Chapter 2 The Papers

Author: Dolius
Everything went black, and a warm trickle ran down my forehead.

Maris screamed, not because of me, but because she feared my blood would stain the carpet. "Grayson, stop. This could turn deadly."

Hands grabbed for Grayson to pull him back.

"Forget it," another voice said. "Not worth it over some trash like him."

"Come on, we still have a celebration. Don't ruin it."

At last, Grayson backed off and, with a look of disgust, wiped his hands on a napkin. "Throw him out," he ordered.

They hauled me from the private room like a bag of trash and dumped me on the cold hallway floor.

Maris followed, her voice completely flat. "Lucen, you made your choice. Grayson's right. We're not from the same world. Let's break up."

I braced myself against the wall and staggered to my feet. Blood blurred my sight; her face warped in the haze.

"Maris, your father is a scholar. You should know that a researcher's work and reputation are worth more than a life. You stole half of my father's life!" I shouted.

Maris took a step back and her eyes slid away.

"It was an accident. Who knew your father would be so fragile? Grayson said if you keep quiet, he'll pay five hundred thousand a year in support until your father dies.

"He'll also get you a decent job after graduation. Isn't that better than struggling on your own?"

I shook with rage and tore the words from my throat. "Maris, my father once praised you as smart, kind, and full of spark. If you have any decency left, expose Grayson!"

From inside the room, Grayson's voice came, thick with mockery. "Maris, why waste your breath on that idiot? He probably doesn't even know his father's research papers—the ones we tossed—are being sold online as junk. Someone said they want to buy them as toilet paper, just to wipe off a bit of a genius' bad luck."

My chest felt like it was splitting open.

Those papers were my father's life—every line, every mark written through countless sleepless nights, carved from his very soul.

Grayson came out grinning and shoved his phone in my face.

On the screen was a resale site—photos of my father's familiar manuscripts lined up under the title, 'Down-and-out Professor's Papers—Just for Laughs'.

The comments below were vile.

'Didn't this old guy have a stroke? Can he even still write?'

"Haha, I heard Grayson the genius took his research. Serves him right.'

'I'll pay ten bucks for it. My dog could use some new bedding. Maybe it'll turn him into a genius too.'

I lunged for the phone, and Grayson kicked me in the chest.

"See?" He sneered. "Everyone knows I'm a genius. Your dad was just a stepping stone."

He turned to Maris with a smirk. "Maris, didn't you always say this kid looked decent? Let's make it more entertaining today. Watch how low he'll sink for his father."

Grayson gave the other rich kids a look. "Tie him up. Take him to the hospital. Make him confess, in front of his father, that his dad is a fraud and stole all his work. The son should know best what his father really is."

My eyes burned, and I pleaded with Maris. "Maris, please. Don't do this."

My voice was raw with despair.

Maris didn't flinch; she simply turned away and avoided my gaze. They hauled me roughly into a car.

Adrian wasn't just respected in academia. His family held tremendous influence across the country. The Vale family's wealth and standing were insignificant compared to his.Liora's anger flared."They're all rotten," she snapped. "Professor Locke told me that Grayson's father had a long history of academic misconduct, all of which was buried back then."Before she could say more, Maris' parents approached me.Usually critical to the point of disdain, barely sparing me a glance, they were suddenly unnervingly warm."Lucen, I know you've been wronged, but Maris is innocent!""It's all that brat Grayson's fault! He corrupted Maris!""She just loves you too much. She was confused and only told a few lies to protect him."Liora stepped back, making room. I pulled my hands free from theirs and laughed bitterly. "Innocent? My father was being tormented while she stood by and watched. That's innocent? When she uploaded those twisted, misleading things online just to destroy me, was t

Maris, you even posted those twisted videos and false statements online, trying to make sure my dad and I never recover!"Maris froze completely. "You… The child… Let me explain!"Explain? At this point, what was there to explain?Adrian's gaze swept across everyone in the room. "Who is Grayson?"Grayson panicked, scrambling on the floor. "Professor Locke! It's not my fault! Really, it's not! It was Lucen! He's jealous of my talent, so he made all of this up to frame me!"Maris panicked too. "Lucen! Please, plead with Professor Locke! Tell him this is all a misunderstanding! Grayson would never hurt your father! He was just… joking with you!"I laughed, bitter and disbelieving, at her shameless words. "Maris! You've destroyed a man's entire life! It's not a game!"After confirming Grayson's identity, Adrian strode forward and pressed his boot against Grayson's chest. With just a little more pressure fro

A group of men in black suits barged in, their presence like a cold wind. The leader, a middle-aged man, barked in a low voice, "Everyone, stop!"His authority settled over the room like a weight.Grayson and his cronies instinctively loosened their grip on me and took a few steps back, faces pale. Maris went white, too, watching the uninvited guests with equal parts fear and uncertainty."Who are you? Who gave you permission to break in?" Grayson shouted, clutching his bleeding nose, his bravado thin and trembling. The leader didn't even glance at him. He came straight to my side and signaled for the others to help me up. He crouched, inspected my wounds, and frowned."Professor Ward's emergency call came from here. Where is he?" His eyes swept the motionless figure of my father on the hospital bed.Every chest in the room tightened.'An emergency call? That old man hasn't even been able to move, has he?'Grayson tried to keep his composure, desperate to cover up the truth."

"He's about to come back. If he finds out what you've done, the Dawn family—and every one of you—will be finished."The Adrian Locke I named was my father's oldest friend and a towering figure in our field. He was blunt and incorruptible; academic dishonesty was his greatest contempt. He'd been working overseas for years, so many people at home didn't even know he and my father were close. This was my last card.Grayson and his friends paused for a beat, then burst into louder laughter."Professor Adrian Locke? As if. Are you kidding me?" one of them said."We checked. Your dad's a loner, a weird guy. Besides you, he has no friends," another added."Professor Locke? What's next? Are you going to tell us the Pope's your godfather?"Maris snorted derisively. "Lucen, have you lost your mind? Are you talking nonsense now? Grayson's already dug through every bit of that AI model's data. Even if the original creator showed up, there'd be nothing for you to gain."A smug smile cross
