Chapter 2

作者: Serein M
"Grace?" My voice trembled. My eyes were dead. "What kind of grace are you talking about, Cassius?"

I stood up and looked him dead in the eye. "The kind where I wait on her hand and foot like a maid? Or the kind where she locks me in a freezing wine cellar until I catch a raging fever?"

Camilla's face paled for a second, but she quickly put her innocent mask back on.

"Scarlett, you're talking nonsense again—"

"Nonsense?" I cut her off, my voice thick with desperate anger. "You said you were teaching me about vintage wines. You locked me in that cellar for four straight hours. By the time they found me, I was half-dead from the cold."

A tear slipped out. Not for him, but for my wasted youth. For my dead baby.

I had wasted five years of my life on a monster.

Cassius rubbed his temples, annoyed, like he was dealing with a tedious business dispute. "You're too sensitive, Scarlett. The door closed on its own. Camilla already apologized. Didn't I comfort you after that?"

Comfort?

He meant his dismissive, "Be careful next time"?

Camilla let out a fake sigh. "Cassius, since Scarlett is struggling so much, maybe she shouldn't attend the syndicate galas anymore. Just so she doesn't..."

She paused, her eyes flashing with vicious triumph.

"...embarrass you."

Right then, something inside me snapped for good.

Five years. I was done with their sick, twisted games.

"You're right," I said, my voice eerily calm. "From now on, I won't attend any Famiglia events."

I turned toward the bedroom to grab the suitcase I had already packed.

But I didn't even make it to the door. Cassius lunged at me like a feral beast.

His hand clamped down on my jaw, gripping so hard I thought he would crush my bones.

His arrogant mask slipped, replaced by the sheer, unhinged fury of a man losing control.

"Take one step out that door," he snarled, his voice low and lethal. "And I will never come back for you. Are we clear?"

In that moment, I realized just how wrong I had been.

I was stupid enough to cling to our memories.

When I was sick, he never left my side. Hands that ended lives had held me so gently.

On my birthday, he would drop the Don act, watching fireworks with me and blowing out candles like a normal husband.

And the countless nights he pinned me to the mattress, taking me over and over again.

"My girl. Be with me forever," he used to promise.

Maybe we did love each other once.

But our love didn't stand a chance against the daily venom of another woman, or his deep-rooted, arrogant obsession with power.

"Cassius," I said calmly. "I want a divorce."

The air froze.

Cassius's grip loosened. He took a step back, sheer disbelief flashing in his eyes.

"What did you say?"

"A divorce," I repeated, my tone deadpan. "I'm divorcing you."

His face darkened like a gathering storm.

"You're threatening me with divorce because you don't want to learn high society rules?" His voice carried a suffocating weight. "Scarlett, I overestimated you. I thought you had a spine."

A threat?

I almost laughed. Cassius Gallo sat so high on his throne, he actually thought his love was an act of charity.

"I'm not throwing a fit," I said, my heart completely dead. "Go find a woman who's worthy of the Famiglia. Like Camilla."

I pulled out of his grasp and walked into the bedroom.

"Scarlett!" his roar echoed through the penthouse. "If you walk out that door today, you're going to regret it!"

I dragged my suitcase through the living room without giving him a second glance.

I had endured five years of a hidden marriage and endless bullying.

When I lay in a hospital bed, begging for just one grand to save our baby, he coldly refused. All because he listened to her poison and thought I was just slacking off.

Yesterday, in that freezing operating room, I lost our first child.

And he didn't even know that tiny life existed.

"Stop right there!" Cassius bellowed behind me. "You have nothing! Without me, you are nothing!"

My hand gripped the doorknob. I paused for a second.

The moment my baby died, my love for him—and the family I thought we were building—died with it.

Sterling let out a calm, quiet chuckle. The laugh was laced with cold mockery. He glanced at the ring box in Cassius's hand, his voice flat."Mr. Gallo, if I recall correctly, you were at the Sotheby's fall auction in New York last month. You dropped out of the bidding for this aurora sapphire so you could buy that Beverly Hills mansion for Camilla."Sterling lightly brushed the glowing necklace at my throat."I'm curious, Mr. Gallo. Did you just not care about your wife, or did you think she wasn't worth a few million?"Cassius stared dead at the necklace, his face turning ghostly pale.Back at the auction, his selfish instincts told him it was a waste to drop millions on a sapphire for me.He thought flashing a shiny Donna heirloom ring would be enough to buy my forgiveness. Now, the joke was on him. The sapphire he passed up was sparkling right on my neck.Cassius started to shake, tears spilling from his eyes.He choked out his final, pathetic excuse."I just wanted to protect her

The next evening.I stood in front of a huge floor-to-ceiling mirror. The custom black silk gown clung perfectly to my curves. The aurora sapphire necklace glowed around my neck.It felt like that light really tore through the darkness of my last five years.I grabbed my keys and drove to the Hamptons Estate alone.I wanted to get there early. I wanted to surprise Sterling. My heart raced with a long-lost thrill. But just as my car pulled into the private driveway, a shadow dashed out from the side.He spread his arms, blocking the car dead in its tracks.I slammed on the brakes. Tires screeched on the cobblestones. The second I recognized that face, my stomach churned. Every alarm bell in my body went off.It was Cassius. The once invincible New York mafia don looked absolutely unhinged. He was a lot thinner. His tailored suit was covered in mud and wrinkles. He had dark stubble all over his jaw. His eyes were terrifyingly bloodshot. The moment I popped the door, he lunged at me like

Scarlett's POVIn less than fifteen minutes, a hot Wagyu cheese sandwich was right in front of me.The rich aroma instantly woke up my dead stomach.I picked up my fork, ready to cut a third piece, when a large, warm hand gently covered mine.Sterling smoothly slid the silver fork away."That's enough for now, Scarlett." His deep eyes locked onto mine, his tone gentle but firm. "Eat slowly. Your stomach isn't used to this much rich food."I paused. I did actually feel a little full.I couldn't help but smile, looking up at him. "Can you read minds or something? How do you know exactly when I'm full?"Sterling didn't smile. He leaned against the old wooden porch rail, looking dead serious."It's not mind-reading." His dark eyes pinned to my face. "It's because your heart is beautiful and genuine. You wear all your feelings right on your sleeve. Anyone paying an ounce of attention wouldn't miss it."My smile froze. My heart skipped a beat.Cassius spent five years brainwashing me with vi

Scarlett's POVThat afternoon, I finally made time for my post-op checkup at the rundown community clinic.Sitting in the waiting room, looking at the faded health posters, I mindlessly flipped through an old magazine."Next, Miss Scarlett." The nurse called my name.Just as I stood up, the clinic's sliding doors opened.A tall man strode in.He wore a perfectly tailored dark suit, radiating a calm, powerful aura. His deep gray-blue eyes were intently searching for something. When his gaze landed on me, a flash of relief crossed his eyes."You're Mr. Sterling?" I stood up, surprised. He nodded, his voice deep and gentle. "Sorry for showing up unannounced. But I couldn't let you do this checkup alone."Without another word, he took over.I watched him pull out his phone. In an undeniable tone, he said, "Reschedule the three-hundred-million-dollar merger. And get the best specialists down to the Hamptons clinic. Now.""Mr. Sterling, you don't have to—""It's not a hassle." He cut me off,

Scarlett's POVThe train pulled into the station. The sky was pitch black.I dragged my suitcase, trudging along the Hamptons shore. Finally, I pushed open the door to my grandmother's old wooden cabin. The rusty hinges shrieked, as if mocking my miserable state. The moment the door opened, the cold wall I had built around my heart completely collapsed. The suitcase slipped from my hand and crashed onto the floor. My legs gave out. I collapsed onto the dusty floorboards.Endless darkness swallowed me whole."I'm sorry..." I clutched my flat stomach, my voice broken.I sobbed uncontrollably in the empty house."Baby, I'm so sorry. I failed you." I apologized desperately to the thin air.All I could see was that cold operating table.I hated Cassius for his cruelty.I hated Camilla for her venom. But most of all, I hated myself.I hated that I loved that monster for five whole years.I hated that I couldn't even shield you from the storm. The weight of losing you tore my heart to shreds.

Cassius's POVFor the next three days, I used every mob connection in New York to turn the city upside down.Every hotel, every airport, every street. My men scoured the grid for any trace of her."Boss, nothing in Brooklyn.""Checked every hotel in Manhattan. No check-ins for Miss Scarlett.""No sign of her leaving through airports or train stations either."Bad news kept rolling in. My sanity was crumbling. In just three days, the brutal stress made me look ten years older. My arrogant pride was hollowed out. My eyes were sunken, my jaw covered in stubble.I barely slept.Whenever I closed my eyes, I saw her walking away. And the child I would never meet.On the third night, I sat slumped in my office like a zombie, staring at my blank phone screen.Just then, my secretary knocked and walked in."Mr. Gallo, a lawyer is here to see you. Says it's about Miss Scarlett."I sprang out of my chair. "Send him in!"But the man who walked in wasn't the second chance I was praying for.A young
