Chapter 3

Autor: Grace
By the next morning, word of my broken engagement had swept through every corner of the Beast Realm.

Public opinion was completely one-sided, and not in my favor.

Nobody believed I was serious. Everyone had written it off as a ploy.

After all, in their eyes, Kael was the pinnacle of what a beastkin male could be, pure-blooded dragon and highest-born young male in the realm.

"Did you hear? The pure-blooded white wolf is trying to break off the engagement! I'm crying. Does she even know what she has?"

"Right? Outside of that bloodline of hers, what does she have over Ivy? Kael being willing to look at her at all is already doing her a favor. And she has the nerve to play hard to get?"

"She probably thinks if she makes enough of a fuss, Kael will distance himself from Ivy for her sake. What an idiot. She's completely out of her depth with him."

I heard every word, clear as day.

And then Kael arrived, Ivy on his arm, riding the wave of everyone's flattery.

He spotted me across the crowd, his arrogance barely contained. "Vivienne, one round of playing hard to get is enough. So you cancelled the engagement — what of it? Where else are you going to go? Stop wasting your time. In the end, you'll come crawling back and beg me to take you. You don't have any other options."

Ivy chimed in right on cue, her voice all soft concern. "Vivienne, stop gambling with your own future. I know you're upset because of me. If you take back what you said about breaking the engagement, I'll disappear — I'll stay out of your way, I promise. Can you really bear to push away someone as perfect as Kael over something like this?"

She was playing peacemaker on the surface. Underneath, she was painting me as petty, unreasonable, and impossible to satisfy, chipping away at what standing I had left in Kael's eyes and in everyone else's.

But this life, they couldn't touch me.

Kael had expected me to crumble, to cry, to beg. Instead I gave him nothing.

That emptiness, the absence of the reaction he'd counted on, shattered his ego like a dropped vase.

He spun around looking for somewhere to direct his fury, and found it: Victor, Louis, and Domi, walking out of the council chamber.

All the spite he couldn't aim at me, he turned on them.

Everything petty and vicious about him came spilling out at once — the small man's instinct to punch down, all bluster and borrowed power with nothing real underneath.

"You three worthless half-bloods! Who said you could use the main entrance?" Kael stormed toward them and kicked the stack of official documents out of Louis's arms with a single brutal sweep. His eyes were vicious. "You're nothing but mistakes my father made while he was drunk. Not even full-blooded. You really think you have the right to breathe the same air as me? Get on your knees and lick every one of those papers off the ground."

All three brothers clenched their fists so hard their knuckles went white. But under the weight of Kael's status and the realm's brutal hierarchy, they had no choice but to bite down and endure.

"That's enough."

My voice came out sharp. I stepped in front of them without hesitation.

I could let go of what Kael said about me. But I refused to stand there and watch him grind these three under his heel.

The memory from my previous life flooded back: the frenzied horde, the moment Kael threw me to them, and these three charging in without hesitation, fighting through it all to reach me, dying there.

I might not have understood my feelings for them yet. But I could not walk away.

"Kael." I met his furious glare without flinching. "You are an embarrassment. You call yourself heir to the throne, but you have no integrity, no leadership — just a talent for throwing your weight at people weaker than you. Is that really the best you've got?"

"You dare talk to me like that?" Kael's eyes went wide. "I have no talent? I took first place at the Autumn Hunt. My border management proposal was praised by my own father. What do you know about any of it?"

"A great deal, actually." I let my voice go cold. "I married him in my previous life. I know exactly what was in his files."

"Your first place at the Autumn Hunt — that was Victor's kill. The Abyss bear he hunted alone. You stole the carcass from him. Your border defense plan — that was Louis's work. Three sleepless nights and those were his maps. And that tax reform you're so proud of? That was Domi's draft. You took it from him and put your name on it."

The silence in the courtyard was total.

All the blood drained from Kael's face. He couldn't work out how I knew. Every one of those secrets, he'd been so certain they were buried.

"You're lying. Prove it!"

Ivy was already crying beautifully, dabbing at her eyes. "Vivienne, please stop spreading lies! I know you're doing this to win Kael back. But you're going to ruin him. If you stop this right now and reconcile with him, I'll leave the royal city — I'll be your servant — just stop hurting him, please."

She performed the perfect martyrdom. Kael's protective instincts kicked in exactly on cue.

"Ivy, don't beg her!" He pulled her close, turning on me with open contempt. "You made all that up just to drive her away. It won't work. And I won't forget this."

I took one slow breath. Then I raised my voice so no one in that courtyard could miss it.

"I'll say this once more. I will never choose Kael as my husband. From this moment forward, nothing about him is any concern of mine."

The words hit him like a slap. His pride couldn't take it. He dragged Ivy away, throwing back one last threat as he went: "You'll regret this."

The crowd thinned. I turned around.

Victor, Louis, and Domi were still standing there, quiet, watching me with complicated expressions.

I walked over to them and said, low but steady: "You are sharper, stronger, and more capable than he will ever be. Why do any of you take orders from someone like that?"

What Kael had done, the murder of his wife and unborn child, sent a shock wave through the entire Beast Realm that stopped everything. The old Beast King, still sick and bed-bound, heard the news and brought up blood. He died of it.The Queen, indestructible for so long and armored in superiority, heard that her son had become a butcher and shattered completely. She spent her last days keening in an empty room and died, finally, in cold and destitute confusion.By the time the royal guard found Kael, he was already nothing. He was locked in the deepest cell in the royal dungeon. Every day he beat his forehead against the stone wall. He drooled. He muttered the same things, over and over."I am the Beast King. My son is the White Wolf King. Vivienne loves me most."Two lives of memory, pressed against each other, contradictory and irreconcilable, had ground his mind into powder. The best healers in the royal city examined him and said the same thing: there was nothing to be done. The on

Kael was gone.Watching me grow happier, watching the entire Beast Realm come to revere me, while he sank deeper into that grinding misery every single day — until the last thread holding him snapped. On a night of thunder and rain, he waited for the three brothers to leave for the front line, and he took me.The shack smelled like mold and old blood. Ivy was on the broken bed, close to delivery, crying out with every contraction."Vivienne, you came to my home." Kael looked at me with those gone-wrong eyes. He was smiling. He didn't seem to see Ivy at all. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry for everything in that other life. Whatever you need — just tell me. I'll do it."On the bed, Ivy, wracked with labor pain and completely forgotten by her own husband, watched Kael groveling and completely snapped."You worthless piece of trash. You think she wants anything to do with you?"What followed was the ugliest version of the two of them, each tearing down whatever was left of the other, saying thin

Kael lost his mind entirely. He started showing up like a haunting, turning up wherever I was, unable to stop himself. One afternoon, I was touring the new trade street in the city when Kael lurched out of an alley. He was wearing squalor: filthy, torn rough cloth, matted hair, and a smell that suggested weeks without washing. His face had gone gaunt, the jaw unshaven, the eyes wrong in a way that had nothing to do with tiredness. He threw himself to the ground in front of my carriage."Vivienne — please just listen to me." He was crying, barely intelligible through the snot and tears. "I know I was wrong. It was Ivy all along — she manipulated me, she seduced me. I never actually loved her. I've always loved you. You — you're the only one I've ever loved."His hands were shaking as he pulled something out from under his coat: a scavenged piece of rock wrapped in dirty rags, a glowing stone of some kind, low-grade, the sort you'd find in a black quarry. He'd hauled cargo for two weeks

As different from Kael's existence as day is from night: the moment I cut him loose entirely, my life became something I hadn't known was possible. In this second life, I was the one leading. And those three new kings of the Beast Realm, cold and ruthless to the rest of the world, were, with me, absolutely hopeless. One late-autumn afternoon, sunlight filtered through the palace garden in broken patches of gold.I laid the three frost-spider silk cloaks I'd sewn by hand across their broad shoulders, one by one.Victor ran his fingers over the stitching, slow and deliberate. Something moved through those usually stone-cold wolf eyes, a warmth that surprised even him. He went down on one knee, and in a flood of silver light, he shifted into a massive snow wolf with a coat like poured mercury. He tucked that enormous wolf head into my lap and pressed his cold, soft nose against my palm, a low rumble of contentment vibrating through him."If you ever get tired, I'll carry you," his voice c

Between the spectacle Kael had made of himself and everything that followed, his reputation was ash. He had no choice but to marry Ivy, and the two of them squeezed into a rotting wooden shack in the commoner district, roof leaking whenever it rained. But without wealth to maintain the lifestyle she'd always demanded, Ivy's carefully constructed persona, the soft-spoken devoted sweetheart, disintegrated in a matter of weeks. What was left underneath was not pretty."You hauled bags at the docks all day and this is all you made?! You can't even afford one tin of cheap face powder! What is the point of you?"Ivy stood in the middle of the shack, visibly pregnant and not a trace of her former grace remaining, screaming at Kael with her finger in his face.Kael's eyes were bloodshot. Exhaustion and humiliation had been rotting him from the inside for weeks. "Shut up. If it weren't for you, I would never have fallen this far! You eat my food, you use my money, and now you're going to sit th

The old Beast King finally woke up.When I came to his chambers, the man lying there had aged ten years in the time he'd been unconscious. That authority he used to carry like a second skin had thinned. He lay against his pillows and listened as his old attendant walked him through everything: our victories in the North, the full account of what Kael had done while his father's eyes were closed.Faced with the unvarnished truth, the King finally let himself see Kael clearly, the cowardice, the smallness, all of it.Even though Kael was the son he had loved best, the son who most resembled him, the Beast King knew: if he kept protecting this man, the whole realm would burn with him.And the people's anger had been building for days. The Elder Council had submitted a joint petition demanding Kael be put to death as a public accounting. The old Beast King closed his eyes. Two long, slow tears tracked down the lines of his face."Vivienne." His voice had gone rough, worn all the way down.
