The drive to the arena continues in silence. The only sound is the low hum of the engine. The island is a stunning sight and the calming scenery all around contrasts the tension curling in my stomach.

I did not fully consider it but now, it dawns on me that I will be facing Alpha Mikos again. And suddenly, even with the fresh air coming in through the window, the car feels suffocating.

I have grown so accustomed to dreading Alpha Mikos that I cannot easily shake it off. Alaric's words still linger in my mind.

The business of the Everdale Pack has never been one I bothered about, or even cared about long before they began hunting me. So why do I find it so hard to make peace with the fact that Alpha Rich's reputation will only become more solid after the Everdale Pack secures their ranking for another cycle?

And everyone would return to their various packs like nothing has changed, all the wrongdoings of Everdale elites forgotten, buried underneath their titles and accolades.

Alaric still watches me, his expression is unreadable. I can sense the intensity of his stare without having to look over at him, that gaze seems to see beyond my surface, peeling away the layers one after the other till he finds something deep within that I'm not ready to reveal yet.

"Would it even matter?" I finally break the silence. My voice is quieter than I intended. "If the truth about the Landry's comes out, would it change anything?"

Alaric's gaze doesn't waver. "No." He admits. "Not unless someone more powerful makes it matter."

His answer does not surprise me. I swallow hard, my fingers clenching at my sides. In the end, it always comes down to power and influence. Who speaks the loudest, who controls the narrative. The world doesn't care about the truth, it cares about the people with enough power to shape the truth.

And that kind of power is something I've never had.

Not long after, we arrive at the arena. It is already buzzing with life by the time we get there. Cedric parks near a private entrance, far removed from the rest of the crowd.

A strange and unfamiliar energy fills my veins. Though I forfeited, something in me still wonders how far into the games I could have gone... would I have made this final stage?

Alaric alights the vehicle first and then he offers me a hand. He guides me down onto solid ground, his grip is firm and steady. It provides a foreign reassurance...a certainty that for today at least, I am not standing alone.

The moment we step through the entrance of the arena, all eyes move to us and we become the centre of attention.

Curious whispers ripple through the crowd of elites like wildfire. As for me, the weight of their stares, the judgement and curiosity in their eyes all unsettle me, but I keep a straight face.

Alaric on the other hand shows no reaction at all. He strides in with quiet confidence, unfazed by the attention. He already anticipated this, I did too but it does not make it easier to face.

Alaric keeps me close to his side, his presence itself serves as a silent warning to anyone who dares to question my place beside him.

Yet, I can pick up on the quiet murmurs.

'That's the fire elemental who forfeited.'

'I hear she belongs to the Everdale Pack. Why did she participate under a false identity?'

'Do you think she is really with him?'

'Listen, rumors say she burned someone alive.'

I resist the urge to scoff at how quickly news about me has circulated in just a few days, even rumors from Everdale are coming to light.

Alaric leads the way to the private viewing section that is elevated above the main stands. The view of the arena below is clear from this height. Down below, the twelve elites stand in a circle waiting for the final stage to begin.

The announcer's voice booms almost immediately, as though they had been waiting for Alaric's arrival and I do not doubt that they have. He begins introducing the twelve participants left, their packs and element affinity. Most of them are either Alphas or Betas of well established packs and a few high ranked warriors, the weeding out of the weaker lot is complete, these twelve are the very best of the elites in these parts.

"Mikos Landry of Everdale! Rank of Alpha, earth element!" The announcer calls out.

My stomach churns uneasily at that. Mikos stands tall in the center of the ring, his presence is as imposing as ever. His expression is eerily familiar, that characteristic smug smirk he always has on, when the cameras are flashing in his face.

Mikos Landry, the philanthropist, DA of Everdale. But all I see is a man that revels in attention, in the power this tournament gives and in the spotlight Lana's influence as a socialite can bring him.

I understand him better now, and I know why he still attended the games regardless of Alpha Rich's death. The elections are drawing near and rumors in Red Ember say Alpha Mikos's opponent is also a shifter. The vote of the supernatural community that was assuredly his, has now been divided.

Mikos needs to remind the shifters why he is a better choice for DA than a lesser shifter race. And what better way than boosting his pack rankings in the element games?

I realize everything Mikos has done so far has been carefully calculated, intentional. Down to his mate bond with Lana.

And watching him now, I can see that Mikos knows he's already won, in more ways than one.

Even if he loses the final stage, Everdale has secured its rank. His influence will remain untouched and the rumours of Alpha Rich's acts tainting his reputation will be buried underneath the glory of the games.

Mikos...he has played his cards well.

My fists clench at my sides.

  • Hunted By My Mate; Craved By The Alpha Supreme    A Call From The Council

~AlaricThe atmosphere in the study is tense. My elbows rest on the table, fingers crossed, as the envoy of the Werewolf Council on screen, concludes his report."Two are dead."The words hang between us, weighty, impossibly so.I breathe in carefully, my eyes narrow as I absorb this information. One of the top ten alphas ranked in the element games had been discovered with his throat ripped apart, his corpse dumped in the river like refuse. Another, also ranked top ten in the element games was discovered in his own bed, with his heart removed from his chest and left, respectfully, by his side on the bed.A message. A threat. The element games have always been a brutal display of power and a fight for survival, but this...this was different.Assassinations. And whoever was carrying them out was accurate."You think this is targeted," I state, my voice even, but there is an edge to it, a storm brewing beneath the surface. The envoy nodded. "The pattern suggests that they're killing th

  • Hunted By My Mate; Craved By The Alpha Supreme    Doesn't Feel Right

The smell of charred earth fills the air, a blend of burned grass and smoke, it envelopes me as I shift in place, adjusting my stance. The rooftop training room of the Silver Tower is well equipped, more than any I have ever seen. Not that I have seen much since I did not really live in the Everdale pack house, but my point remains valid. It is late afternoon, the sun burning across the open space is harsh.Across the room, dozens of targets are lined, some still standing, others smoldering pieces of my past attempts.Sweat pours from my temple, and I wipe it down with my sleeve, curling my fingers as the flame crackles to life between them. It comes too easily now, answering my call without hesitation. That should comfort me. Instead, it unsettles me, my lack of control becomes even more apparent."Again."Alaric's quiet voice carries over the space between us. He is a step or two away, his arms crossed, his eyes fixed on me.I inhale deeply, rolling my shoulders, and then I concent

  • Hunted By My Mate; Craved By The Alpha Supreme    Look Closely

I followed Alaric in silence as we deviated from the well-trod path, the jungle closing around us grows denser, wilder. The ground was soft, littered with leaves, and the rich scent of soil. The late afternoon sunlight dapples from the canopy above, lighting Alaric's broad back in shifting light and casting long shadows over the path.I don't even ask where we are going. Something in the way he moves, with a stillness, and measured steps holds me back and bids me to just follow. The sound of the crashing waves become fainter with each step forward as we travel deeper into the island, our steps drowned out by the endless hum of sea breeze. The further we go, the more untamed the land appears, as though we have travelled through time to a forgotten world. And suddenly, just when I imagine that we will never get to the end of this path, the trees part. There is a small wooden structure, half-overgrown with creeping ivy. It is not exactly a ruin, but tipping the scales at that. And from

  • Hunted By My Mate; Craved By The Alpha Supreme    A Replacement

"Alaric has lost a child before. You must understand. He will be careful...too careful. Because the last time..." She trails off, as if realising she has said too much. Her eyes soften as she watches my expression, but the damage has been done.I did not think I know everything there is to know about Alaric, but I also cannot have imagined that there is even more tying Carla and I together. Not only do I look exactly like her, I'm in the exact same state she was when she died. Carrying the child of her mate. The firelight outside flickers, but the warmth has been sucked from the air, replaced with something colder, heavier.I can still hear the distant hum of voices, Alaric's among them. He has no notion what is being said here, in this small, dimly lit room where the weight of his past has just been deposited on my shoulders.I can hardly breathe.Alaric's mate died carrying his child. And now here I am.A replacement.I barely hear Maggie's voice beside me, offering reassurances I c

  • Hunted By My Mate; Craved By The Alpha Supreme    A Taste Of Home

The aroma of meat roasting over a slow fire and broth bubbling curls through the air, wrapping around me like an unseen rope, pulling me forward towards the little wooden house in the midst of the rows of much the same structure that make up the settled. Warm, unguarded laughter echoes within, in bright contrast to the salty wind that comes in from the shoreline.Alaric walks beside me, his steps unhurried. A faint stain of berry juice marks his thumb, leftovers from our earlier snacking."Took them long enough," he mutters, a mischievous smile tugging at his lips as he wipes his hand on his pants. I stare at him, puzzled. "For what?""For the invitation," he says, nodding toward the house. "I was beginning to think they'd leave us to starve on their island. And I promised you a meal while counting on their kindness."The door swings open before I can respond, and a broad-chested man with lines of laughter carved into his face stands in the doorway. His grin is wide, eyes wrinkling a

  • Hunted By My Mate; Craved By The Alpha Supreme    Heart Of The Island

The island is different today, softer... almost expectant. The announcement that the element games had ended should have lifted the lingering tension, yet it feels like something unseen still clings to the atmosphere. It might be just me, my company seems to be perfectly unbothered in his own little world.Alaric has said little since we left the beach house, only that there is somewhere he wants to take me.The wind is heavy with salt, and a gust lifts my hair as I follow him down a winding dirt road, cutting through the middle of an overgrown forest. The terrain shifts the deeper into the island we venture, farther and farther away from the arena and the parts of the island reserved for the games. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and ripe fruit and the sounds of waves crashing against the beach becomes more and more distinct.Another distinct sound soon rises to meet it... laughter. Soft, innocent giggles of excitement... I can only guess it's coming from children. And
