Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
"Raven, shut your mouth!" Fred finally snapped. Like an enraged bull, he charged past the two security guards and lunged at me.

Unfortunately for him, before he could even touch me, I drove my foot straight into his stomach. I was wearing four-inch heels, and I didn't hold back in the slightest.

Fred let out a muffled groan, dropping to his knees while clutching his stomach, his face twisted in pain.

A collective gasp swept through the room. No one had expected that I, the usual gentle, soft-spoken boss' wife, could hit this hard.

I looked down at him, my eyes imperious and cold. "Fred, we've been married for three years. You know exactly how much I've given for you, for our family, and for this company. I used to think that people had a heart and a conscience, that you would see everything I've done for you. But now, I understand that you're utterly heartless."

I turned away from him and focused on Winnie, who looked completely petrified. On the big screen behind me, the slides changed again. This time, it showed a series of disgusting chat logs.

It was Winnie bragging to her best friend.

"Getting a man to fall for you is easy. Just whisper the right things in bed, and he'll do whatever you say. All that old hag Raven does is work. No wonder she's being neglected—she totally deserves it.

"Fred told me that once the company's stable, he'll divorce her. Once that happens, I'll be the proper Mrs. Fred Colson. In fact, he bought me another bag today. It's the latest Hermès!"

Below that were all kinds of photos of the luxury gifts she'd gotten, along with selfies taken in different hotel rooms. In the background, Fred's clothes or his signature Patek Philippe watch were always in view.

The evidence was overwhelming. There was no room for denial.

Winnie let out a piercing scream and buried her face in her hands, wishing a hole would open up in the ground and swallow her whole.

The curses rising from the crowd grew even harsher.

"She's shameless! And she actually thinks being the other woman is something to brag about!"

"Trash like that thinks she can be the boss' wife? Dream on!"

"She's a disgrace to all women!"

I watched Winnie's meltdown with relish, but there wasn't the slightest sense of satisfaction in me. I used to believe Fred and I were some kind of campus fairy-tale couple who'd made it in the real world.

We started from nothing and built everything side by side. But I'd forgotten that once some men had money, they couldn't help turning rotten. It was as if it were etched into their bones.

"Ms. Lane, you really do deserve this award. The prize is all these glorious chat records that will make you 'go down in history.' I'll have them printed, framed, and hung right above your desk so you can admire your achievements every single day," I said.

Winnie jolted violently. Then, she lifted her head and glared at me with pure venom. "You're vicious, Raven! You'll meet a horrible end!"

I laughed. "I don't know whether that will happen, but I do know one thing—your good days are over."

Just then, the doors to the banquet hall swung open from the outside. Several uniformed police officers walked in.

"Who called the police?"

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance. The last trace of color drained from Fred's and Winnie's faces.

I set the microphone down and slowly stepped off the stage. "Officers, I'm the one who called. There's someone here suspected of embezzlement. It's a large amount."

I pointed at Malcolm, who was sprawled on the floor. The officers went over and cuffed him on the spot.

He burst into tears and shouted, "Winnie, Fred! Help me! Please!"

Winnie tried to rush over to him, but the police stopped her. "Ma'am, as his family member and someone involved in the case, we'll need you to come with us to assist in the investigation as well."

Another officer walked toward Fred.

Fred struggled to his feet, forcing himself upright and barking in a shaky, brittle voice, "What do you think you're doing? Do you know who I am? I'm the owner of this company!"

The officer didn't even bat an eye as he showed his badge. "Mr. Colson, we have reason to believe you're connected to an economic crime. We need you to cooperate with our investigation."

Fred completely lost it. He stared at me, his eyes full of terror and disbelief. "Raven, you set me up!"

I sauntered toward him and stopped in front of him, looking him straight in the eye. "Set you up? No. All I did was lay out every single thing you've done. Oh, by the way, we still haven't given out the third award."

I pulled a document out of my clutch and slapped it against his chest.

"The Best Traitor Award goes to you, Fred Colson. The prize is…" I paused for dramatic effect, "a divorce agreement and a property settlement that leaves you with absolutely nothing."

I saw Fred again on the day of the hearing. He'd lost weight, and he looked haggard. The once spirited CEO of a company now sat slumped in his seat, his gaze shifty. His lawyer was still putting up a dying struggle, trying to claim that everything we owned after getting married, including my 70% stake in the company, counted as marital property and should be split in half.My attorney, though, was Rita Ford, known in the industry as the Goddess of Divorce. She didn't even spare the opposing counsel a glance as she placed a thick stack of documents in front of the judge, her movements steady and unhurried."Your Honor, this is the prenuptial agreement between my client and Mr. Colson, notarized by a top law firm. The agreement clearly states that 70% of the shares belong to my client as her separate, premarital property. Any income generated from those shares is also hers alone."These are the bank records of my client's investments in the company. The funds came from her parents an

Once the funding issue was settled, Fred's little scheme completely fell apart. He probably never imagined that my connections and influence went far beyond anything he'd pictured. He started getting anxious. The court's notice of hearing came. It was scheduled for a week later. The day before the hearing, Connie showed up at the company. This time, she didn't make a scene or start cursing. Her eyes were red, and she looked as haggard as if she'd aged overnight."Raven, can we talk?" Her voice was hoarse and rough around the edges.I brought her into my office. She couldn't sit still, her hands twisting together nervously. "Raven, I know I was wrong before. I didn't do you right."As she spoke, she suddenly tried to kneel in front of me. I hurried to hold her up. "What's this for?""Raven, could you just let Fred go, please?" she pleaded, tears streaming down her face. "He knows he was wrong. He really does. You two were husband and wife, after all. You did at least love each ot

The press conference had an immediate effect. Public opinion flipped overnight. I went from being the "vicious wife" to the pitied "queen of revenge".Fred and Winnie, on the other hand, became public enemies. Everyone wanted a piece of them. Fred's "letter of remorse" also turned into a joke. The comments under it were nothing but mockery and insults."You're hands down the best actor of the year!""You can't perform in bed, and you blame your wife for it? A scumbag's logic is really something.""I feel bad for Ms. Stone. Imagine marrying such a loser."The company's stock price miraculously stopped plummeting and started to rebound. Potential partners who'd wanted to reconsider were now calling one after another, eager to work with us again.Fred panicked. He never imagined I had this much dirt on him, let alone that I would dare expose it all. He called me, his voice on the phone a furious roar."Raven Stone, you're insane! You ruined me!"I listened calmly and then said, "I

In the end, the press conference was scheduled for the next afternoon. The venue was the company's main conference room. Reporters flooded in until the place was packed wall-to-wall. Cameras and microphones were all aimed at the stage.I walked up alone in a crisp white pantsuit. There was no lawyer or PR team with me. It was just me. The flashes exploded all at once, forming a sea of light. The moment I sat down, the reporters immediately started firing off their questions."Ms. Stone, in his confession letter, Mr. Colson claims that you were jealous of Winnie Lane because you couldn't have children and set him up. Is that true?""Ms. Stone, there are rumors online that you secretly transferred all of the company's assets, pushing it to the brink of bankruptcy. Is that accurate?""Ms. Stone, what do you think about being called a vicious wife?"Each question was sharper and nastier than the last. I listened quietly, my expression remaining calm. Only when the room had settled do

The annual dinner ended on a sour note. I had the administrative department handle the aftermath, then went back to the place that I used to call home. When I pushed the door open, the whole place felt icy cold. My wedding photo with Fred was still hanging in the most prominent spot in the living room. In the picture, we were smiling so sweetly. Now, it just looked ironic.I spent the whole night packing up everything that belonged to Fred and throwing it out. His clothes, his shoes, his collection of expensive figurines, and all those so-called tonics Connie kept sending over every few days, supposedly to "nourish my body". All of it went straight into the trash.By the time I was done, the sky was already getting light. I took a shower, changed into fresh clothes, and went to the office. The entire company was on edge. News of Fred being taken away by the police had spread like wildfire to every corner. Many people were worried that the company would go out of business and that t

I said to Connie, "Mom, Winnie isn't Fred's only mistress. He has another one hidden at Goldbridge Residences. Last month, she just gave him a son."Connie's eyes widened in shock. She looked like she'd just seen a ghost. She abruptly grabbed my wrist, her nails almost digging into my flesh."W-What did you say?" Her voice shook.I wrested free and straightened up, looking at her imperiously. "Don't believe me? Her name is Olive Jones. She's 24 years old and fresh out of college. The baby is now a month old. You can go take a look at them at Goldbridge Residences, Block A, Unit 1102."Oh, by the way, the apartment is in her name. Fred paid for it in full. It cost over five million dollars, and he used company money to buy it."With every sentence I spoke, Connie's face turned a shade paler. The thing she cared about the most in this world was her son and future grandson. She'd tried every folk remedy under the sun just to get me pregnant. Now, she finally had the grandson she'd b
