Sapphire’s POV

The scent of herbs and smoke lingered in the air. I sat on the edge of the cot with the blanket pulled around my shoulders, watching Elira stir something thick and green over the fire.

My ankle still throbbed, but that wasn’t what kept me restless. It was Kael.

Kael stood near the doorway, arms crossed, eyes locked on me like he was waiting for me to do something stupid.

“Elira,” I called out softly, “your son, what did he mean by ‘not much time left’?”

Elira didn’t flinch at my question. She poured the mixture into a wooden bowl and walked over. “Drink this.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Kael’s voice cut through the room. “Stop asking questions you’re not ready to hear answers to.” he spoke sharply.

I met his eyes. “Then explain it. Why the warning? Why are you both acting like I’m about to explode?”

He turned away. “You wouldn’t believe it if we told you.”

“Try me.”

Elira sighed and gently placed the bowl in my hand. “Drink first.”

“No,” I snapped. “Not until someone te

Alberto’s POVI meant every word I said to Sapphire. I hated Kael’s guts, and it stung that he had outsmarted me that way. But I was not one to keep people in prison just out of spite. Kael was still a valuable person to my forces; the skills he possessed were out of this world, and I did not just dispose of men like that. But when you are Alpha, you learn to turn off your emotions just to preserve your image.Sapphire’s expression dropped. I hated seeing her so downtrodden, but there was nothing I could do to help—at least, not the kind of help she wanted."Please, Alberto," she began. "Surely there is a way..."She let out a loud cry that escaped her lips, cutting short whatever she was about to say. I bent over her immediately, searching her face. "What? What’s wrong?"She shouted again, and I lifted my head. "Valerius!" I called. "Valerius!"She had a hand on her stomach, her face twisted in pure agony. I would help if only I knew how. The sound of footsteps drew closer, and I r

  • Hooked Between the Alpha Twins   Chapter 24

Sapphire’s POVAlberto shifted in his seat. He hardly ever seemed uncomfortable, but I could swear that, in this moment, he couldn't meet my eyes."What did you do?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at him.Letting out a heavy sigh, he shook his head. "I signed away a century of tithes and a strategic Northern pass just to get you out of there. I’ve weakened the borders for you."Stunned, I stared at him. He had bartered land and power—the very foundations of his rule—in exchange for me. Was I really that special?"You could have just let me go, Alberto," I began, my voice trembling. But he was not having any of that. "I can’t," he snapped, his voice raw. The sooner you understand that, the better for the both of us,"I shrank back, hearing the threat in his voice. How could it be that I was stuck with him? I can leave whenever I want, I wanted to snap back at him, but my throat suddenly felt dry. Before I ran away, a life with Alberto didn't seem so bad; after all, I did love him. But now

  • Hooked Between the Alpha Twins   Chapter 23

Sapphire's POVI was falling into a dark pit of nothingness. I was not being attacked, and as far as I could feel, there was no end to this pit. But what terrified me most was the absolute darkness; I couldn't even see my hands in front of me. I tried to scream, but no sound escaped. I was just falling, and I had no control.Suddenly, I felt a sharp tug at my belly button, and light burst into my senses, nearly blinding me. I gasped, blinking as the room slowly came into focus. The first thing I felt was the magic - it hit me like a physical blow. I blinked rapidly, trying to bring the room into focus. The light was too bright, the colors too vivid, and I was hearing sounds everywhere—footsteps and voices. Finally, after a moment, I was able to look at the ceiling without feeling like I would combust from the energy around me. It was vaulted, painted with scenes of ancient wolf kings and silver moons.I shifted my hand, feeling th

  • Hooked Between the Alpha Twins   Chapter 22

Alberto's POVThe air in the infirmary was thick with the cloying scent of crushed valerian, mountain sage, and the low hum of the high healers' magic. Normally, I wouldn't be caught dead in here—I detested the place—but circumstances were different.I wanted to make sure that whatever they were doing was helping Sapphire, because one thing my encounter at the village had taught me was that waiting for reports from subordinates would always end in disappointment.I watched as Master Valerius and his acolytes moved around Sapphire's bed. Their hands glowed with a soft golden light, their brows knitted in concentration. Whatever they were doing seemed to be working; the gray translucent tint was slowly fading from her skin. She was still a far cry from her normal color, but this slight improvement was something I could work with.I wondered if she would ever fully recover from what the "Dead Zone" did to her. The few minutes I spent in the

Kael's POVIt tunnel felt different than it did when we first came through it. Now, there was no sound of liveliness in our footsteps, no conversation, nothing but deflated spirits and the suffocating absolute atmosphere. The silence of the Dead Zone seemed to amplify the sound of our footsteps, only the occasional sound of a twig breaking under our feet or a branch stepped upon and the crunch of grass interjected it.The light cast long dancing shadows against the walls, making the tunnel look like the throat of some ancient beast. I stopped and turned back again. “I think we should exchange,”.Elira was probably okay, but I didn’t want her to mistakenly drop Sapphire in a sudden bout of tiredness. Better she was with me, and I was sure of her well-being.In one motion, I set down the sticks and dried leaves and carefully handed the torch to Elira, making sure it did not make contact with Sapphire. Slowly and carefully, I l

  • Hooked Between the Alpha Twins   Chapter 20

Kael's POV"She won't last another twelve hours, Kael. Look at her," Elira's voice was a frantic whisper. I could detect so much worry in it, but I was not going to mirror that. I didn't look up from the piece of hard bread I was breaking between my fingers; I couldn't. "I see her, Elira. I've been counting every new vein that pops up and changes color on her wrist.""If I had known this was going to escalate this badly, I wouldn't have—"."You want to know what's worse than us being in a doomed condition?" I growled, unable to conceal how I felt anymore. "It's you whining about it and feeling guilty".Elira stared at me, disbelief etched on her face. "Yes," I confirmed, "I'm tired of hearing how much you wish things did not turn out like this, and I'm tired of hearing Sapphire say that she didn't mean to get us into this. I'm tired of hearing the problem. When do we get a solution?".Elira leaned closer so that her shoulder brushed mine. Her brows furrowed with resolve. "The baby i
