Chapter 1

Author: Beef Burger Lover
I was eight months pregnant when my water broke—the same day as the birthday of my husband’s adopted son, Evan Shaw.

To keep my child from being born on the same day as his adopted son, he forced me to wait until after midnight. He refused to take me to the hospital and locked me in the basement.

Adrian Shaw looked down at me. His eyes were dark and hostile.

“Elena, you're really good at picking the timing, huh? Of all days, you had to go into labor on Evan’s birthday.”

I lay on the damp ground, my dress soaked with water, begging him to take me to the hospital because I could feel the baby couldn't wait to come out—it might be dangerous if I didn't give birth soon.

A trace of disappointment flashed across his eyes, and his voice turned cold. “You’re still trying to lie to me? I asked a doctor. Even if your water breaks, you don’t give birth right away. Some women don’t deliver for three days.

“All this scheming just to secure your position as Mrs. Shaw, so your child can compete with Evan for his birthday and his place. You've really thought this through.”

I took a deep breath as despair washed over me. “The baby I’m carrying is yours too! Adrian, I’m begging you. Please, for the child’s sake. As long as the baby is safe, I promise I’ll never show up in front of you again.”

His expression darkened. He bent down, grabbed my chin, and replied harshly, “Don’t play games with me.

“As long as you stay here quietly until after midnight, I’ll take you to the hospital. Once the baby’s born, you can finally use the child to secure your place and truly marry into the Shaw family.”

Then, he rose to his feet and turned to leave.

My pale hand clung tightly to his pant leg. I refused to let go. I tilted my bloodless face up at him and begged again, “Please… take me to the hospital.”

Adrian let out a cold laugh and kicked my hand away. Without a second thought, he turned and locked the door. His icy voice came from outside.

“Mrs. Zane, keep an eye on her. Don’t let her out without my permission.”

That kick sent me crashing hard to the ground.

Instinctively, I protected my stomach, but in the next second, a warm flow spread beneath me. I looked down. The pure white fabric of my dress was slowly blooming red.

I struggled forward, inch by inch, dragging myself across the floor and leaving a long trail of blood behind me. Summoning what little strength I had left, I crawled to the door and pounded on it with my fist.

“Mrs. Zane! Mrs. Zane, I’m bleeding! Please, let me out. It hurts so much. I think I’m about to give birth!”

Mrs. Zane pressed her ear against the door, listening to the sounds inside. Then, she rolled her eyes and replied mockingly, “Mrs. Shaw, stop putting on an act. Mr. Shaw already gave instructions. If I let you out, they’ll dock my pay. You can’t make things hard for someone like me.

“Alright, stop yelling. It’s all your fault anyway. The birthday party we spent so long preparing can’t even be held at home now. After Evan finishes celebrating, he’ll be back for the cake I’m making. I don’t have time to waste here with you.”

I clutched my clothes. The pain in my abdomen grew sharper and more unbearable.

When I heard that she was about to leave, panic finally overwhelmed me. I shouted after her, “Mrs. Zane! Don’t go! I’m really about to give birth! I know you can’t make the decision, but just call Adrian for me. I’m bleeding a lot. If I don’t get to the hospital now, the baby might not make it!”

Adrian’s face twisted with hurt at my words as he pulled me tightly into his arms. “Elena, how could I ever hurt you? I love you so much. I could never let you suffer even a little.”I shoved him away with all my strength and yelled, “Then why did you come here?! Don’t you realize you’re a wanted man?!”He nodded, acknowledging it. Then, he fixed me with a desperate, longing gaze.“Elena, you’ve never liked Sue, right? She’s dead now. Evan has been sent to an orphanage. No one can stand in the way of our love anymore.“I came here for you. Everything I did was all for you, to avenge our baby! If not for Sue, I wouldn’t have misunderstood you. Our baby wouldn’t have died! We can be a happy family again!”His words sent a chill crawling through my body. I took a step back, then another. He grabbed my arm and continued, “Don’t worry. I’ve sold off all my assets and changed my identity. No one knows us here. We can return to the life we once had.”A wave of nausea and disgust rose i

The paint had long dried up, nearly all gone. Only a thin residue remained in the bucket, and the basement smelled only of blood, nothing else.It was clear just how much pain I had endured that night, and yet Adrian had refused my cries for help again and again, even pushing our child closer to death. When he saw the medicine bottles in the room, Adrian seemed desperate to confirm something and asked Dr. Cady.“What’s in these bottles? Were they drugs to induce labor?”Dr. Cady hesitated for a moment before answering, “Mr. Shaw, this is folic acid—a common supplement for pregnant women.”Adrian’s straight back finally collapsed. He clawed at his hair, overcome with despair. What had he done? He had killed his own child!Dr. Cady, frightened by his wild state, fled the villa immediately.Adrian tied Mrs. Zane up in the basement and forced her to confess when she supposedly saw me secretly buy labor-inducing drugs and when I supposedly swapped the medicine.Mrs. Zane was terrifi

“Elena… What you said… It’s not true, right? You’re lying to me again, aren't you? Isn’t that it? Say something!”I looked at Adrian as he lost control. I raised my hand and slapped him hard across the face and yelled, “Adrian! Take a closer look. Who do you think is lying there?! That’s the child you abandoned! The one you refused to let be born!“The baby was fighting to come into this world, struggling to live! But not only did you refuse to take me to the hospital, you even locked me in the basement!”Adrian turned to the side. Inside the small coffin lay a tiny, bloodied child. His legs gave out, and he collapsed to his knees. The blow was too much. His mind shattered, grief crashing over him as he began to break down.“You’re lying to me. You have to be lying… You’re lying…”He tried to get up, but his legs would not obey. He could only crawl forward on his knees. Just as he was about to reach the child, I yanked his hand away.I glared at him. Fury blazed in my eyes. I hat

“Tomorrow, 9:00 am, Green Hill Cemetery. It’s your last chance to see the child.”Then, I turned around and walked away. Adrian tried to stop me and demand an explanation, but seven or eight bodyguards closed in from all sides, blocking him where he stood.Even as Esmond watched him get shoved back into his car in the pouring rain, disheveled and humiliated, he was still not satisfied. “Elena, you’re just going to let him off like that? And you're even letting him see the baby one last time?”I stared out at the dark night beyond the window. My fists were clenched tight. “He’s the child’s father. He deserves to know the truth. As for letting him off?“He should spend the rest of his life repenting. He should wake up in the dead of night, unable to sleep at the thought of our dead child. He should drown in regret for the rest of his days.“How could I ever let him off?”…Dark clouds filled the sky above Green Hill Cemetery, and the rain only grew heavier, showing no sign of stop

“Are you saying Elena got into another man’s car with my child and didn’t leave me a single word?”Adrian asked in disbelief.Francis lowered his head. Sweat dripped down his face like beads. He did not even dare wipe it away as he answered cautiously, “Yes, I was blocked by a man. Mrs. Shaw didn’t say a word. She just got into the car holding a box.”Adrian’s expression darkened. He threw the tulips in his hand to the ground. His voice was low and cold.“Pull the surveillance footage. Track the license plate! I want her to be found within a day.”After being brought home, I sat there in a daze, staring at the urn on the sofa, unable to speak for a long time.Unable to stop my thoughts from spiraling, I asked Esmond, my eldest brother, in a soft voice, “Esmond, do you think the baby will be scared, walking that road alone? Will she blame me for not protecting her?”He froze for a moment, then pulled me into his arms, carefully studying my expression before saying gently, “Elena,

In the middle of the night, Adrian suddenly heard the cry of a child in his sleep. He opened his eyes and instinctively turned his head. Evan was curled up quietly beside him, fast asleep. After tucking the blanket around him, an inexplicable unease rose in his chest, making it impossible to fall back asleep. He lit a cigarette and checked his phone. There was not a single message. As he recalled the unknown calls he had declined earlier that day, a surge of panic ignited in his chest like a raging fire. My face flashed through his mind as he dialed Dr. Cady's number.“Dr. Cady, how is my wife doing?”“Mrs. Shaw? Mr. Shaw, wasn’t she taken to the hospital by ambulance for delivery? When I arrived at the villa, the ambulance had just left. I thought I was too late and you had already called emergency services!”Adrian paused for a moment, then shot up from his chair. There was a flicker of excitement in his voice.“You mean she’s already given birth?! No wonder I heard a baby cryi
