Chapter 3

Author: Reading Lamp
My eyes lit up, and the question slipped out before I could stop it. "Does that mean you're still willing to sponsor me?"

His gaze landed on the cat I was holding protectively. Under the moonlight, even his sharp, cold features seemed to soften slightly.

"The contract's been signed. Of course it stands."

[The female lead ran back home and refused to see the male lead. He's upset, so he came back to find the supporting female character.]

[Hilarious. The supporting female character actually thinks the male lead cares about her. Disgusting.]

[It was never stated outright, but the male lead only sponsored her to make the female lead jealous. She's too dumb to realize it. The moment she's no longer useful, he'll dump her again.]

Holding the cat, I followed Ian closely behind. I ignored the mocking comments.

I didn't care. As long as I could eat, stay in school, and get the cat treated, that was more than enough for me.

After realizing Ian sponsored me only to make Katie Stafford jealous, I committed many 'terrible deeds' under the relentless insults of the floating comments, all to prove my usefulness.

At meals, I took the initiative to place food on his plate. Before bed, I gave him head massages. I even shamelessly got into the car when he picked Katie up from school.

If Katie refused to sit in the passenger seat, I would brazenly take it myself.

After several such incidents, Katie finally threw a fit. She declared she would move to her childhood friend's house and never return.

The atmosphere inside the car became tense instantly.

I turned to look at Ian with bright eyes. "Snowy's injuries are almost healed. Sir, would you like to come see her with me?"

Snowy was the name I gave the white cat. Since Katie had a mild allergy to cat fur, Snowy had been staying at a veterinary hospital.

In the dim car, Ian rested one hand on the steering wheel and looked away from the rearview mirror.

He narrowed his eyes at me slightly and smiled.

"Sure."

Katie, whose foot was halfway out of the Porsche, stopped. She immediately sat back down and stomped her foot furiously.

"No! You can't! Today is your birthday. I promised I'd spend it with you. How can you leave with this wretch instead?"

Leaning forward from the back seat, she wrapped her arms possessively around Ian's arms.

His indifferent gaze flicked toward me.

I got the message and stepped out of the car. I let the gust of wind from the departing car whip my clothes into disarray.

What they forgot, however, was that the villa staff had the day off. The door was fingerprint-locked, and I couldn't get in.

So I curled up beneath the villa's outer awning and stared blankly into the night.

The late-autumn wind cut like knives.

Still, compared to the days when I had neither enough food nor warmth, this was already far better.

After that day, Katie's relationship with Ian eased considerably.

Ian's attitude toward me also shifted from fully cold and distant to slight kindness.

He began asking about my studies. When he returned from business trips, he brought me gifts.

If Katie received a diamond necklace, I received a delicate brooch.

If she received an extravagant bouquet of imported roses, I received a single budding tulip.

When the housekeeper prepared nourishing soup for Katie, Ian would instruct her to serve me a bowl as well.

Once I realized the sponsorship wasn't going to be revoked anytime soon, the tension I'd been carrying finally loosened, and I devoted more energy to my studies.

After all, just as the comments said, I would be discarded sooner or later. It was better to learn as much as I could before that day came.

After Snowy recovered, Katie brought her back.

Since she was allergic to cat fur, she played with Snowy through an airtight raincoat.

I leaned against the airplane window and watched the stretch of blue sea and sky outside. I watched Ian's figure shrink into an increasingly smaller black dot.The pink-and-white ears atop my head finally popped out once I relaxed completely. They were twitching gently on their own.Ivan sat across from me without speaking. He simply held out a lollipop.I instinctively tried to refuse, but I soon realized it was a dried cod lollipop. It was shaped a little awkwardly, but it gave off an irresistibly savory aroma.I froze. He looked at the ears on my head and smiled like a winner. "Don't like catnip? Then how about this? It's custom-made. There's only one in the world."I looked at the dried cod lollipop in his hand, then at his almond-shaped eyes.[Ahhh! I declare Ivan as the winner! He's so smooth! He really does know what he's doing!][Respect! This is what love looks like! He knows what she likes and treats her as a one-of-a-kind person!][Hmph! My poor Mr. Hendrick. He cra

[Holy crap! It's a showdown! A top-tier showdown! This is my time of the year][Fight! Fight! Fight for the kitty!][Mr. Hendrick looks so pitiable. His eyes are full of tears. Rudith, just go back with him. He'll change, I swear!][Take your savior complex somewhere else! Why should she go back? Back to being a substitute, wearing a collar, and eating cake she hates? Rudith, run! I support you!]The barrage of comments felt like a tug-of-war inside my own chest. One was saying he looked so broken. The other reminded me about the cold collar around my neck.Ian ignored Ivan completely. His eyes locked onto me like a net trying to trap me where I stood."I'll increase the allowance tenfold," Ian said.I shook my head."I'll buy you an island, one that belongs only to you."I shook my head again."Rudith!" He finally lost all patience. He was nearly shouting my name. "What do you want?""I want to be a person."My voice wasn't loud, but it hit him like a sledgehammer.I loo

For the first time, cracks of panic appeared on his always composed face.It was panic more devastating than losing a billion-dollar contract.I thought my new life would begin peacefully on that island in the southern hemisphere, with sea breeze and palm trees.Unfortunately, I underestimated Ian.We had just landed at the island's private airstrip when a row of black helicopters appeared overhead, blotting out the sky.The rotor winds whipped up a violent gust. I almost lost my footing.Ivan stepped in front of me protectively and looked up at the leading helicopter. He clicked his tongue. "Going this big, huh?"The cabin door opened. Ian descended the rope ladder in a black trench coat.He wasn't wearing his glasses, and the wind had tousled his hair. Two buttons at his collar were undone. It was something that had never happened before. He looked disheveled, but the aura around him felt apocalyptic. His gaze cut through everyone and landed precisely on me.His eyes were

After doing all that, I deleted the entire browsing history and slipped back to the living room as silently as a cat that had stolen a fish.Ian was still on the phone. I could hear him speaking fluently in a foreign language. He sounded impatient while he reprimanded whoever was on the other end.I lay back down on the carpet, hugged the soft ball of yarn, and buried my face deep inside it.My heart pounded like a drum.An hour later, my phone vibrated.I received a text message from an unknown number.[3 p.m. Back door.]I clutched my phone so tightly my palms were slick with sweat. The opportunity had come.At half past two, Ian had an important video conference. I used the excuse of taking a nap and returned to my room. There was nothing to pack. Nothing in that house belonged to me.I took off the expensive silk nightgown and changed back into the faded T-shirt and jeans I had worn when I first arrived. Then I stood in front of the mirror, took a deep breath, and raise

Jingle.I looked at Ian. Suddenly, I chuckled.I wasn't crying, and I wasn't making a scene. All I did was chuckle softly.Ian seemed to freeze. He loosened his grip on my chin a little."My name is not Powder," I said, enunciating each word with the clearest, calmest voice I had ever used in my life.[Huh? Did she actually just fight back?][Holy crap! This just turned into an awakening arc! Run, girl!][She's dead. Mr. Hendrick hates disobedient pets. The last one who talked to him like that probably has grass three feet high on her grave.]Ian's expression darkened visibly. A storm brewed in his deep, unfathomable eyes."What did you say?""I said, my name is Rudith Summers," I said. In fact, I even lifted my chin at him despite how badly my legs were shaking. "R-U-D-I-T-H S-U-M-M-E-R-S. Did you get that, Mr. Ian Hendrick?"It was the first time I had addressed him by his full name.It wasn't 'Sir' or 'Master.'It was 'Mr. Hendrick,' an equal and distant form of address

"Ivan," Ian suddenly said. His voice was deep. "Stay away from him from now on."My body went rigid. I didn't dare make a sound."You're not allowed to accept anything from him. Don't believe a single word he says."His fingers slid along my spine, moving upward, until they stopped at the back of my neck. He gently pinched the soft flesh there. It was as if he were holding a cat's fate between his fingers."Do you understand?"I closed my eyes. My throat burned. I spoke through clenched jaws. "I understand."He said nothing more and instead only tightened his grip.A muffled whimper escaped me. The bell at my throat jingled in a frantic series of chimes. The sound felt like a death knell. That night, I couldn't sleep.Lying in bed, every tiny movement made the bell ring.Ian was sleeping in the next room. The walls were well insulated, yet I couldn't shake the feeling that he could hear it.This was his way of keeping me under surveillance and controlling me.By the secon
