I jumped to the side putting my fists up, clenched so tight my claws nearly dug into my skin. I wasn’t prepared for how sharp they were and I winced slightly from the shock of pain. Facing this new arrival whose voice was low, dark, strange and yet familiar and playful my was out of my element. Overpowering the males I faced was ever my strong suit couple that with the very real fact this could have been a fae I was going to meet my end quickly. “Who’s there?” I called, my voice nearly cracked at the thought of what it could have been.

“You first.” He cracked a smile so his sharp teeth shined in the darkness but that wasn’t the only thing shining. Those eyes… No. I had to do a double-take. Blue eyes that were the only thing that shined in the shadows. He was real, the man from my dreams. Could this had really been him? Stepping closer to me his features now became far easier to distinguish. He was similar to me, his clothes a bit more ragged. His scent it was slightly foul though, n

Some random servant came to get me for dinner. I didn’t bother to take note of which one it was. It didn’t matter to me. The dining hall I was led to had an empty space between Nok and Hectyr and I figured that was where I was being exiled. “Welcome to the cool kids club.” Hectyr smirked making sure his voice was only on the wind next to my ear. “Change your mind about learning your windtouched abilities yet?” I ignored him as best I could and turned my back to him making a point to only address Nok. “Long time huh?” He nodded, “At least you don’t have to sit next to Dimitris anymore.” “A fact I am more happy about tonight than anything.” Wulda entered with Emnore and Alred who pulled out the chairs for them before taking his own seat which welcomed Conrad and Anju. Mani and Odda were next leading Aurelia and Clarilla. Aurelia made sure to lock eyes with me as she took what used to be my seat and then flashed an innocent smile to Wulda. Soon it was only Dimitris left. We

“Everything okay?” Dimitris entered the room nearly silent. My only notice was Helix fading from view quickly. I nodded not wanting to say anything, needing a moment to make sure my thoughts were well under control. “I know you’re upset.” He was talking low, “Trust me, lunch was not something you’d have liked to attend.” Shrugging, I got back to my feet and put the Beltane journal back on the shelf hoping he didn’t have questions. “I would have liked to make the choice myself, but it’s fine. I’ve been reading.” “Learn anything new?” “I learned you like to appease your mother more than the average king.” my side eye back hopefully also conveyed the message I was not going to be quelled. “I do what I need to.” He sighed and took a seat, “You’re coming to dinner at least.” “Am I?” I scoffed, “Did the great Wulda approve?” “She can hate the fact you’re a ward of the crown all she wants. The fact remains you’re-” “A ward.” I growled, “That’s what I am. I’m not your mate, I’m not

“Read this one.” A diary fell from the shelf and landed on the floor causing my heart to sink a little. “Be easy with them!” I called and rushed over to the book. “Beltane?” It wasn’t close to the beginning maybe a couple of diaries in, so it was well after the barrier had been established. “Why this one?”No response. Why would I think differently? He was actually very chatty today comparatively. Wolves howl at night. That’s all that seems to make noise anymore. I’ve been watching the barrier for nearly ten years and this will be my seventh journal. It seems to be the only thing keeping me sane anymore. So long near this thing we know isn’t healthy but who else will do it? I need to know my family is protected and I need to know if there’s a breach. I need to know my enemies and their plans. That is my only objective. I will keep them safe. The diary skipped forward with only a single line dated months later: I know I heard the thoughts of my partner today. He wants to end it all

“The changeling will not be allowed at lunch.” Wulda glared down at me just briefly before turning back to Dimitris. “My first meal home is not going to be in the company of abominations.”Aurelia who had been waiting for her chance saw it, “Such a fine request queen mother. Thank you for finally bringing reason back into this castle.” Dimitris shot her a glare then turned to his mother, “Any other requests?”Wulda nodded, “I want to see the new wolf blood girl that was invited. Why was she not at my welcoming?”The crowd started to turn to each other looking for something to say. When no one responded Hectyr bowed, “She’s been getting to know the castle-”“Why is he talking to me?” Wulda looked above him making a point for everyone to notice that she really would not be addressing him further.“It’s a matter of space,” Dimitris grumbled, “The breakfast hall is only suited for our immediate family. The regular dining hall-”Wulda didn’t wait for Dimitris to finish, “He will sit out t

It took a few days but I was able to eventually not get immediately knocked down by Conrad. He stopped punching me at least even after my insistence that he not go easy. He’d just laugh and knock me on my ass. Helix was more than happy to continue with showing me how to access the bond in the afternoons so it pretty much filled up my day. Each night Dimitris would protest further saying once or twice he didn’t even notice me in his head which I guess wasn’t his favorite thing. Personally, I considered it an accomplishment. I’d continue with displaying my new skills and he’d tend to my bruised shins and arms until eventually it divulged into antics in the bedroom that left us both exhausted. Dinners were my least favorite activity but at least I got to sit next to Conrad instead of Hectyr who was now mysteriously seated furthest away from Dimitris. Typically that spot had been reserved for Nok. I was all too happy he filled it. We hadn’t resumed our training with the windtouched abi

“Ready?” Hectyr smirked. “I guess.” My shrug back was trying to be hateful but I knew I wasn’t able to be intimidating to any of these fae. “First lesson!” He called, “Assume everything you know is wrong.” I rolled my eyes, “Shocker.” He gave me another smirk before I saw one foot move. In an instant he was gone completely. I looked around trying to figure out where he could have gone. “Fun trick.” I hissed continuing to spin in a circle. “It’s not a trick.” His voice sounded right against my ear and I took the spear still in my hand slashing around. The only thing I managed to hit though was air. “Oh, I think you almost hit me.” his tone was sarcastic and I did not appreciate it. “Is this going to just be you proving I don’t know how to use my windtouched abilities? I think I’m well aware of it.” His scent. I heard Dimitris’s voice in my head. Try finding him by scent. Okay working together, maybe we could tag team this and actually do something. Closing my eyes I fo
