I was going to tell her I was the heir to a big family. But my family went bankrupt not too long after we got the license. I needed money desperately. When she was happily preparing for the wedding, I steeled my resolve and asked, "Can we skip the wedding? I need three million, but I promise I'll pay you back next month."The smile on her face froze up. "What do you mean?"I told her my family's company was in trouble, and they needed funds to work with. She thought I duped her into a re

"Wendy loves me. This isn't over—"Wendy gave her answer right away, and it was a big, fat slap across Zack's face. "Don't listen to him, Felix. I don't like guys like him. He's just a toy. A toy I throw away once I'm bored of him."She held up her thermos and uncapped it. The air was filled with the aroma of mushroom and egg custard. "You must be hungry. I got this for you."I turned around, my eyes gazing upon the overcast sky outside. Calmly, I said, "Do you know why I took your parents to your place?"Wendy froze. She was not expecting that question."They missed you. They wanted to see their daughter for Christmas. They thought they would have a happy reunion, but instead, their family got ripped apart. And all this because of your new lover. They're disappointed in you. So am I. I'll get the papers ready as soon as I can."Her eyes turned red, and tears welled up. "I failed my parents. I failed you, Felix. I swear I won't bring any more men home. I'll stop this kind of life

Wendy went on a tirade, "I can't believe you left a patient in the corridor! It's winter, for God's sake! What if something happened to him?"I pulled her back and kept her out of the doctor's way. And I mocked, "Hey, at least they didn't kick him out of the hospital. And for a patient who didn't pay his bills, they did enough. I mean, if his daughter won't even show up for her own dad, why should they take the responsibility?"Her first instinct was to argue with me, but she held it back. Her eyes were red, and her voice cracked. "Felix, I need you to come with me. I can't pay the bills alone. I'm scared."Oh, trying to act vulnerable. That was rare. Pity it gained no sympathy from me.Five years. Five long years I spent giving everything I had for her. And for five years, all that got me was betrayal and humiliation. And now I was done tolerating her. Still, I went with her. No, not because I loved her. Because of George. Because of the late Diane.…We paid the bill and came

There was no answer but heavy breathing. George tried to say something, yet all he could manage were incoherent sentences. Wendy stood up, but Zack held her down. "It's probably a scam. I've seen this a lot of times. Your father would've at least made himself clear."My heart sank. I had a bad feeling about this. Worried, I said, "He had a stroke. It's a miracle he even managed to say something. Look, I'll let this slide once, Wendy. Just go to the hospital and see them now! Your mother's still in ER—"I was cut off. Another person took the phone. "You're the patients' family? I'm sorry, we did all we could for your mother, but she died. Your father had a stroke, and he still has to pay his bill. Come over and settle it."Still hesitant, Wendy asked, "Who are you?""The doctor. Get here as soon as you can." Then, he hung up.Wendy swiveled her head to me. There was shock and doubt in her eyes. Me? The news of Diane's death hit me hard. Tears had blurred my vision."Are you sure i
