Chapter 3

Author: Amara Verse
I might not have a lot of fans, but I am a certified bad-luck magnet.

The last person who tried forcing me into something ended up in prison.

Not wanting to tank this old lady's future luck, I desperately searched for an excuse not to eat.

"Aveline's pregnant. Meat makes her sick."

The old lady and I both blurted out, "What?!"

General Ironhart calmly took my hand and stood up. "I'll make her something lighter."

He gave his mother a small nod and led me away from the table.

"Wait, how am I pregnant? You literally just got back. Doesn't that make me look like I cheated?"

I kept talking the whole way, trying to talk some sense into him, but he completely ignored me.

He marched me straight into the bedroom.

Tall candles flickered in the dim light. Faded wedding ribbons and garlands hung above the bed. The whole room looked like an old bridal suite that had been sitting untouched for years.

[Ahhh! Is General Ironhart about to pull out his ultimate move?!]

[The last woman he brought in here got turned into a candle!]

[He's acting different with Naomi. Hold on, let them cook.]

Blushing, I followed him over to the bed. I didn't expect him to have been thinking about this the whole time.

"So you're really going with the do-it-first-explain-later plan—hey, watch out!"

A small figure suddenly shot out of the shadows.

When I looked closer, it was a chubby little girl.

Her doll-like face looked waterlogged, her swollen features all squished together. Water dripped from her entire body, and a tattered little whip swung from her hand.

"Papa! Are you gonna have a little brother with her behind my back?!"

No time to question the art style. I sucked in a sharp breath, my jaw dropping.

This was a lot to unpack.

[Holy shit, Drenndatter's here. I bet she doesn't make it through the night!]

[I give her three minutes!]

[All the big bosses are here. She's finally useful—taking the hit for someone else.]

The little girl's appearance instantly sent the livestream chat into chaos.

Meanwhile, my own conclusion scared me even more. I slowly raised a shaking finger at them.

"Y-You... You two..."

[Haha, she finally realized this is a horror game!]

[I wanna see her completely lose it!]

"Incest is disgusting! She's just a kid!"

I couldn't believe this monster would go after his own daughter!

Furious, I stepped over and pulled the little girl into my arms.

"Sweetie, don't be scared. I'm here. Nobody's gonna bully you."

As I spoke, I gently patted her soft little back. "Why are your clothes wet?

"You're her dad! Is this how you take care of your daughter?!"

The more I thought about it, the madder I got. I turned and yelled at the frozen General Ironhart.

"Go find her some clean clothes!"

His face went blank.

"I-I'm not—"

Strangely, the second I finished talking, the girl in my arms dried off completely.

She squirmed out of my arms. Her big watery eyes blinked at me for a long moment before she suddenly burst into tears.

"Mama! You're Mama! Mia missed you so much!"

She threw herself back into my arms, her fluffy little head rubbing against my chest.

I was still trying to untangle everything when the system voice rang in my ear:

[Congratulations. Drenndatter's favorability has increased to 60%.]

[Starting players: 10; Remaining: 6.]

Drenndatter?

Wasn't her name Mia?

A terrifying thought hit me.

In old stories, desperate families would drown unwanted firstborn daughters, hoping the next child would be a son. Those girls became Drenndatters—water-bound child spirits that haunted the families who abandoned them.

I thought back to Mia showing up soaked from head to toe.

Was that how she died?

Looks like my mission here wasn't just winning over General Ironhart.

I had to save Mia too.

[Drenndatter called a bad-luck magnet "Mama"? What the hell just happened?!]

[No way. Everyone who ran into Drenndatter before ended up drowned.]

[Naomi's actually got skills. She already broke the survival record at Ironhart Manor.]

***

Because General Ironhart had claimed I was pregnant, I had no choice but to share a bed with him that night.

Just thinking about it had me excited.

This romance game really wasn't playing around.

I trimmed the candlewick to brighten the room, then dug through the drawers for medicine. I waved at General Ironhart, standing by the window.

"Come here. Let me patch you up."

Half his face was hidden in shadow. In the candlelight, his injuries looked even worse.

"You're... not scared of me?"

I blinked.

"You fought for your country. You got hurt protecting people. I feel bad for you. Why would I be scared?"

The candle crackled softly, wax slipping down the side like tears.

He stayed quiet for a long time.

Then he suddenly climbed out the window.

At the same time, the system notification rang in my ear:

[Congratulations. General Ironhart's favorability has increased to 40%.]

I couldn't see the livestream chat, but the second I stepped into The Gilded Lyre, I spotted a gorgeous guy.He was dressed head to toe in red, stretched across a couch in a dark corner. A wine jug rested in his hand as he took slow, lazy sips, humming softly while one arm moved along with the rhythm. The room was dim, but he looked like fire in human form.
