LOGINHillary Gate had it all: wealth, prestige, and a future mapped straight to the top of the legal world. Until everything collapsed. Her parents are sent to prison. Her education is ripped away. And one reckless night leaves her pregnant for Lester Dale, the Alpha King of the Crescent Pack. Lester is a rare and powerful breed of wolf, bound by duty and legacy, and unaware of the devastation he leaves behind. Nine years later, Hillary rises from ruin to become a renowned lawyer. Fate, or cruelty, throws her back into Lester’s path inside a courtroom. But while Hillary remembers everything, Lester remembers nothing. Drawn to her, Lester demands a secret relationship. When she refuses, he threatens to expose her secret—never realizing he is the very reason it exists. When the truth finally surfaces, will Lester fight for redemption, or power? And can Hillary forgive the man who shattered her life, especially when he holds her past, her present, and her heart in his hands?
View MoreHelpless, I fall on my knees, tears streaking my face as I watch the pack agents leaving with our belongings in boxes. Our assets are being seized and frozen by the law due to one mistake I made. The world swirls around, making me dizzy. My innocent father, Judge Gate, was arrested for bribery, corruption, and case manipulation. The nightmare is real because of me. Because I told my parents Lester was my mate.
If I hadn't met Lester four months ago at his victory party and gotten pregnant, I wouldn't have told my parents Lester was my mate. And I wouldn't have submitted to the bond if Lester hadn't been my childhood crush, which turned into love when I became a teenager and now has turned into hatred. “Hill,” Mom calls behind me, helping me to my feet. “Get up.”
“Mom…” I tear up. “I'm sorry, Mom. This is all my fau—” “Shh,” Mom interrupts in a firm voice. She faces me, holding my arms. “Don't ever say that, you hear me?”
I try to nod, but my head suddenly feels heavy with guilt. No matter how much she tries to convince me it's not my fault, it won't change the truth their misery started because of me.
“What's so wrong for my baby girl to have a mate?” Her voice thins in sadness. “Hmm?”
“None of this would have happened if Lester had kept to his promise,” I say, sniffing.
Lester strung me along with a false hope he would come for me after telling his father about our fated bond. I believed him because his father is highly feared in society.
“Well…” Mom clasps my hands weakly. “It’s obvious he's not coming. The earlier you stop waiting on him, the better.”
Mom guides me to a white couch and carefully lowers me to it. She sits next to me. “Now, you know he's not coming; it's time…” She gazes up at me, and my heart squeezes at the words she's about to spill. “You let the pregnancy go. This pregnancy is too much. I can't imagine you living the life of a rogue.”
Tears streak her face, and she wipes them away. “You…you can't do this alone. You…you can't raise a child all by yourself in a rogue village.”
Out of guilt for being the reason she's in so much pain, I struggle to nod, holding back my tears. “You’re right, Mom.”
“I'm so sorry it has come to this.” She cradles me, pressing my head to her chest and stroking my back gently. “And you don't have to get worried or scared, because Mom will be with you every step of the way.” Three police officers step into the living room through the open front door.
“May I help you?” Mom asks, forcing calm.
I stand slowly.
The handcuffs dangling from the lithe male officer’s hand make my stomach churn. “You're arrested for being your husband's accomplice,” the officer says, approaching Mom with the cuffs.
“Let me make a call, please,” Mom implores, her voice trembling.
“Mom.” My voice is shaking. With heavy steps, I trudge forward, scared.
“Officer, please,” Mom pleads again. “For the sake of my children, let me make this call.”
Hyperventilating, I ball my hands, extending them. “O…officer, take me instead, please.”
I can't live with the guilt that my parents are spending their lives in prison. My sister will never forgive me, and I won't forgive myself either. I have to be the one imprisoned. I have to.
“Stay out of this.” The female officer among them puts my fisted hands away.
“You have the right to remain silent,” the male officer recites as he reaches for Mom's wrists, cuffing them one at a time. “And anything you say can and will be used against you in court.” “Take me instead—” I cry, extending my hands the second time.
“Hey!” the female officer barks, interrupting me. With her palm flat on my chest, she pushes me backward. “Back off!”
“Sweetie.” Mom turns to me, tears shining in her eyes.
“Mom.” I'm struggling to breathe. My voice drowns in endless tears.
“Get your sister from school. Your aunt will come once she sees the news.”
“Mom.” Her name barely leaves my lips.
“Make sure you get rid of it,” she whispers before the police officers drag her away.
I stand there, helpless, shattered, until I can't take it anymore.
Hillary's P O VA call comes to the telephone in my office, and I take it without looking away from the computer screen. I bend my head to my shoulder, holding the telephone in between as I continue to strike my finger pads against the computer keys.“Come to my office,” Lindsay says over the phone.“Is it urgent?” I ask slowly, as I struggle to share my attention between her and what I'm doing. “Can I take ten…please?”“N…sure, you can,” she stutters, and my fingers reduce their strokes, my brows knit as I wonder the reasons her words are breaking for the first time. “T…take your time.” She ends the call, and I sigh in relief and give my full attention to the report I'm preparing.Exactly ten minutes later, I leave for Lindsay's office. When I enter and see the wolf-shifter sitting across from Lindsay, my heart falls into my stomach. I try to think why he decided to go to Lindsay instead of coming to me. I thought we'd gone past this stage.A smile lights up his face as he tilts his
I should be going through reports of different teams from the pack fair; instead, I'm busy dialing the shaman's number for the countless time, despite it being switched off. I have no other choice but to keep trying. She's the only one who can make Father believe he has to leave the pack. It would have been me if I'd had the balls.I toss the phone on my desk when the call doesn't connect and tip my head over the chair; my palm presses my forehead, feeling utterly helpless. I can sense something's wrong with her phone; maybe it got stolen or spoiled. Shaking off the thought that something terrible might have happened to her, I reach for my phone, which has recently buzzed.Cade's text reads, “I'll be with the dirty shaman shortly.”Meeting her was the only solution, which is why Cade left last night. I contemplate reading a report or waiting for Cade's next text when the tent door bursts open, revealing a furious wolf-shifter who makes my heart squeeze each time I remember he'll be pa
Lester's P O VI park in Anders' school compound, but this time it is different. Anders is here with me, in the passenger seat. After he left enraged that night, I didn't stop reaching out to him, explaining how Hill makes me feel: bold, angry, happy, and sad—all the feelings I've never felt in my entire years of existence. I let him know I wouldn't be coming anywhere near his porch again since we don't agree on anything.Surprisingly, he called for a favor, telling me he needed a ride to his children's school because his Jeep broke down. I was over the moon when I arrived at his workplace earlier than the time frame I was given. Though we didn't say much, it felt great driving with an old friend. He steps out of the jeep and rounds it when he asks, “Aren't you coming?”My heart flutters at his request as I step out of the driver's seat. This is a sign there's still a chance to have my best friend back. The principal is telling Anders that his children's names are listed in a scholars
Benjamin growls in frustration, muttering about thinking he had a full bottle of aspirin lying around. He's been having severe migraines lately, so he takes a lot of painkillers for them. I wonder why a dominant wolf-shifter is having a serious migraine.Hillary's P O VCarrying my handbag from the counter, dressed for work, I walk to the bathroom to meet Benjamin. I don't talk immediately as I meet him on a call. He's talking about coming back to work, but he has to meet someone first.Despite being nothing but a roommate sharing a bed, the news of his leaving saddens and aggravates me. He's leaving to be with his mate and his son—his ideal family, and Hayden is going to miss them so much. Oh my goodness, I will cry if I keep up with this thought. Tilting my hand, I pat my eyes with a finger. When he moves the call away from his ear, I ask him, “Are the pills going to be here before evening? I can get you one on my way home.” He growls again, reaching for the pills. “What if you work
