~Kyra
The bell at the entrance of the Cafe dings lightly, signalling the arrival of a patron.
I do not need to glance up to know who it is, Lana's scent is one I am completely familiar with and the moment the cafe doors open, I can identify the arriving guest.
She is finally here, after three days, but what is she here for? I cannot be certain of that.
I can hear her footsteps as she approaches the counter, I keep my eyes fixed on the coffee maker as I attend an order for the table at the end of the Cafe,
The quiet scoff from Hailey, though barely audible does not escape my notice, I can picture in my mind's eye the disdainful look Hailey has on her face, she has never really liked Lana for reasons I am yet to completely understand,
Hailey had put ideas in my mind, drawing my mind to previous events when Lana had hinted at my crush on Alpha Mikos, and how my eyes turned dreamy whenever he showed up on the news,
Hailey had hinted that perhaps Lana had been intimate with Alpha Mikos knowing that there was a possibility that he would be my mate,
I would never believe such and Hailey, well, she was human and did not really understand how these things worked.
And because she was my friend, it was only natural that she was suspicious of the 'other woman'.
"Little Kay," Lana called to me fondly as she arrives at the counter.
"Hey Lans." I murmur, my voice barely a whisper, even at this moment the thought lingers,
'Had Lana known I had witnessed it or was she ignorant to it all?'
'Did she know who Mikos was to me or was I letting Hailey get to me?'
"Kyra, hurry up with the order!" Hailey calls to me, her tone tight.
My response is a quiet hum, but I do not fail to notice the subtle sneer Lana passes Hailey's way, even Hailey would fail to notice it, but I wasn't human and so I saw.
"Little Kay, I hate it when you're too busy to pay attention to me. My usual, join me at the booth in a bit, yes?" Lana says, in a sweet tone, her lips pouting childishly.
"Sure. Just a moment." I respond,
As Lana leaves, I feel Hailey's glare boring a hole through my head but I once again ignore it.
If I looked at Hailey again, I might break down crying even before confirming if Lana had any knowledge of what had happened three days ago,
I wrap up with the orders I have pending and quickly fix Lana's coffee and one for myself too, before taking off the apron and heading for Lana's usual booth whenever she comes to visit my workplace,
"I still cannot understand why you insist on staying in such a place." Lana spoke first, the moment she knew I was within hearing range to pick up on her words.
Saying nothing, I pass her her coffee and take a seat, placing mine down in front of me, I took a sip of mine and Lana did the same exclaiming just a moment later,
"Ah, that's hot!"
I glance blankly down at the coffee in my hand before glancing back at Lana who still had a small frown on her face.
"I still cannot understand your resistance to heat. This is much too hot, we should let it cool for a bit." Lana suggests.
I take another small sip of my coffee, despite Lana's words and only then do I put mine down and pose a simple question,
"Lans, why have you come?" I ask,
I know Lana well enough, if not nudged, she would beat around the bush for a long time.
"Why? I cannot pay my little cousin a visit anymore? Do you know how tasking it was to shake off the reporters on my trail to make some time to come see you?" Lana questioned,
I breathe a quiet sigh, I know Lana's words are true, while I was a she-wolf who doubles as a barista in the city, my cousin Lana is a well accomplished socialite.
"I know, it is why I do not want you seen around these parts. It would not be good for your image, if you were photographed here." I murmur,
"You can be here and I can't?" Lana asks, with a roll of her eyes,
"If you do not want me coming around here as often as I do then you should not be here." Lana points out,
"We have a home in the choicest part of the city and yet here you are in a no-name cafe, working for meagre human pay whilst sharing a room with some human girl." Lana adds,
'You have a home.' I am tempted to correct, but I hold myself back as I often did.
"Well, you're done with college now, you no longer have any excuses to avoid pack interactions and carry on mingling with only humans."
"Dad wants you to know that he has found you a befitting job in Alpha Mikos's corporation. You should make plans to come back home, we've all had enough of......this." Lana said, her eyes scanning the cafe, a sneer on her lips.
Lana's words are not unexpected. After college, members of the pack were supposed to find employment in pack-affiliated corporations, rather than human establishments.
But more than Lana's words, I find myself more fixated at the mention of that name 'Alpha Mikos'.
As if on cue, a familiar voice blares from the small television, speaking on civil rights and other such governing affairs,
That charismatic voice belongs to the District Attorney, Mikos Landry, but to all shifters on these lands, he is the respected Alpha Mikos, Alpha wolf of this territory.
"You still drool over Mikos I see." Lana comments,
Her words draw me back to the event Hailey had hinted at, it was a situation like this and her words that day had been,
"You do not show interest in people, our kind and humans alike. If you ask me, I would bet a million bucks that Mikos is your mate." She had said then,
I finally dare a glance straight into Lana's eyes, and all I see is the usual teasing look, does this mean she knows nothing?
If she knew nothing, then how was I to break it to her that the man she was involved with was my mate?
Lana is the golden girl of our pack, literally, with her head of platinum blonde tresses whereas I....well I don't really know what I am.
"Tonight, an exclusive gala will be held in honor of Mikos's 28th year. Of course, all of our pack and many more honored guests of our kind will be in attendance. Dad wants you there... you know his patience is running thin." Lana reminds me.
She reaches into her purse and pulls out an invitation card, sliding it to me across the table.
"Come home earlier, your dress was delivered to your room already. I have to be on my way now, I have an interview to catch." Lana adds as she gets to her feet.
She reaches over and ruffles my hair fondly before strutting out. Once Lana is gone, I pick up the invitation card with shaky hands.
"Mikos invites you to the annual Moon Gala..." The invitation reads in bold, black and glossy lettering.
For me, this means one thing I had dreaded... I will have to face Mikos again.
The Red Ember City is vastly different from Everdale. Unlike Everdale's array of high tech, sky rise buildings and corporate lifestyle, more common in Red Ember are vast ranches, low end bars and Victorian styled mansions with a much more laid back atmosphere.Red Ember City is considered a political concern to Everdale as it is not governed by a DA but a Sheriff and has never supported Everdale's political landscape.The population in Red Ember City is also different, numbering to just a quarter of Everdale's population which matches the small size of the city, Red Ember City is largely populated by unique shifters with an almost nonexistent human population.Just like Everdale, the humans in Red Ember City live unaware to the fact that they are surrounded by shifters all around.Our destination is one of the few prominent structures in Red Ember City, a towering building with minimalist designs. The street leading up to it is tarred, unlike the more common dirt roads and the name pl
"Tech... what the fuck is this?!" Top hisses as the anchor moved onto other breaking news."We stopped all law enforcement drones from capturing anything but we failed to take note of personal drones this far out in the shadowed woods. The image was uploaded last night and went viral in just a few minutes. It will be too suspicious to take it down now." Tech reports in a grim tone."I do not want to hear excuses! Keeping Lycan affairs out of human technology is your duty! Is this how you do your job?!" Top snarled."The image barely reveals anything, Cedric. It should be fine..." Sera tries to reason with a fuming Top."Nothing but the suspicion it elicits! Suspicion breeds curiosity, curiosity is the curse of humans! In no time, they will flood the shaded woods in search of evidence, adventure or a damned arsonist!" Top snarls.Top's words are true and worrisome, but they still are the least of my worries. The words Mikos said resonates in my mind repeatedly and my stomach knots in t
The first streak of daylight reflects against my eyelids and my eyes slowly flutter open. The first sensation I become aware of is the dull ache in my sex, reminding me of the events from the night before.My eyes are itchy from the tears, the only thing that had finally softened Alaric's heart to let me cum after taking me twice in succession.It is difficult to get out of my head the force of pleasure that followed the long awaited climax and I breathe a quiet sigh.The weight of Alaric's hand over my waist is the second thing I take note of. I expected to wake up to an empty bed, but Alaric's soft breaths against my neck tells me my expectation was wrong.Turning my head slightly, heat rushes up to my cheeks to find Alaric is completely naked, having kicked off the duvet and his morning wood is visible in all its glory.It is difficult to fathom how Alaric can still be aroused after the events from the night before, but his deep sleep testifies to the fact that he is also exhausted
As suddenly as it had come, the flames extinguish itself, leaving me without the only barrier of protection I had.The mania is visible in Alaric's eyes even before it takes hold of him once again. His brows furrow slightly, as though confused by his words from a moment ago and then his eyes narrow, In that moment, everything returned to exactly where he left off. But there is a flicker in his eyes, one I do not fail to recognize... arousal?Warmth pools in my lower belly, against my better judgement and even my will, my body reacts to Alaric's desire.Alaric leans in close to me, his nose grazing my neck, his hard chest brushes against mine, the fabric of his shirt graze my nipples and I bite back a quiet whimper."You are not her!" Alaric hisses darkly, his fingers enclose around my exposed throat, claws grazing my skin.A little pressure... just a little, and I would be dead."No... I am not..." I admit with difficulty.I only look similar to the deceased Luna supreme, I can never
Strange black markings line the walls on both sides of the hallway that leads up to the familiar double doors, the black markings line the doors also, forming intricate patterns that twist unnaturally in the faint light.None of those had been there before, I note. The doors are slightly parted, and I hesitate for a moment but Top's voice is in my head again and I push aside my hesitation.The moment I cross the threshold, the doors slam shut behind me with a deafening finality. It is not the first time this is happening but the terror that creeps up my spine is just as potent as the previous times.I resist the urge to spin around and tug at the handle, I already know the doors will not budge.Unlike the dim lighting the other times, the room is completely dark, every semblance of light banished.My eyes still struggle to adjust when a low growl from deeper within the room greets me. Panic rises up my throat like bile and I distantly wonder if Silver Tech would turn on the lights if
~~~~~~Kyra's Dream~~~~Smoke...gray and thick, so thick I can barely see ahead of me. The world around me is consumed by it, a choking haze. My eyes are itchy and watering, and my throat is sore and scratchy. The smoke claws at my lungs and stings my eyes. My breath is ragged and shallow, the acrid smell of burning wood and charred earth filling my nostrils.My vision is a blur of shifting shadows, and no matter where I turn, the smoke only seems to grow thicker, obscuring everything.'How long have I been stuck in the mist of all this smoke? And where did it all come from?'Attempting a step forward proves to be a bad idea. The air around me feels alive, oppressive, pressing down me like a living thing, it makes every movement heavier, every step sluggish.My heart pounds anxiously within my chest, panic quickly builds up as I struggle to make sense of my surroundings. There was neither light to serve as a guide or even a flicker of flame to indicate the source of the fire.Other th
"I didn't mean to... I swear... I didn't mean to set a fire..." My eyes snap open just as a sob crawls up my throat. Breathing heavily, I scan my environment, a sigh of relief escapes me to see I am still in the cabin, on the couch where I intended to keep watch but had somehow drifted off to sleep.Looking over at Alaric to assess his condition, I find his eyes are open and staring straight at me.He's conscious, and from the look of it, he has been for a good while. How long did I sleep for?Alaric's gaze on me is unsettling, his expression is unreadable and his eyes reveal no emotions. I cannot tell if I have again incurred his wrath or something worse.The silence is oppressive and I fidget uneasily before breaking it. "Are...are you still in pain?"Alaric does not respond immediately and just when I believe he does not plan to respond, he finally speaks. "The locket." Two words, a cold demand.I blink, staring at Alaric in confusion for a moment and Alaric stares back at me, hi
The wildfire draws closer, flames consuming everything in its path as it stalks the cabin, slowly but surely.In no time, the cabin will be consumed in flames and there will be no way out. Yet, I wait for Alaric's return, pacing anxiously at the porch whilst keeping a wary gaze on the flames.'What is taking him so long?' Another glance at the flames and my heart shrivels within my chest, memories of the blaze I ignited at the Moon gala keep flashing through my mind, tormenting me with an overwhelming guilt.The fire will not harm me, this much is true. But I fear it... I cannot help but be terrified of it, and I am losing confidence in being able to guide Alaric to safety if he does not come out soon.A loud crash from within the cabin alarms me and I dash into the cabin, my eyes going wide.Despite my careful watch, the flames had escaped my notice. Seeping in from the windows at the back of the cabin, the kitchen area and a part of the sitting room is already up in flames.My eyes
"Cedric! You can't make it through this blaze!" Sera anxiously deters her mate.Top's mind is clearly made up, the thought of Alaric in the midst of the wildfire banishes all sense of self preservation. "My element is water. I'm the only one who stands a chance and I have to get Alaric!" My eyes are wide and horrified, staring at the fire and it takes me a moment before I recall something. "I'll go.""I said I'll go!" I yell this time, effectively drawing their attention.All eyes turn to me at that moment, including Top who has a fierce glare in his eyes. "Now is not the time for games, Kyra." His tone is tight.The sight of the fire stirs something familiar in me and I suck in a sharp breath, hoping and praying that for the first time I actually dare to reach for it, it answers.My eyes go closed and it takes a moment but soon, I feel a familiar heat spreading through me and I open my eyes to find my fists are lit up in bright flames.This time, the eyes on me are shocked. "The fir
