Chapter 2

Author: Beef Burger Lover
“Even if you look down on me, how can you ignore the baby’s safety?! If something happens to the child I’m carrying, how will you answer Mrs. Shaw Sr.? Don’t forget. You’re here to take care of me!”

Mrs. Zane finally stopped when she heard my threat. After a moment, her impatient voice came from outside the door.

“I’ll call Mr. Shaw now. If he says you can’t go, it won’t be my fault when Mrs. Shaw Sr. asks.”

I nodded frantically, pressing myself against the door as I waited for her to make the call.

“Mr. Shaw, Mrs. Shaw says she’s bleeding and about to give birth. Should we take her to the hospital?”

Adrian had just finished ordering when he got Mrs. Zane’s call. His expression darkened with irritation as he snapped coldly, “Mrs. Zane, do you not want this job anymore?! I told you to keep an eye on her, not to plead on her behalf!”

Mrs. Zane’s face fell as she was scolded. She shot an annoyed glance at the basement door.

Suddenly, she noticed the blood seeping out through the crack beneath it. Her face turned deathly pale, and she screamed and trembled, “Blood… Blood! Mr. Shaw! She might be telling the truth. She’s bleeding! There’s so much blood coming out from under the door!”

Adrian froze for a moment, his hand clutching the phone frozen. After a tense moment of silence, he finally spoke, though his voice was hesitant.

“Wait for me…”

In a daze, I heard Evan’s childish voice come through the phone, cutting off both what Adrian was about to say and my last thread of hope.

“Dad, I want some ice cream.”

Adrian turned his head.

Sue held the child in her arms and gave him a gentle look. “Adrian, is it Elena?

“Today is Evan’s birthday. Is she upset that you’re celebrating for him, so she’s making excuses to get you to go back? It's just like last time, when she stopped you from attending his parent-teacher meeting.

“It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t insisted on keeping this child, Evan wouldn’t be mocked at school for not having a father.”

Adrian’s heart softened when he saw Sue on the verge of tears.

Evan ran over and threw himself into his arms, looking up at him with pleading eyes.

“Dad, can you stay and celebrate my birthday with me? This is my first birthday with you. Before, it was always just Mom. Everyone laughed at me for not having a dad…”

Adrian bent down and held him tightly. He looked at Sue with eyes filled with tenderness and concern, and said,

“I promised I’d celebrate with you, and I’ll keep that promise. No matter what happens today, nothing is more important than Evan’s birthday.”

Sue broke into a smile through her tears.

“Adrian, thank you.”

Outside the door, Mrs. Zane dared not say another word.

As I listened to his voice through the phone, the last bit of strength I had been holding onto finally gave out. My body slid slowly down against the door.

Just before I lost consciousness, I heard Adrian’s final instructions to Mrs. Zane.

“Mrs. Zane, I don’t have time to come back. I’ll call Dr. Cady to go to the house and check on her. Elena has a habit of lying. When Dr. Cady arrives, please follow his instructions. I don’t want you letting her go on your own. Make sure she’s properly cared for.”

I had a habit of lying?

The moment before I blacked out, tears slipped from my tightly shut eyes.

This was how I truly appeared in Adrian’s eyes. He did not trust me in the slightest.

At the time of Evan’s parent-teacher meeting, I did call him while he was on his way to school, but that was only because the baby had kicked for the first time. I merely wanted to share the moment with him right away.

Adrian’s face twisted with hurt at my words as he pulled me tightly into his arms. “Elena, how could I ever hurt you? I love you so much. I could never let you suffer even a little.”I shoved him away with all my strength and yelled, “Then why did you come here?! Don’t you realize you’re a wanted man?!”He nodded, acknowledging it. Then, he fixed me with a desperate, longing gaze.“Elena, you’ve never liked Sue, right? She’s dead now. Evan has been sent to an orphanage. No one can stand in the way of our love anymore.“I came here for you. Everything I did was all for you, to avenge our baby! If not for Sue, I wouldn’t have misunderstood you. Our baby wouldn’t have died! We can be a happy family again!”His words sent a chill crawling through my body. I took a step back, then another. He grabbed my arm and continued, “Don’t worry. I’ve sold off all my assets and changed my identity. No one knows us here. We can return to the life we once had.”A wave of nausea and disgust rose i

The paint had long dried up, nearly all gone. Only a thin residue remained in the bucket, and the basement smelled only of blood, nothing else.It was clear just how much pain I had endured that night, and yet Adrian had refused my cries for help again and again, even pushing our child closer to death. When he saw the medicine bottles in the room, Adrian seemed desperate to confirm something and called Dr. Cady.“What’s in these bottles? Were they drugs to induce labor?”Dr. Cady hesitated for a moment before answering, “Mr. Shaw, this is folic acid—a common supplement for pregnant women.”Adrian’s straight back finally collapsed. He clawed at his hair, overcome with despair. What had he done? He had killed his own child!Dr. Cady, frightened by his wild state, fled the villa immediately.Adrian tied Mrs. Zane up in the basement and forced her to confess when she supposedly saw me secretly buy labor-inducing drugs and when I supposedly swapped the medicine.Mrs. Zane was terrif

“Elena… What you said… It’s not true, right? You’re lying to me again, aren't you? Isn’t that it? Say something!”I looked at Adrian as he lost control. I raised my hand and slapped him hard across the face and yelled, “Adrian! Take a closer look. Who do you think is lying there?! That’s the child you abandoned the night before! The one you refused to let be born!“The baby was fighting to come into this world, struggling to live! But not only did you refuse to take me to the hospital, you even locked me in the basement!”Adrian turned to the side. Inside the small coffin lay a tiny, bloodied child. His legs gave out, and he collapsed to his knees. The blow was too much. His mind shattered, grief crashing over him as he began to break down.“You’re lying to me. You have to be lying… You’re lying…”He tried to get up, but his legs would not obey. He could only crawl forward on his knees. Just as he was about to reach the child, I yanked his hand away.I glared at him. Fury blazed

“Tomorrow, 9:00 am, Green Hill Cemetery. It’s your last chance to see the child.”Then, I turned around and walked away. Adrian tried to stop me and demand an explanation, but seven or eight bodyguards closed in from all sides, blocking him where he stood.Even as Esmond watched him get shoved back into his car in the pouring rain, disheveled and humiliated, he was still not satisfied. “Elena, you’re just going to let him off like that? And you're even letting him see the baby one last time?”I stared out at the dark night beyond the window. My fists were clenched tight. “He’s the child’s father. He deserves to know the truth. As for letting him off?“He should spend the rest of his life repenting. He should wake up in the dead of night, unable to sleep at the thought of our dead child. He should drown in regret for the rest of his days.“How could I ever let him off?”…Dark clouds filled the sky above Green Hill Cemetery, and the rain only grew heavier, showing no sign of stop

“Are you saying Elena got into another man’s car with my child and didn’t leave me a single word?”Adrian asked in disbelief.Francis lowered his head. Sweat dripped down his face like beads. He did not even dare wipe it away as he answered cautiously,“Yes, I was blocked by a man. Mrs. Shaw didn’t say a word. She just got into the car holding a box.”Adrian’s expression darkened. He threw the tulips in his hand to the ground. His voice was low and cold.“Pull the surveillance footage. Track the license plate! I want her to be found within a day.”After being brought home, I sat there in a daze, staring at the urn on the sofa, unable to speak for a long time.Unable to stop my thoughts from spiraling, I asked Esmond in a soft voice,“Esmond, do you think the baby will be scared, walking that road alone? Will she blame me for not protecting her?”He froze for a moment, then pulled me into his arms, carefully studying my expression before saying gently,“Elena, let’s bury her b

At last, he turned back, pulled me into his arms, and gently patted my head. “It’s okay, Elena. You’re okay. I’m here.”In the middle of the night, Adrian suddenly heard the cry of a child in his sleep. He opened his eyes and instinctively turned his head. Evan was curled up quietly beside him, fast asleep. After tucking the blanket around him, an inexplicable unease rose in his chest, making it impossible to fall back asleep. He lit a cigarette and checked his phone. There was not a single message. As he recalled the unknown calls he had declined earlier that day, a surge of panic ignited in his chest like a raging fire. Elena’s face flashed through his mind as he dialed Dr. Cady's number.“Dr. Cady, how is my wife doing?”“Mrs. Shaw? Mr. Shaw, wasn’t she taken to the hospital by ambulance for delivery? When I arrived at the villa, the ambulance had just left. I thought I was too late and you had already called emergency services!”Adrian paused for a moment, then shot up from h
