Chapter 9

Author: The Genesis
Henry rushed back to the office, where work buried him alive. Documents were piled high across his desk. He flipped through them page by page until his eyes grew strained. Finally, he paused and glanced out the window.

Right at that moment, a plane flew across the sky, its tail leaving a long white trail against the deep blue sky. For some reason, a sudden, sharp pang pierced Henry’s chest. An inexplicable sense of unease began to spread in his heart, as if something of the utmost importance were slipping away from him.

Frowning, he pressed a hand against his chest, and Lena’s face instantly flooded his mind. In a daze, he remembered that she had muttered something right before he left her apartment. Her voice had been so faint that he could not catch it at the time, and now, no matter how hard he tried, he could not recall what she said.

Henry’s grip on his pen tightened. Something felt deeply wrong. Was she still angry? Lena had always had a willful, spoiled streak. Whenever she felt upset, she never bottled it up, and the number of people she had humiliated in their social circle was too much to count.

Over the past month, he had admittedly diverted a lot of his energy toward Ava. Perhaps he had neglected Lena, pushing her to the point where she got so furious that she burned all those gifts.

Sighing, he pressed the intercom on his desk. His secretary, Grant, quickly pushed the door open and stepped inside, standing respectfully before him.

“Have someone send the latest seasonal line of clothing, bags, and jewelry to Lena’s apartment.” Henry looked up and ordered, “Also, tell the wedding planners to pay extra close attention to the details. Keep a tight eye on everything.”

Grant nodded in agreement. Just as he was about to turn around, Henry called him back. “By the way, any updates on the matter I told you to look into?”

“We have a few leads, sir, but we still need to verify the accuracy of the information.”

“Alright.” Henry twirled his pen as he said, “The moment you get confirmation, let me know immediately.”

Ever since Lena’s mother’s keepsake was broken, he had been desperately looking for a way to make it up to her. She had no regard for ordinary jewelry whatsoever, so he sent his men out to ask around. That was when he unexpectedly discovered that before Lena’s mother’s passing, the woman had donated a sapphire necklace to a charity foundation and that, after changing hands several times, it had ended up in the collection of a foreign buyer. He had immediately ordered Grant to track down the necklace’s whereabouts. No matter how much it cost, he was determined to buy it back.

An image of Lena’s face lighting up with joy upon receiving the necklace flashed across his mind, and a faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips. He picked up his phone and shot a text over to Lena.

[I had someone send the latest seasonal clothes, jewelry, and bags to your apartment.]

Right after, he sent another. [Lenny, I’ve also prepared a gift for you. You’re going to love it.]

There was no reply from her end, but he was not in a rush. Lena was just throwing a tantrum. Once she cooled off, she would text him back.

Henry worked at the office until the dead of night. By the time he wrapped up all his work and checked his phone, it was already one o’clock in the morning. In his chat history with Lena, his two messages were still sitting there, completely ignored.

“She has quite a temper on her,” he muttered under his breath before stuffing the phone back into his pocket.

A knock sounded on the office door, and Grant walked in with a file, placing it on the desk.

“Mr. Hale, we’ve tracked it down. That necklace is going up for bidding at the largest auction house in Malkovia. The event is scheduled for the day after tomorrow at eight-thirty in the evening. Should we send someone to–”

“No need. I’ll go myself!” Henry cut him off, standing up abruptly and grabbing his coat from the back of his chair. “Book the earliest flight right now. We leave immediately.”

“But…” Grant hesitated. “The day after the auction is your wedding day. Won’t that be cutting it too close? Maybe it’s safer to send someone we trust–”

“I won’t rest easy leaving this to anyone else.” Henry checked the time and said confidently, “There’s enough time. Once I get the necklace, I’ll fly straight back. I can surely make it in time for the wedding the next day.”

He wanted to hand this surprise to Lena personally.

“You guys…”Lena stared at the two people standing at the door. She was too astonished to speak.Sydney rushed forward, immediately grabbing Lena’s hand and pulling her toward the exit. “There’s no time to explain. Let’s get out of here first!”As Sydney dragged Lena forward, Lucas kept pace right beside them, effortlessly shoving away the maids who tried to swarm them.“What is going on? Sydney, how did you even end up here with him?” Lena asked as they ran.“The moment I got your SOS text, I sent people to investigate it. That’s how I found out Henry had kidnapped you onto this private island,” Sydney explained, her words flying out at lightning speed. “But I didn’t have enough manpower on short notice to guarantee a rescue right under Henry’s nose. And right around then, Lucas tracked me down. He said he knew you and wanted to team up.”She shot Lena a wink and teased, “Not bad, girl. Where on earth did you reel in a billionaire bachelor like this? He’s literally the heir to a

Henry’s face instantly drained of color. His lips trembled so hard that he could not form words.Looking at his pathetic state, Lena felt a twisted sense of satisfaction bubble up inside her, and she deliberately took her time to continue, “If you hadn’t shown up, I probably would have dated him, fallen in love, gotten married, and maybe by now… we would have had a beautiful child together–”“Stop it!” Henry roared, his eyes bloodshot. “Lenny, I’m begging you. Please don’t say another word!”“Heh,” Lena snorted. “You need to understand that from the exact moment you kidnapped me, brought me to this place, and forced me to marry you, the only thing I have left for you is pure hatred.”Henry could not take another second of it. He stumbled to his feet and fled the room in a blind panic once again.Lena watched as he left, the warmth in her eyes fading into ice. She had to find a way out of there as soon as possible. She absolutely could not allow herself to be at his mercy. The nex

“I am not marrying you!”Lena’s chest heaved with fury. The absolute absurdity of the situation made her blood boil.As if he had not heard a single word she said, Henry carried on casually. “I had a few more custom wedding dresses made for you. Let’s eat first, and then I’ll take you to try them on.”He reached out to grab her hand, but Lena slapped it away and bolted toward the front door, desperate to escape that place immediately. To her surprise, Henry did not even try to stop her. However, the moment she shoved the front door open, she understood why he was so confident.Outside, there were no city streets. Instead, a massive estate unfolded before her. A solitary villa stood squarely in the center of a manicured lawn. In the distance, people who looked like staff members were moving about, and the entire property was surrounded by a dense, endless forest that stretched as far as the eye could see.“Where are we?”Lena whipped around, glaring furiously at Henry as he stroll

Lena’s hand froze mid-air, her fingertips hovering just above the clay she was about to grab. She truly had not expected Lucas to lay his feelings bare out of nowhere, and a sudden wave of heat rushed to her ears, leaving them burning. As she turned her head, she found herself staring straight into those emerald-green eyes. She had always known how captivating his gaze could be when he was serious, but facing it up close made her heart skip a beat. After just a second, she hurriedly averted her gaze, her fingers nervously picking at the edge of the workbench.“Lucas… why do you have a crush on me?” Her eyelashes fluttered as she asked in a soft voice.Lucas tilted his head slightly. “Do I need a reason for that?”Lena bit her lip. “I… I might not be the person you think I am.”“I’ve never looked at you through a rose-colored lens,” Lucas said, leaning in a little closer, his tone turning earnest. “The Lena I see secretly passes out leftover bread to the homeless at the corner of t

Henry's face drained of color. He slumped onto the floor, looking utterly defeated, as he muttered repeatedly under his breath, “Lenny, you can’t do this to me…”The windchimes by the entrance jingled once more, and Lucas pushed the door open, holding a bag of freshly baked cookies in his hand.“Lena!”He called out enthusiastically, but his voice trailed off as his eyes locked onto Henry’s bloodshot gaze. The blonde man froze for a second, his brows knitting together. “Is he bothering you again? Do you want me to throw him out?”Lena glanced down at Henry, who was still paralyzed on the floor, and then looked over at Lucas by the door. She gave Lucas a small wave, gesturing for him to come over.Confused, Lucas walked over and came to a stop. Before he could ask anything, Lena stood up from her lounge chair, walked straight up to him, and then called out, “Henry!”Henry turned his head like a lifeless doll, his eyes hollow.Lena reached out and wrapped her arm around Lucas’s,

Henry returned to his hotel room, feeling completely hollowed out. He had caught the earliest flight possible to get there. The moment his feet touched the ground, he had rushed over to find her like a madman, without even pausing to take a breather. Now, every ounce of strength felt like it had been drained from his body. Even lifting his hand felt like a monumental effort. He had no idea how to make things right with Lena, but he knew with absolute certainty that he could not lose her.As he collapsed onto the bed, an overwhelming exhaustion washed over him, and a blur of fragmented visions flashed before his eyes. In a dazed state, he drifted off into a deep sleep. In his dream, he saw the past life Lena had spoken of. He was floating in mid-air like a detached bystander, watching another version of himself make completely foreign choices. At the wedding in that past life, Ava had similarly used suicide to threaten him. His expression back then had been even colder than it was t
