Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Set Sail
Jessie quickly picked up my call and asked, "Zephyr? Why are you calling me out of nowhere?"

I asked, "Mom, why is there a daughter listed under my registry?"

The other end of the line went quiet for a moment before Jessie's laughter came through. "What daughter? Are you exhausted from work and reading things wrong?"

I laughed as well as I said, "Turns out I also have an ex-wife called Lindsay Davies."

This time, her breathing became heavy. "You... where did you hear that name?"

"The police station," I said.

Then, the call ended as soon as I finished speaking. When I called again, her phone was already switched off.

I stared at the screen. Over the past few years, she would always urge me to go back to my hometown and even asked for copies of my ID, pitifully claiming she needed them for health insurance verification. Everything that I had not been paying attention to now had an answer.

I did not text her to question her. Instead, I opened the Trip app and changed my ticket to the earliest flight.

The next morning I was standing in the airport departure hall with my luggage.

My name was Zephyr Evans. I was thirty, unmarried and childless. Yet the household registration system had created an entire life for me. I had gotten married, had a daughter, and then divorced. My daughter was even five years old.

I suddenly laughed out loud.

My mother was quite something.

While I was working overtime, she had stolen my life and sold it to the rich.

If that were the case, I would go back. I would go back to see who had written such an absurd script.

-

The neighborhood in my hometown still looked the same.

As soon as I opened the door, the living room was quite lively. Seafood, wine, and cake were laid on the table.

Jessie sat at the head of the table, her face red from drinking. Meanwhile, my younger cousin, Lex Taylor, was wearing a silk shirt, and the watch on his wrist appeared to blink brightly under the lights.

Several relatives sat around him, praising him.

"Lex has really made something of himself. He bought that luxury apartment without blinking."

"Your luck is so good. Marrying well matters more than anything."

Lex covered his mouth and laughed. "Not at all. I worked hard for it."

I stood at the door, and the wheels of my suitcase hit the doorway with a dull thud, making everyone look over. The wineglass in Jessie's hand fell before hitting the floor and shattering.

Lex's smile froze for a moment before saying, "Zephyr? Why did you come back without telling us?"

I ignored him as I walked to the dining table and slapped the police report onto it. "Explain this."

The room went silent at once.

My second uncle extended his neck for a look, and he quickly pulled back as his expression darkened.

Jessie reacted quickly as she stood up and said, "Zephyr, why are you doing this?! You came back in the middle of the night just to show everyone your attitude?"

I stared at her and said, "I'm asking you about my supposed marriage and daughter on my household registry."

Her voice rose. "Family matters should be discussed behind closed doors. Do you have to make a scene in front of everyone?"

"A scene?" I scoffed as I took out a printed copy of the scanned marriage registration and threw it in front of Lex. "You used my ID to get married, used my degree for matchmaking, and used my name to register a child."

Lex put down his glass and slowly stood up. "Zephyr, you don't have to act like the victim."

He went on, "Back then, the Davies family's matchmaking required at least a bachelor's degree and a clean family background. Your education was sitting there unused. So what if I borrowed it?"

No one in the living room spoke, which meant they had all known.

Jessie immediately picked up where he left off and said, "Your cousin did not have the same advantages you had growing up. You're his older cousin. What's wrong with helping him?"

"Helping?" I asked as I looked at the woman I had called my mother for thirty years. "You stole my identity, forged a marriage registration, and put someone else's child under my name. You call that helping?"

Jessie slammed the table. "Aren't you doing alright now? Did you get maimed somehow? You have a good education and a good job. But life is different for Lex, and he has had a particularly hard life! So what if I helped him?"

I had heard that line for over twenty years.

In the past, I thought she was simply favoring Lex more. But now I knew. Playing favorite was only a cover.

Lex raised an eyebrow. "Besides, I'm already divorced. I didn't hold you back. You can just remove the record now, right?"

"What about the child?" I asked.

He froze before mumbling, "What child?"

"Sandy," I said.

His expression finally changed. But soon, that indifferent look returned. "What does she have to do with me? The household registry already stated it, right? She's your daughter."

That sentence chilled my heart.

A five-year-old child meant no more to him than old clothes he wanted to throw away.

There were also transfer records between Kenneth and Howard, and a report on falsified clinical data for the special medication used to treat Fabry disease. To get the drug he distributed exclusively approved and launched quickly, Kenneth had bribed the evaluation agency and altered the adverse reaction and side effect rates.Sandy had unfortunately become a real case of those adverse reactions.Lindsay closed her eyes. When she opened them again, they were full of murderous fury. She dialed a number and said only one sentence. "Dad, call a family meeting. Now."-The Davies family estate was brightly lit.All of the Davies family's core members were seated at the conference table made from redwood. Kenneth sat to the left of the main seat, looking cultured and mild.Once the meeting began, Kenneth asked, "Lindsay, it's getting late. What is so important that everyone needs to be here at this time?"Lindsay did not speak. The lawyer behind her placed a tablet in the center of t

With every sentence I finished, Jessica's body would tremble.I continued. "You're right. If my father knew from beyond the grave, he really would not forgive me. He wouldn't forgive me for being fooled by a woman like you for thirty years."After that, I turned to hospital security and said, "Send her to the police station. Tell the police there is a fraud accomplice here wanting to turn herself in."The crowd opened a path for them.I walked back into the room, with Jessie breaking down and cursing behind me.Lindsay stood by the window, looking at me with an unreadable expression."You handled that cleanly," she said."I just don't want her to have another chance to appear in front of Sandy," I said as I sat down on the couch, suddenly feeling exhausted. Ending a thirty-year bond took more out of me than signing a contract worth millions.Just then, Lindsay's phone rang. It was Williams, and she put it on speaker. "Ms. Davies, Mr. Evans. There's a new development." The law

I shuddered as I listened to Lindsay's words to her lawyer, Williams."We can argue that taking money that's meant to fund Sandy's medical bills with the full knowledge that she might die without it is attempted murder." She hung up and looked at me. "I want him to spend the rest of his life in prison."Suddenly, the door to the room was pushed open. "Zephyr! You animal! Where did you take Lex?"Jessie rushed in, her hair disheveled and eyes bloodshot. Hospital security followed behind her but could not stop her. "Ma'am, this is the VIP ward! You can't force your way in..."Jessie shoved the guard away and rushed straight at me, raising her hand to slap me. I turned aside to avoid it and grabbed her hand. "Let go of me! You ingrate! You want to kill your own cousin for an outsider and an illegitimate child?!"At the bedroom's doorway, Sandy trembled from the shouting as her face turned pale.I tightened my grip on Jessie's hand. "Firstly, this is a hospital. Keep your voice down.

I did not look back.If my dad knew about all of this from the afterlife, he would hate himself for not realizing sooner what predators he had sacrificed his life protecting. The room finally fell quiet. The doctor took the payment receipt and nodded. "I'll arrange the medication right away."Meanwhile, Lindsay's lawyer and personal staff left the room, leaving the space to us. Only Lindsay, me, and the helpless little girl at the bedroom door remained in the living room. I did not know how to face my supposed daughter. Lindsay also did not know how to define this 'ex-husband' who had suddenly appeared.Just then, Sandy stepped out from behind the door. She walked up to me, raised her face, and handed me something. It was a strawberry candy in a wrapper. "For you. Candy makes bitter things go away."I froze.I lowered my head and looked into her clear eyes. The uneasy chill from hearing her call me "Daddy" at the police station softened into something warm. I crouched down and

Lindsay was silent for a moment before saying, "My father appreciated your so-called clean family background and high education. He thought you had good genes and were suitable to marry into the family."She continued, "At the time, I was overseas handling an acquisition and didn't have time to come back. I didn't attend the wedding, and the registration was handled by my father and his assistant. I only saw you once through video back then and didn't pay much attention."I understood then. In their world, marriage was probably similar to restructuring. Who the groom was and what he looked like might matter less than a beautiful resume.Meanwhile, Lex had used my resume to his advantage."After Sandy was born, I discovered he was addicted to gambling and ignored our daughter, so I divorced him. I thought spending five million dollars could buy out a marriage that was clearly a mistake and give Sandy some security. I did not expect Lex to be someone who could never be satisfied."T

Lindsay's lawyer took the phone and quickly flipped through it.Lindsay looked at me and asked, "What do you think about Sandy?"I was silent for two seconds. I remembered the little girl at the police station who had timidly called me 'Daddy'. I raised my head and met Lindsay's eyes. "Her household registry lists me as her father. Until our legal relationship is annulled, I'm her only guardian. So, I'll take responsibility."For the first time, Lindsay looked at me differently. "Take responsibility? Do you know what that means? Fabry disease costs more than a million dollars a year to treat.""I know," I answered quickly. "Lex has to return every cent. Her treatment can't be delayed for even a day."Lindsay said nothing as she only watched me quietly. After a long while, she gave a slight nod. "My legal team will assist you with all legal issues, including voiding the marriage registration, recovering the money, and filing the lawsuits themselves."She was decisive and came up
